Released on August 31st, 2023, Fionna and Cake take the stages of Max and Amazon Prime. Today, we get to get into exploring the character, Cake the Cat in Episode 3. Just like the previous 2 episodes, Fionna Campbell and Simon Petricov, this is a character growth episode with an addition to other characters!
During Adventure Time, we watch Finn and Jake go through their numerous adventures, with a little sprinkle of Fionna and Cake because of Ice King. The land of Ooo is a post apocalyptic era that involves magic and unearthly creatures.
In this Fionna and Cake episode, we get to see what is going on in Cake the Cat’s little head as she mysteriously jumps from one universe to another. Spooky, right?
Spoilers ahead in this review. Fionna and Cake releases every Thursday on Max.
Story – Meow? (Where Am I?)
This episode starts off where the second one left off; Cake the Cat had jumped through a portal, shown through an ice cream cart, and flew out from the back of Simon’s head. Why? Well, Simon had opened a secret passage and didn’t realize it when he was trying to bring back his fiancee.
So, what we’ve been seeing in Episode 1 when Cake saw the blue hues from every ice manufactured thing was really a portal Simon was opening up.
So, going back to my episode 1 review, yes, those sparkles and blue hues were important. It was to bring Cake and Fionna into Finn’s world!
And from there, we see Cake going on her own adventure through the mysterious land of Ooo. But, first she had to freak out herself and Simon to get there. And – falling off the side of the human civilization island. And with cats being as they are, after falling thousands of feet, she ends up landing on her feet.
After that, with the talking collar she was granted access to because of Simon, she can speak her thoughts and interact with all the other creatures, humans, etc. We see her first evolution – her being able to talk.
I really enjoyed watching how Fionna and Cake are introduced in Adventure Time, even though this takes place years and years later, to the point Finn became an adult.
Throughout this episode, it was nice seeing Cake wander through a different world as a curious little cat, afraid and calling out to Fionna when she can’t handle it.
Then, when Fionna jumped through as well in this magical land of Ooo, she becomes super excited because she knows she jumped through a portal. And she knows that that portal led her to another universe outside her own.
We follow these outsiders run and fight their way through this new world, finally feeling adventurous like they always had wanted to feel back home. After Fionna runs to find Cake with the help of a little girl who is heavily rooted in Fionna and Cake lore, everything starts to come together.
With commotion from another universe happening, they get dropped into a little cube to help them become who they really were meant to be. But to their surprise, Fionna and Cake finally become the adventurous duo we all know and love from the Adventure Time Series.
Characters and Performances – New Creatures? Who’re You?
This episode was primarily about the secondary character, Cake. With a little sprinkle of side characters here and there, but I will get to them in a moment.
Cake is a spunky little character, she always has been. From the first time we laid eyes on her in Episode 1, to now, she has always been active in trying to figure out what is happening. Especially since she was starting to see weird things glow a blue hue.
Cake has such a well rounded personality, to her being spunky, and to her acting like, well a cat, where she just wants to explore and be on her own without Fionna. But, of course it can be short lived as she cries for Fionna to come save her because she is just a little cat. What I noticed was that the Squirrel was her first character that she met, and even just meeting him for a short time (first trying to eat him) she almost befriends him in a way. Only because she ate his cursed apples and made her small. So, with the help of also saving him from his old mates, he takes her to the market to get to her original size.
Now, we already know about Fionna and her personality, as well as Simon, but we soon run into a new character in this series; Prismo. For those of you who know Prismo from Adventure Time will know how he acts and who he is. For those of you who are new, Prismo is a two dimensional almost-like god who creates universes and wishes for those who seek it. He’s the one that keeps everything in check.
We see him as someone who became bored with his job doing the same old, same old. The same routine, the same people coming in to talk to him; to make wishes that pertain to them. But, we see a little bit of a change when he notices that something has changed his world in a small way, which brings Fionna and Cake into the picture. After that, he becomes more, you could say, awake.
Prismo turned from a two dimensional character (you get it?) to a character with shape. He got excited seeing them and changed them to their original format from their world, became curious, but then said that it wasn’t right that they were there because of a crossover. Then he began to question – how were they even there to begin with?
As for the performances, everyone did great. Roz Ryan still portrayed Cake in that spunky way. Her voice gives Cake a unique personality to her. She gave Cake some character, which is amazing since you use only your voice to portray your character.
Prismo, on the other hand, is voiced by a different actor. Many people loved Kumail Nanjiani as Prismo in the original franchise, Adventure Time, but I think Sean Rohani did a good job with voicing Prismo. He still gave that character a personality, especially by making his voice fluctuate whenever he was bored and not emotional. But when he had emotion, he really was able to make something out of it.
I know many people loved Kumail Nanjiani for his iconicness as an actor. Plus, he did such a good job in Adventure Time that people were disappointed when someone new took Prismo’s place in Fionna and Cake.
Cinematography and Sound – Oh, That Was Weird!
This show is full of amazing shots and sounds to make it unique. Like always, the cinematography makes this show feel different than Adventure Time. I really enjoyed the panning of the shots from old to new, and to show how Cake reacts to everything. She is scared, so she becomes frantic. But to show that she is afraid without her owner, we watch her run down a dark alley in this new world , showing that her unfamiliarity with this new place is taking over.
And the sounds of the future human world just proves that we are not in the regular, meek world. The whirring of futuristic energy bustles around Cake the Cat in the beginning of the episode. And the silence of her fall (except for her fearful screaming) from a great distance after running down the alley makes us afraid for Cake and her exploration. But, since she is a cat, we all anticipated that she would land on her feet, giving us all a laugh and a settled heart.
Many of the sounds in this episode just makes our emotions reel! And the cinematography just continues to amaze me with scenes joining together to make a cinematic masterpiece. What I really enjoyed was the scenes between when Prismo finally answers the crossover button and zaps Fionna and Cake into his cube, and just looks them over. He is so curious about how they arrived in his world, then notices they aren’t in their regular form.
When Fionna points out that they came out of Simon’s head, Prismo just nonchalantly Zaps Simon from his shower into the room too to interrogate him about their existence.
Editing and Pacing – For Cake the Cat to Gnaw On!
Like all others, the editing and pacing was perfect. I really enjoyed how this episode played out. We got to see Cake act like a cat with her curiosity leading her way. Mostly, after she fell from the Human city from above. But like everything else, the shiny thing caught her attention the most so she wants to go there.
The pacing of everything felt right and in place. It didn’t feel rushed or too slow. Everyone discovered the important stuff in a timely manner. Cake’s reaction to really enjoying the world is how you expect a cat to react, then immediately turning afraid because everybody is mad is a typical cat behavior.
The editing was nice too! I really loved the way they edited the scene with Cake at the market singing with the creatures. It didn’t feel cheesy, choppy or cringy. The scene was filled with colors, amazing audio, and had a joyous feeling in all. But, of course with her being a cat and wanting to steal, destroy and create a ruckus, I loved how it immediately went from something seen in her own world to the reality of where she was.
Even that scene was very well edited and well paced.
My Final Thoughts About Episode 3 – Cake the Cat
All together, I really enjoyed this episode. I loved learning more about Cake the Cat and her personality, and how she became the one we know otiginally. We get to really see how she is as a regular cat and how she thinks as she arrives in a magical universe. We don’t get to know her from her Fionna and Cake from Adventure Time, but rather we get to grow with her to the character we love.
This episode was enjoyable, and we finally got to jump into the action of Fionna and Cake!
