It’s been three months since the announcement for Mario Golf: Super Rush was first dropped, but now we have more details on this summer game. In a trailer released today, Nintendo explained more about the different modes and uncovered new details for this Mario spin-off.
At first glance, you’d figure this is just Wii Sports golf but with Super Mario characters, but it’s much deeper than that. When playing golf against three other players, you must study the wind and terrain to properly hit your shot. You can either hit it straight on, hit a curve shot, or do a spin shot. While curve shots are used to avoid obstacles, spin shots change how the ball moves once it lands.
If the course looks too daunting, using the new scan feature will let you take a look at the overall terrain before starting. Also, you can decide which type of controls you want. You can go for the simple button layout or use the Joy-Con’s motion controls. It’ll feel much more natural as if you’re hitting a real golf ball.
Each of the 16 characters you get to choose from has five different stats: power, stamina, speed, control and spin. Each golfer has their own strengths and weaknesses, alongside a special shot. This special shot is specific to each golfer, which is a special move they can perform.
Mario Golf: Super Rush is more than just couch co-op. If you have a Nintendo Online subscription, you can play with up to three other golfers online. You and your opponents can play in multiple different environments, ranging from realistic to Mario-inspired courses.
In the new game mode called Speed Golf, players won’t take turns but instead golf at the same time. Race to finish first by using your character’s special dash and signature moves. This special ability is like an ultimate move that each golfer can perform to make their way to the top.
Another type of Speed Golf revealed in the trailer is Battle Golf, which is the same but in a battle arena and with special rules. If you wanted a story mode, you could play Golf Adventure, a mode that lets you explore the town, talk to mushroom kingdom folk and complete missions.
You may even come across some nasty foes, which you must face off within a boss battle. After completing missions with your Mii character, you’ll start levelling up. You’ll even be able to use your levelled up Mii in normal mode with the other Mario characters.
Pre-order Mario Golf: Super Rush before it releases on June 25th, 2021.
