Yooka-Laylee digs up a special guest – Shovel Knight!

The highly anticipated, 3D indie platformer Yooka-Laylee is getting a notable guest appearing on its colourful shores. The azure blue garden tool wielder, Shovel Knight, will be appearing as an NPC in Playtonic Games' record-breaking title - the Kickstarter project that hit its target, in spades.

Following their presence at UK Gaming Conference EGX 2016, Playtonic Games have released a trailer showing future players a selection of the whimsical and far-fetched characters the bat and chameleon duo can expect to come across in their game, currently set to be released Q1 2017. Among the many, many creatures are an adder in a pair of shorts (make the trouser snake jokes at your own cost), a duck in a gumball machine (presumably trapped for our own safety), as well as a virtual dinosaur who could be an extra in Wreck it Ralph 2. One character that is, simply put, ‘a cannon with eyes’, could easily have been a new Pokemon.

But most poignant of the showcased characters is Shovel Knight, the protagonist of the critically acclaimed game of the same name. In the trailer, Laylee can be seen interacting with him, noting they finally have, “a decent NPC” character. Although several fans may not have got to go troweling with Shovel Knight in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS, maybe they’ll be able to find enjoyment with the sapphire scooper in his glorious 3D rendition here.

Shovel Knight is no stranger to indie games that aren’t his own, having already had guest appearances in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 and Runbow. The latter of which is a game so stuffed with racing indie game characters, you’d think they’ve finally gone full circle and turned the Google Play Store into an infinite runner.
