Blizzcon 2023 is around the corner. For those who are wandering when it will happen, it will be present on November 3 and it ends one day later. Obviously, the chances of seeing a brand new Warcraft real-time strategy title being announced is very slim and it might not happen at this Blizzcon, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen. Recently, there have been various comments on Warcraft IV like how former Blizzard employee David Fried has stated the chance of Warcraft IV will most likely happen than ever.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has also stated interests of being able to see Blizzard revive some of the older titles including their real-time strategy games. Of course, the return of Chris Metzen who is now an executive creative director for the Warcraft universe is also another glimpse of hope of seeing Warcraft IV can happen. So there are people within the industry that want to see a reimagined Warcraft title again. I will share five reasons of why Warcraft IV should be a thing and maybe there will be an announcement trailer that’s going to happen sooner or later.
A Proper Follow-Up to Warcraft III
Whether you want to agree or disagree, World of Warcraft is not really a true sequel to Warcraft III. It has nothing to do with its core game mechanics and while it does continue the events of Warcraft III, it is simply its own game by nature. Throughout the years, there have been many World of Warcraft expansion add-ons because the base game was a massive success, but there haven’t been a real-time strategy Warcraft title since 2003. It’s about time the series return to its roots and also build upon the hero-driven real time strategy styled gameplay that Warcraft III has perfected. On top of that, it’ll also be nice to see a Warcraft real-time strategy game with updated visuals and better quality of life like being able to control more than 12 units at once.
An Epic Story Campaign
Warcraft III’s campaign has always been a fantastic one from the genre itself. Not only the mission feel varied and have their own purpose of being there, but it’s also the engaging story that has also emphasized players to play them and see where their journey goes. It’ll be nice to see if Warcraft IV continues this sort of design again because it’ll make the game more enjoyable for those aren’t avid skirmish or competitive players of the genre. it’s certainly fun to comp stomp or go up against skilled players in online matches, but sometimes you just want to play a campaign that has excellent world building and great missions to change up the pace.
Reviving the Real-Time Strategy Genre
Warcraft is a big name. For those who been around the block, knows it originated as a real-time strategy game. It will certainly help players be interested in the real-time strategy genre again especially after World of Warcraft’s massive success. There’s no doubt that this genre has lost its popularity throughout the years, and the genre is mostly flooded by small indepedent developers making strategy games for the sake of passion. But if Warcraft IV happens, there is a good chance we will see more high budget real-time strategy games coming into the play and boy would that be an awesome sight to see.
A Playable Naga Faction
I still remembered the days when I first played The Frozen Throne’s Night Elf campaign and the final mission was so memorable. The main reason why it was so memorable was because you got to play as the Naga. That was something I definitely didn’t see coming, and it was so cool at first glance. It left an impression on me and it always made me wonder if Blizzard would patch Warcraft III to have a proper Naga faction for the skirmish gameplay in the future.
Fast forward to today’s times, I can definitely say that Warcraft III never had an official Naga faction, but this is something that Warcraft IV could capitalize on. it would also be a good way to market the game too because I am sure most players would like to see how the Naga would be fleshed out if it was designed more for skirmish match ups rather than just campaign. Also, the Naga units have always been very elaborate in their design, and it would be awesome to be able to see more of them in action while playing skirmish or multiplayer.
Warcraft Needs More Strategy Titles
This one is self explanatory. The Warcraft series started in 1994, so it is definitely an old video game series and it only has three real-time strategy titles. When you play these games so many times, you basically know every unit and their functionality within the games. What that means is the games start to get stagnant and it’ll be nice to see which familiar units that Warcraft IV will return. And of course, new units and mechanics for them. Personally, I would love to see if the Warcraft II’s Paladin will ever return again or maybe if the Orc faction will be able to produce Dragons again. Time will tell for sure, but having a brand new Warcraft will mean there will be excitement of the many types of units the game can allow players to produce.
Those are my five reasons of why Warcraft IV should exist. Do you believe Warcraft should go back its strategy roots or should it just stay producing more content for its massively multiplayer online fanatics? Personally, I want a new Warcraft strategy game and it would also be one of my most anticipated titles for sure if that happens. But for now, I guess we have to continue playing the waiting game to know if Warcraft IV will be a thing for Blizzard.
