Weapon evolutions are the biggest power spikes in Vampire Crawlers. A normal weapon can carry you through early fights, but evolved weapons are what let runs stabilize, clear dense waves, and finish harder stages. The other side of that system is combos: even the best evolved card underperforms if you are playing it in the wrong mana order.
1. How to do Weapon Evolution
Most evolutions use one base weapon card plus one specific item card. Once both are in your deck, you need the base weapon to still have an empty gem socket. From there, you can evolve at an Evolution Statue or by getting an evolution chance from a chest or boss reward.
When the evolution happens, the base weapon is consumed and replaced by the evolved form, while the supporting item usually stays in your deck.
- Get the base weapon, for example, a Knife.
- Get the matching passive item, like Bracer.
- Do not slot a gem into the base weapon.
- Reach an Evolution Statue or find an Evolution Gem.
- Evolve the weapon before your deck gets too bloated.

3. Best Weapon Evolutions to Prioritize First
Not every evolution gives the same value in a normal run. The best early priorities are usually those that either improve survivability, deliver a clean damage spike without an awkward setup, or remain useful even when fights get crowded.
- Bloody Tear – Whip + Hollow Heart: This is one of the easiest strong evolutions to build around because it combines solid arc damage with healing on crit.
- Thousand Edge – Knife + Bracer: This is one of the best early damage spikes because it gives strong pressure without asking for a complicated setup. It also fits naturally into combo-focused decks because it works well in the middle of mana chains and scales cleanly with multiplied turns.
- Unholy Vespers – King Bible + Spellbinder: This is one of the best defensive evolutions in the game, giving you continuous contact damage plus knockback and strong close-range control.
- Hellfire – Fire Wand + Spinach: This is one of the strongest raw burst evolutions and one of the cleanest direct-damage upgrades in the game. It is even better on Arca, because Fire Wand starts at 0 mana for that character, which makes the path into Hellfire smoother than usual.
- NO FUTURE – Runetracer + Armor: This is one of the best late-run evolutions because it turns bouncing projectiles into explosive hazards and gives excellent backline pressure on dense floors.
4. How to Get the Grim Grimoire
The Grim Grimoire is a relic that lets you check discovered weapon evolutions from the pause menu during a run, which makes it one of the most useful unlocks if you are actively chasing evolutions. It is in the Library West Wing of the Inlaid Library.
- Unlock and enter the Inlaid Library. The Grim Grimoire is tied to this stage.
- Head west from the starting area. Current guides place the relic on the west side of the library.
- Keep exploring the west wing until you find the relic pickup. Relics can appear anywhere on the relevant floor layout, so keep moving through the area instead of turning back too early.
- Pick up the Grim Grimoire. Once collected, it is permanently unlocked on your account.
- Open the pause menu in future runs to use it. The Grim Grimoire shows the discovered evolution recipes during a dungeon run.
5. Best Tips for Getting Evolutions Consistently
These tips focus on the common mistakes that ruin evolution setups and the habits that make it much easier to hit the upgrade you are aiming for. The biggest factors are keeping the base weapon eligible, holding the correct ingredient card, and recognizing the evolution chance as soon as it appears.
- Do not socket gems blindly. A gemmed base weapon can lose evolution eligibility, so random upgrades can cost you the evolution you were building toward.
- Know the real ingredient card. An item card is not the same thing as a matching gem effect, even if the icon or stat overlap makes it look similar.
- Keep the base weapon and ingredient together in the deck. You need both active at the same time before the game will offer the evolution.
- Take evolutions early when the chance appears; holding out for the “perfect moment” is usually worse than taking the immediate power spike.
- Use the Grim Grimoire during runs. Once a card type is collected, you can check the Grimoire from the pause menu to see what evolutions are possible.
