Nightmare Dungeons used to be an important aspect in Diablo IV. During the early days, it was literally the main activity for Diablo IV’s endgame loop. You would run Nightmare Dungeons until you hit a high level you were comfortable with. It was an important role for getting experience, and finding loot. It also used to be the method that players farmed for improving their precious Paragon Glyphs.
Ever since Diablo IV had upgraded to the Vessel of Hatred expansion, Nightmare Dungeons are not the same anymore. Instead of being the content that players would focus on experience and pushing for high levels, it’s more designed for farming crafting materials especially for Obducite. With Diablo IV having more endgame activities to do, how well do Nightmare Dungeons hold up?

Nightmare Dungeons Woes
Well, I’ve been running Nightmare Dungeons and other activities to compare the efficiency on certain things like experience or farming for materials. As someone who did enjoy the Nightmare Dungeon grind during the early days of Diablo IV, I’m not too content with how Nightmare Dungeons are currently balanced.
There’s just not enough incentive to run Nightmare Dungeons anymore. They’re primary purpose is to farm for your currency for upgrading your equipment. However, there are just better alternatives like running Kurast Undercity or Infernal Hordes. The Undercity can give you significantly way more Obducite.
They’re also easier to navigate because of the map layout, and you don’t have to worry about getting bad dungeons. Infernal Hordes can also give you a respectable amount of Obducite. They’re also good for leveling your character, and can give you Ancestral Legendary items or the Scroll of Restorations.
They’re Still Fun – Just Not Essential
Despite enjoying Nightmare Dungeons, I have appreciated the many quality of life decisions Blizzard has made throughout the many patches. There used to be so many modifiers that can easily hinder your leveling journey like having Death Pulse in your sigils. This was a mechanic where if you killed an enemy, the enemy would explode right afterwards.
It also did an insane amount of damage too. The fact they decided to simplify the modifiers has made Nightmare Dungeons a lot more enjoyable in the long run. You no longer have to carefully check for certain bad attributes, and then salvage it and reroll another sigil for good luck.
They are simply a lot more fun to play through nowadays. The new expansion has also included additional dungeons too. Unfortunately, they’re just not meaningful enough to run them multiple times. They are no longer used for pushing experience because The Pit is significantly better in that aspect.
Beyond Obducite Rewards
Season seven hasn’t done any balance changes for Nightmare Dungeons. I found this to be disappointing because there were many gameplay changes that were done for the current season. I would like to see Nightmare Dungeons have some more value rather than an area that’s just there just for variety purposes.
Nightmare Dungeons are never going to be the best at farming anything particularly like The Pit for high leveling pushing or Infernal Hordes for accumulating Ancestral Legendary items or crafting materials. It should have something that makes it worth farming because it used to be an important part of Diablo IV’s endgame. All the positive changes that Blizzard has done for Nightmare Dungeons feel irrelevant.
I personally believe they should return the ability to upgrade your Paragon Glyphs like the old days. It makes sense that running The Pit rewards the player to be able to upgrade their items. The Pit is basically a big activity that’s testing how powerful your build is, and the Paragon Glyphs are essential to making your characters strong.
But there just needs to be some other incentive to encourage players to run Nightmare Dungeons. I think Nightmare Dungeons should be an activity that players can improve their crafting materials and being able to upgrade their character’s power. As of right now, they are simply not worth running.
