The studio partially comprised of former members of Rare have unveiled a sequel to their 2017 spiritual successor to Banjo & Kazooie. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will see the return of the two integral characters in a new style of gameplay.
As the most direct change from the prior title, The Impossible Lair will feature prominently 2D-style side-scroller gameplay. The trailer also promises a 3D overworld for players to explore that will feature puzzles and challenges. This overworld seems to have a top-down perspective similar to that of Super Mario 3D World.

Additional information wasn’t shown in the trailer, but a FAQ sheet was provided by Playtonic on their official website. They state that the game will release simultaneously on all major platforms, including Xbox One, PS4, PC, and the Switch. As for a release date, the company teased that it would come “sooner than you’d expect,” while noting it would be later this year.
The original Yooka-Laylee was released to above-average reviews, though far below the expectations set by its spiritual predecessor. With The Impossible Lair, the team seems to desire alluding to another Rare classic, especially with David Wise’s contribution to the upcoming game’s soundtrack.
