Zhu Yuan is the second limited S-Rank to release in Zenless Zone Zero and she’s getting a lot of attention for multiple reasons. Not only is she a cute, clumsy policewoman but Zhu Yuan is also shaping up to be one of ZZZ’s best main DPS units as the first Ether Attack Agent. Ether is an incredibly strong element against Ethereals, the main threat facing New Eridu, so any new Ether character is going to be a big hit. It doesn’t hurt that she has a fun, frenetic playstyle built around empowered gun-fu Basic Attacks. Zhu Yuan is likely going to stay powerful and meta for a long time to come, so you should learn how to effectively use her.
Here’s how to make the best Zhu Yuan build in Zenless Zone Zero. This guide will include a deep dive into Zhu Yuan’s kit and how you should play her alongside W-Engine and Drive Disc recommendations and pointers on what team compositions she works best in.

Zhu Yuan Release Date and Banner Availability
First and foremost, let’s go over when you can get Zhu Yuan and how long you have to pull on her in Zenless Zone Zero Version 1.0. Zhu Yuan is the second featured S-Rank Agent of ZZZ Version 1.0, meaning that she’s leading Phase 2, which starts on July 24th.
Zhu Yuan’s Exclusive Channel, “Unswerving Bullet”, will go live on July 24th 2024 and last until the end of Version 1.0 on August 13th 2024. Whenever you get lucky enough to pull an S-Rank Agent on Zhu Yuan’s banner, there is a 50% that the Agent you’ll receive will be Zhu Yuan: if you lose the 50/50 to a Standard Channel character such as Koleda or Lycaon, though, the next S-Rank you’ll receive from the banner is guaranteed to be Zhu Yuan. Additionally, the A-Rank Agents Nicole and Ben are also on rate-up on Zhu Yuan’s Exclusive Channel.
If you get unlucky and aren’t able to pull Zhu Yuan before the end of Version 1.0 on August 13th, you will have to wait until she gets a rerun in a future Version as her Exclusive Channel will disappear. Zhu Yuan will likely receive her first rerun by Version 1.4 but, if you desperately want her on your team, make sure to grab her before that end date.
Zenless Zone Zero Zhu Yuan Kit
Basic Attack
Next, let’s take a look at Zhu Yuan’s kit and how it works in detail, starting with her most important ability, her Basic Attack. By simply pressing the Basic Attack button, Zhu Yuan will enter Assault Mode and perform Don’t Move! In this state, she will unleash a flurry of martial arts, bullets, and Ether Buckshots which can combo up to five times, dealing Physical and Ether DMG. Whenever the 4th or 5th hit of Don’t Move! strikes and enemy, Zhu Yuan will gain 1 Enhanced Shotshell, an extremely important mechanic in Zhu Yuan’s kit.
By holding down the Basic Attack button, Zhu Yuan will, instead, enter Suppressor Mode and perform Please Do Not Resist, the most important skill in her entire arsenal. She unleashes three Shotshell piercing attacks, dealing Physical DMG to nearby opponents. If she has any Enhanced Shotshells, she will consume 1 Enhanced Shotshell to deal massive Ether DMG.
Zhu Yuan is primarily a Basic Attack-focused DPS unit, with her main source of damage being the Enhanced Shotshell attacks from her Suppressor Mode. And, while her Basic Attack combo is capable of generating a single Shotshell for her to use, her other Skills are all avenues for her to generate a much larger and more consistent flow of Enhanced Shotshells. Playing Zhu Yuan means juggling a lot of different Skills and abilities so that you can end up back at the same endpoint – which is Please Do Not Resist – with more resources, buffs, and Shotshells.
Dodge
Similar to her Basic Attack, Zhu Yuan’s Dash Attack has two versions depending on whether she’s in Assault Mode or Suppressor Mode. Her Assault Mode Dash Attack is Firepower Offensive and it has Zhu Yuan shoot her firearm during her dodge, dealing Physical DMG to a single enemy. Meanwhile, her Suppressor Mode Dash Attack is Overwhelming Firepower. This attack can only be triggered by moving Zhu Yuan during Please Do Not Resist. During this attack, Zhu Yuan will unleash a Shotshell attack, dealing Physical DMG, and consuming 1 Enhanced Shotshell to deal additional Ether DMG.
The final part of Zhu Yuan’s Dodge is her Dodge Counter, Fire Blast. If you attack after performing a Perfect Dodge, Zhu Yuan will fire at any enemies in front of her with an Ether Buckshot, dealing Ether DMG and generating 1 Enhanced Shotshell on the skill’s use.
Overwhelming Firepower is the only other way that Zhu Yuan can get rid of her Enhanced Shotshells so you’ll be weaving this attack in whenever you’re casting Please Do Not Resist. By holding down the Basic Attack button while dragging the joystick, you can resposition Zhu Yuan and fire off a powerful shot which continues her main combo. To get the most out of Zhu Yuan, you’ll need to learn how to balance this while also weaving in regular Basic Attacks, EX Special Attacks, Ultimates, assists, and more.
Assist
Zhu Yuan’s Quick Assist, Covering Shot, is very similar to her Dodge Counter, as it has her shoot at the enemies in front of her with an Ether Buckshot, dealing Ether DMG and generating 1 Enhanced Shotshell.
Meanwhile, her Guarded Backup Evasive Assist is more similar to Agent’s like Grace as it won’t directly parry an enemy attack: instead, switching in Zhu Yuan will activate Vital View, slowing down time and making her invulnerable during the attack. If you follow up this Evasive Assist with an attack, Zhu Yuan will perform the Defensive Counter Assist Follow-Up, attacking with a combination of martial arts and shotshells which deal Physical and Ether DMG while also generating 3 Enhanced Shotshells.
Special Attack
Zhu Yuan’s Special Attack is Buckshot Blast, an attack where she fires off an Ether Buckshot which deals Ether DMG to nearby opponents. By repeatedly pressing the Special Attack button, you can repeat this attack up to three times, firing off three individual Ether Buckshots.
If you cast Zhu Yuan’s Special Attack with enough energy, she’ll perform her Full Barrage, her EX Special Attack. Zhu Yuan shoots off a series of Ether Buckshots which explode and deal high Ether DMG to all nearby opponents. Additionally, unlike her regular Special Attack, she will gain 3 Enhanced Shotshells.
While far from a showstopper, Zhu Yuan’s Special Attack is a very reliable source of both additional Ether DMG and Enhanced Shotshells. You’ll often be using it to quickly regain Shotshells or stun an opponent so that you can return to her core Basic Attack combo to punish with high damage.
Chain Attack and Ultimate
Lastly, let’s take a look at Zhu Yuan’s Chain Attack and Ultimate ability. Like most characters in Zenless Zone Zero, Zhu Yuan’s Chain Attack and Ultimate are almost identical, with the difference being that her Ultimate deals far higher direct damage and Daze DMG.
When a Chain Attack is triggered and you choose to bring in Zhu Yuan or whenever Zhu Yuan activates her Ultimate ability, she will perform the Eradication Mode Skill. Here, Zhu Yuan uses a Modified Master Firearm to execute a saturated attack, firing off lasers and missiles which all deal high Ether DMG. This will also generate 3 Enhanced Shotshells.
Similar to Zhu Yuan’s Assist and her EX Special Attack, her Ultimate and Chain Attack isn’t her main source of damage but, instead, another way to get Enhanced Shotshells, the resource she needs to continue performing empowered Basic Attacks in the Supressor State. Despite this, her Ultimate, in particular, deals a very solid chunk of damage and inflicts a high amount of Daze, making it a decent option once you reach maximum Decibels.
Zhu Yuan Core Skill and Additional Ability
Zhu Yuan’s Core Skill is Special Ops Ammunition. While Zhu Yuan is under Suppressor Mode, using Enhanced Shotshells will increase her DMG, with that DMG bonus doubling if she’s attacking a Stunned target. Additionally, whenever Zhu Yuan enters the battlefield, she’ll immediately gain 6 Enhanced Shotshells.
Meanwhile, Zhu Yuan’s additional ability is Tactical Coordination, which activates whenever Zhu Yuan is paired with a Support Agent or another Agent from the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team. While active, Zhu Yuan gains a CRIT Rate bonus for a short time whenever she launches her EX Special Attack, Chain Attack, or Ultimate. Seeing as all three of those abilities are ways for her to get Enhanced Shotshells, Tactical Coordination is a way for Zhu Yuan to further increase the damage of her Supressor state Basic Attacks.
Zhu Yuan’s entire kit revolves around getting her a steady and consistent supply of Enhanced Shotshells and both of her Core Skills are no different. Her Core Skill not only instantly grants her two-thirds of her Shotshell limit whenever she enters the battlefield, but it also massively increases her damage with said Shotshells, whereas her Tactical Coordination rewards you with even more damage for weaving in attacks which grants Zhu Yuan Shotshells.
How to Play Zhu Yuan in Zenless Zone Zero
So, now that you know the ins and outs of Zhu Yuan’s kit and skills, how do you use her in a fight? As we mentioned earlier, Zhu Yuan’s main playstyle involves juggling a lot of different skills and abilities so that you can perform Please Do Not Resist – her Suppressor Mode Basic Attack – with as many buffs, bonuses, and Shellshots as possible.
Her core combo involves her two most important skills, which are her Basic Attack and Dash Attack. Upon entering the battlefield, Zhu Yuan will already have 6 Enhanced Shellshots thanks to her Core Skill, allowing you to immediately use Please Do Not Resist to deal a lot of Ether DMG. This will consume one Enhanced Shotshell to deal more damage.
Once you’ve used her Suppressor Mode Basic Attack, move Zhu Yuan while still holding the BA button to cast Overwhelming Firepower, her Suppressor State Dash Attack. This will resposition Zhu Yuan and consume another Enhanced Shotshell to deal even more damage. At this point, you just cycle between these two attacks until all of your Enhanced Shotshells are gone. Additionally, every time Zhu Yuan consumes her Enhanced Shotshells, she’ll increase the damage of those attacks thanks to her Core Skill.
- Zhu Yuan ETBs (+6 Enhanced Shotshells) > Please Do Not Resist (-1 Enhanced Shotshells) > Overwhelming Firepower (-1 Enhanced Shotshells) > Repeat until Zhu Yuan runs out of Enhanced Shell Shots
When Zhu Yuan runs out of Enhanced Shotshells, you have two main paths to take. The first is switching her out to another character, preferably a Support or Anomaly unit who can set up the enemy for when Zhu Yuan retakes the field. Once you’re ready, have Zhu Yuan return (preferably with a Quick Assist so that she will get an additional Enhanced Shotshell for free), granting her 6 Enhanced Shotshells for entering the battlefield. At this point, just continue the core combo again until you need to switch out again.
The second option for Zhu Yuan depends on whether you have access to her EX Special Attack or Ultimate. Both of these abilities generate 3 Enhanced Shotshells while also dealing substantial damage on their own. As such, if you want to keep Zhu Yuan on the battlefield for longer, you can have her perform these skills – along with dodge counters and assists – and then go back into her core combo to use up the Shotshells you just generated. At some point, you will have to switch out but this second combo chain lets you keep her out for just a bit longer.
- Switch out Zhu Yuan > Quick Assist Zhu Yuan (+1 Enhanced Shotshell) > Zhu Yuan ETBs (+6 Enhanced Shotshells) > Repeat core combo
- EX Special Attack / Ultimate (+3 Enhanced Shotshells) > Continue core combo > Switch out Zhu Yuan
Zhu Yuan Skill Priority Order
- Basic Attack
- Dodge
- EX Special Attack
- Ultimate
- Assist
If it wasn’t already obvious, most of your main damage is going to come from Zhu Yuan’s Basic Attacks and Dash Attacks. While most of your focus will be on the Suppressor State, the Assault State is equally as important for those beats in between, for the moments where you need to reposition or cover a bit more ground before committing to your main combo. You want Zhu Yuan to hit as hard as she can as so prioritise levelling her Basic Attack and Dodge to get the most out of her main kit.
Aside from those two skills, the rest of Zhu Yuan’s kit is primarily used to regenerate Enhanced Shotshells or set up your opponents for her Suppressor State. Levelling up and investing in these skills only increases their damage output, with the amount of Shotshells they generate being the same from Level 1 up to Level 16. As such, you have a bit more freedom in this regard as you can pick and choose which abilities you find more valuable.
Overall, though, we recommend levelling Zhu Yuan’s Special Attack next as you’ll likely be using it a lot more than either of her other skills: having her EX Special Attack deal higher direct and Daze damage results in faster fights and more opportunities for her Core Skills to kick in. After that, try levelling up her Ultimate as it will also improve her Chain Attack, something you’ll be using often as you continually recall and return Zhu Yuan to the battlefield.
Zhu Yuan’s Mindscape Cinema
While pulling on Zhu Yuan’s banner in ZZZ, you may get lucky enough to pull multiple copies of her. If this happens, additional copies of Zhu Yuan will be converted into consumables which you will use to unlock her Mindscape Cinema. Each character in ZZZ has six Mindscape Cinema slots, all of which will either provide them with a new ability or upgrade to their kit, or increase the levels of their Skills beyond normal means.
- Quick Reload: When Zhu Yuan activates Chain Attacks/Ultimates, she gains the Quick Reload effect. When Zhu Yuan has the Quick Reload effect and uses up all Enhanced Shotshells, the Quick Reload effect will be consumed to gain 6/9 Enhanced Shotshells instantly.
- Ether Ember: In Suppressive Mode, Zhu Yuan’s Anti-Interrupt level is increased and DMG taken reduced by 10%. When Zhu Yuan hits an enemy with Enhanced Shotshells, deal 10% more Basic Attack: Please Do Not Resist and Dash Attack: Overwhelming Firepower Ether DMG, stacking up to 5 times and lasting for 5s. Each shot adds one stack of this effect, and repeated triggers reset the duration.
- Public Security Training: Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2.
- Ether Perforation: When Zhu Yuan hits an enemy with Enhanced Shotshells, her Basic Attack: Please Do Not Resist and Dash Attack: Overwhelming Firepower ignore 25% of the target’s Ether RES.
- Special Ops Training: Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2.
- Expanded Energy Pack III: When Zhu Yuan consumes a total of 12 Enhanced Shotshells, she receives the Ether Afterglow effect, and the Energy cost of the next EX Special Attack is reduced by 30. Launching an EX Special Attack will consume Ether Afterglow and shoot an additional 4-bullet Ether Buckshot. Each extra bullet deals DMG equal to 220% of Zhu Yuan’s ATK.
For low spenders or those looking to conserve their Polychrome count, Zhu Yuan’s C1 is a great quality-of-life improvement which greatly increases the uptime of her empowered Basic Attacks, giving you yet another avenue of earning Enhanced Shotshells outside of ending her BA combo or using her EX Special. Additionally, her C2 simply improves the damage of her main damaging options – namely her Suppressor state Basic Attack and Suppressor state Dash Attack – while also improving her survivability.
Zhu Yuan’s Best W-Engines in ZZZ
Best in Slot: Riot Supressor Mark VI (Attacker)
Zhu Yuan’s signature W-Engine is the S-Rank Riot Supressor Mark VI, an Attacker W-Engine which you can get by rolling on the Limited W-Engine Channel while Zhu Yuan’s Limited Banner is still ongoing. The Riot Supressor Mark VI is far and away Zhu Yuan’s best option when it comes to W-Engines as both its primary stat bonuses and its main effect are tailor-made with Zhu Yuan in mind, greatly increasing her damage potential with some huge CRIT and ATK bonuses.
At level 60, the Riot Supressor Mark VI will provide the wearer with 714 ATK and a massive 48% CRIT DMG. Meanwhile, the Security Patrol effect will also increase the wielder’s CRIT Rate by 15% – meaning that the Riot Supressor is one of the rare W-Engines to increase both CRIT values – and provide them with 8 Charge stacks whenever they launch an EX Special Attack. Whenever the equipper’s Basic Attack deals Ether DMG, they consume one Charge to increase the damage dealt by 35%.
Running the Riot Supressor greatly enhances Zhu Yuan’s rotations as you’ll use her EX Special Attack to generate Charge stacks and Enhanced Shotshells, both of which will massively boost her next few Basic Attacks. Seeing as most of Zhu Yuan’s damage already comes from those boosted Basic Attacks, this W-Engine effect just allows her to do her job even better. Honestly, there’s not a whole lot else to this W-Engine: it simply improves Zhu Yuan’s already great damage potential and combat rotations, making them far more rewarding to use.
Best Replacement W-Engines for Zhu Yuan
Of course, many will be unwilling to part with their Polychromes, no matter how good Zhu Yuan’s weapon is. In that case, you’ll need to turn to Zenless Zone Zero’s catalogue of other Attacker W-Engines and, fortunately, a lot of them work well on Zhu Yuan. Do note that we won’t be discussing any limited S-Rank W-Engines (such as Ellen’s Deep Sea Visitor) as they’re not only rare but are often extremely specialised for only a handful of units.
If you aren’t able to get Zhu Yuan’s signature W-Engine, consider trying one of the following Attacker W-Engines on her, instead:
- The Brimstone (Gacha S-Rank W-Engine): Upon hitting an enemy with a Basic Attack, Dash Attack, or Dodge Counter, the equipper’s ATK increases by 3.5% for 8s, stacking up to 8 times. This effect can trigger once every 0.5s. The duration of each stack is calculated separately.
- Cannon Rotator (Battle Pass A-Rank W-Engine): Increases ATK by 7.5%. Attacks that land a critical hit on an enemy will inflict an additional 200% of ATK as DMG. This effect can trigger once every 8s.
- Starlight Engine (Craftable A-Rank W-Engine): Launching a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist increases the equipper’s ATK by 12% for 12s.
The Brimstone is Soldier 11’s signature W-Engine and the only S-Rank W-Engine we’re recommending, largely thanks to the fact that you can purchase it from the Store with enough Residual Signals. As an S-Rank, it’s easily the best replacement option for Zhu Yuan, allowing her to benefit from a meaty ATK% bonus at baseline while also granting her access to an easy-to-stack ATK boost that gels extremely well with her Basic Attack-focused playstyle. You will lose out on a good bit of CRIT but you can make that up by getting lucky with your Discs.
If The Brimstone is still a step too far, though, we’d recommend going for the ever-reliable Starlight Engine, which you can either get from the gacha or you can craft it for cheap at the Gadget Store, making it a super F2P-friendly option for Zhu Yuan. That isn’t even mentioning its main effect which also slots in perfectly with how Zhu Yuan’s focus on Dodge Counters. Meanwhile, the Cannon Rotator is a solid option for those looking to focus on CRIT with Zhu Yuan.
- Cannon Rotator
- Starlight Engine
Zhu Yuan’s Best Drive Discs
When it comes to Zhu Yuan’s best Drive Disc combinations in Zenless Zone Zero, you have two main options:
- 4pc Chaotic Metal + 2pc Woodpecker Electro: Increases Ether DMG by 10% and CRIT Rate by 8%. The equipper’s CRIT DMG increases by 20%. When any character in the squad triggers Corruption’s additional DMG, this effect further increases by 5.5% for 8s, stacking up to 6 times. Repeated triggers reset the duration.
- 4pc Woodpecker Electro + 2pc Chaotic Metal: Increases Ether DMG by 10% and CRIT Rate by 8%. Triggering a critical hit with a Basic Attack, Dodge Counter, or EX Special Attack increases the equipper’s ATK by 9% for 6s. The buff duration for different skills is calculated separately.
First, let’s go over 4pc Chaotic Metal. As we’ll discuss shortly, Nicole is far-and-away Zhu Yuan’s best teammate (at least as of 1.0) and serves as an extra source of Ether DMG for easy Corruption triggers. In this scenario, Corruption will be your team’s main Anomaly effect, allowing you to benefit from that bonus CRIT DMG far more often. CRIT and ATK are the two most vital stats for an Attacker in ZZZ and giving Zhu Yuan an easy way to increase her CRIT DMG by upwards of 50% is huge, especially because it lets you focus more on CRIT Rate and consistency in your Disc Drive stats.
On the other hand, going 4pc Woodpecker allows you to lean less on Ether and more on CRIT, which may prove more useful as additional Public Security units like Qingyi or Jane Doe release. In this composition, you’ll be gaining additional ATK as a reward for triggering critical hits, massively increasing Zhu Yuan’s damage, no matter what team composition she’s in. Going all in on Woodpecker is better for making Zhu Yuan more flexible in team compositions, whereas 4pc Chaotic Metal is the more potent but limiting Drive Disc combination.
Most Important Stats for Zhu Yuan
Selecting your Drive Disc sets is only the first step, though, as you’ll also need to choose discs with the right sub-stats if you want to make your Zhu Yuan the best she can be. As an Attacker, the three most important stats for Zhu Yuan are ATK, CRIT Rate, and CRIT DMG, all of which will exponentially increase her damage potential.
Here are the main stats you should be hunting for on Zhu Yuan’s Drive Discs in Zenless Zone Zero:
- Drive Disc 4: CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG
- Drive Disc 5: Ether DMG / ATK%
- Drive Disc 6: ATK%
Meanwhile, here are the best individual sub-stats you should be searching for on Zhu Yuan’s Drive Discs:
- ATK%
- CRIT Rate
- CRIT DMG
- Anomaly Proficiency
Zhu Yuan Team Composition Recommendations
Zhu Yuan, Nicole, and Anby
In Version 1.0 of ZZZ, Zhu Yuan is pretty limited in terms of team compositions. She’s the only playable member of the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team, meaning that she needs to rely on Support Agents to activate her Tactical Coordination ability. Despite this, Zhu Yuan’s best team is not only one of the strongest in the whole game but it’s also incredibly cheap and easy to make.
Zhu Yuan’s best team is an Ether-focused composition comprised of herself, Nicole, and Anby. This team is excellent for many reasons, with perhaps the most important being that it is super F2P friendly. Nicole and Anby are both starting units. Furthermore, Nicole is a rate-up A-Rank Agent on Zhu Yuan’s banner and all players are given Anby’s signature W-Engine for free. Aside from Zhu Yuan herself, this team is dirt cheap to make while being incredibly powerful.
- Zhu Yuan (Riot Suppressor Mark VI) | 4pc Chaotic Metal, 2pc Woodpecker Electro
- Nicole (The Vault) | 4pc Swing Jazz, 2pc Chaotic Metal
- Anby (Demara Battery Mark II) | 4pc Shockstar Disco, 2pc Thunder Metal
Nicole is far and away Zhu Yuan’s pairing, thanks in large part to her role as an Ether-based Support Agent. As a Support character, Nicole can trigger Zhu Yuan’s Tactical Cooperation skill, greatly improving the viability and damage output of your team’s main attacker. In addition to this, Nicole inflicts DEF shred onto opponents with her enhanced bullets (Basic Attack or Dash Attack) and ether field (Special Attack, Chain Attack, or Ultimate) and she can even increase the entire team’s Ether DMG using her additional ability.
Then you have Anby, the team’s primary Stunner. As a member of the Cunning Hares, Anby’s additional ability will be active thanks to Nicole, allowing Anby to have incredibly high uptime with on EX Special Attack, which is her best source of Daze. Zhu Yuan’s Suppressor Mode attacks all deal massively increased damage to Stunned targets, making Anby a vital part of this team’s success. Pair that with Nicole’s DEF shred and Anby can double as a potent sub-DPS who softens up and stuns targets so that Zhu Yuan can rip to the shreds with her Shotshell attacks.
Alternative Stunner: Qingyi
Alternatively, there is an upcoming Agent who could feasibly replace Anby and work alongside Zhu Yuan and Nicole. That’s Qingyi, Zhu Yuan’s android coworker from Public Security. Not only is she another character from the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team (meaning that Zhu Yuan no longer has to rely on Support Agents to trigger her additional ability) but she’s also another Electric Stunner, the same kind of Agent as Anby. As an S-Rank, Qingyi is likely to have higher final stat totals and more powerful abilities.
However, there is one big problem with replacing Anby with Qingyi and that’s that Qingyi is a limited S-Rank unit. If you plan on pulling for Zhu Yuan and her W-Engine, you likely won’t have a lot of Polychrome left for when Qingyi shows up: as such, only the extremely lucky, or the extremely wealthy, will be able to make this composition shine. So, while Qingyi is a much better character on paper for premium players purely based on her position as an S-Rank, Anby retains her role in the team for F2P or low spenders.
That was how to make the best Zhu Yuan build in Zenless Zone Zero.
