1. How to Respec in Baldur’s Gate 3

Respeccing lets you reset your character’s stats, abilities, and even class in Baldur’s Gate 3. This means you can rebuild your character without starting a new game.

Where to Find Withers

To respec, you’ll need to locate Withers, a skeletal NPC who appears after progressing the main story. He usually spawns after you reach the Goblin Camp. Look for him near the edges of your Camp. He offers several services for a fee and is harmless unless attacked.

Steps to Respec Your Character

  1. Go to your Camp.
  2. Find Withers.
  3. Speak to him and select Change Class.
  4. Pay 100 gold.
  5. Enter the Character Creator screen.
  6. If keeping your class, choose it again and adjust your stats or spells.
  7. Confirm your choices and exit the menu.

Note that respeccing resets you to level 1, but your earned experience remains. You’ll need to manually level back up. This process also resets known spells, subclass choices, and proficiencies, which can affect gear you can equip.

2. How to Change Class in Baldur’s Gate 3

Changing your class in Baldur’s Gate 3 allows you to try new builds without restarting the game. You keep your story progress, companions, and items.

Steps to Change Class

  1. Visit Withers in your Camp.
  2. Select Change Class.
  3. Pay 100 gold.
  4. Pick a new class in the Character Creator.
  5. Assign your levels and abilities for the new class.
  6. Confirm and exit the menu.

For example, if a level 4 Warlock becomes a Sorcerer, you keep your XP and can assign your four levels to the new class. However, you’ll lose previous class features, spells, and proficiencies, potentially affecting your gear. Always double-check what changes before confirming.

3. How to Change Subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3

Changing your subclass lets you keep your main class while gaining new features. It’s useful if you want a different playstyle without switching classes entirely.

Steps to Change Subclass

  1. Visit Withers.
  2. Choose Change Class.
  3. Pay 100 gold.
  4. Select your same class in the Character Creator.
  5. Progress to the level where your subclass is chosen.
  6. Pick a different subclass from before.

Subclass unlocks vary by class:

  • Clerics: Choose Domain at level 1.
  • Barbarians: Choose Path at level 3.

For example, a Warlock will always have few spell slots, whether they pick Archfey or Great Old One, but changing subclasses can grant new abilities and perks.

4. How to Change Companion Classes and Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can also change your companions’ classes and subclasses, which helps tailor your party’s balance and roles.

Steps to Change Companion Classes

  1. Switch control to the companion you want to adjust.
  2. Visit Withers in camp.
  3. Select Change Class.
  4. Pay 100 gold.
  5. Pick a new class or subclass for that companion.
  6. Confirm and exit the menu.

This lets you avoid duplicate classes in your party. For example:

  • Make Astarion a Ranger instead of another Rogue.
  • Change Karlach from Barbarian to Paladin.

Some companions have preselected subclasses, such as Shadowheart starting as a Trickery Domain Cleric. However, you can switch her to the War Domain or another domain if it better suits your party’s needs. Changing a subclass does not alter story dialogue or quests.

5. How to Multiclass in Baldur’s Gate 3

Multiclassing allows you to combine abilities from multiple classes, creating powerful hybrid builds. However, it comes with trade-offs in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Steps to Multiclass

  1. Level up your character until you have a level to spend.
  2. Open the level-up screen.
  3. Look for the Add Class button in the top right corner.
  4. Select the additional class you want.
  5. Assign your new level into that class.
  6. Repeat this process as you level up further.

Multiclassing can produce strong combinations, such as:

  • Sorcerer plus Wizard for more spells and Metamagic.
  • Cleric plus Paladin for healing and heavy damage.

However, keep in mind that multiclassing prevents you from reaching the highest abilities in any single class. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a level cap of 12, so every multiclass level reduces how many levels you can dedicate to a single class’s most powerful skills.
