Pokemon Champions: How To Build a Trick Room Team

Build a Trick Room team in Pokémon Champions with reliable setters, slow attackers, and partners for both Singles and Doubles. This guide explains how to manage downtime and pick Pokémon that benefit most.

pokemon-champions-trick-room-coverWhile Magic Room and Wonder Room are never used in competitive battling, Trick Room is a powerful cornerstone to build teams around in Pokémon Champions. While active, Trick Room flips Speed-based move order and turns slow, bulky attackers into the team’s main pressure. This guide covers Regulation M-A and may need updates in future seasons.

1. What Trick Room Does in Pokémon Champions

Trick Room inverts the order in which Pokémon attack based on their Speed for five turns, counting the turn it’s used as the first one. Therefore, the Pokémon with the lowest Speed moves first for four more turns. Unlike weather and terrain conditions, there are no Pokémon that summon Trick Room through an Ability.

Trick Room removes the need for Speed investment, but doesn’t affect any other condition that changes turn order.

  • Certain actions unaffected: Switching Pokémon and Mega Evolution still occur before moves.
  • Priority is unaffected: Moves with higher priority still occur first. If multiple Pokémon use a move with the same increased priority, the one with the lower Speed moves first.
  • Weather wars: Trick Room reverses weather-setting order; the faster weather setter will override the slower one.
  • Trick Room reduced priority: Trick Room has the lowest priority of all moves. It will always go last unless its partner uses After You on it.
  • Can end prematurely: If Trick Room is used while it’s already in effect, it will end.

2. How to Minimize Trick Room’s Downtime

Since Trick Room can’t be replenished before it runs out, it always has at least one turn of downtime between uses. Downtime can last longer if your active Pokémon cannot use Trick Room. Your setter also has to survive the reset turn before it can bring Trick Room back.

Trick Room teams always need ways to deal with its downtime.

  • Delay its use: Use Trick Room once your Pokémon is in two-hit KO range, or your opponent’s is in one-hit KO range.
  • Boost your Speed: On Trick Room’s last turn, use Agility or Rock Polish to ensure your Pokémon outspeeds your opponent’s when it runs out.
  • Double Trick Room: In Double Battles, make both of your Pokémon use Trick Room when it’s about to expire to start it anew.

3. Effective Users of Trick Room

The ideal Trick Room user needs to be able to take a hit (or two in Double Battles). Choose a setter with enough bulk to survive the first turn. Use Mental Herb to stop Taunt, or pair it with Follow Me/Rage Powder support to guarantee the setup.

3.1. Best Farigiraf Builds

Farigiraf is the only Pokémon with the Armor Tail Ability, which protects it and its partner from priority moves. This prevents your opponent from bypassing Trick Room. More importantly, it also prevents Farigiraf from being hit by Fake Out.

Farigiraf Trick Room Bulky Attacker for Singles

With Cud Chew, Farigiraf is surprisingly sturdy and can restore its HP with its Sitrus Berry a second time.

  • SP Allocation: 32 HP, 32 Sp. Atk, 1 Def, 1 Sp. Def
  • Nature: Quiet
  • Ability: Cud Chew
  • Held Item: Sitrus Berry
  • Moves: Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, Earthquake, Trick Room
  • Strategy: Use Farigiraf’s bulk and Sitrus Berry recovery to set Trick Room, then pressure with Psychic as the default attack. Use Dazzling Gleam on Dark-types and Earthquake on Steel-types that block its Psychic damage.

With Armor Tail and Mental Herb, stopping Farigiraf from using Trick Room is extremely difficult.

  • Nature: Relaxed
  • Ability: Armor Tail
  • Held Item: Mental Herb
  • Moves: Expanding Force, Psychic Terrain, Helping Hand, Trick Room
  • Strategy: Be wary of Bug and Dark-type attacks, and Hypnosis/Sleep Powder users. They can stop this build from using Trick Room, so Clefable or Sinistcha as a partner can redirect these moves from Farigiraf. After Trick Room is up, you have two options. Use Helping Hand to buff its partner’s attack or use Psychic Terrain to buff its Expanding Force and negate priority attacks, even if Farigiraf leaves the battlefield.

3.2. Best Hatterene Builds

As one of two Pokémon with access to Magic Bounce and Trick Room, Hatterene doesn’t need a Mental Herb to stop a Taunt. It also innately reflects entry hazards and other status moves. This does, however, make Hatterene’s role easy to predict.

Hatterene Trick Room Medic for Singles

This spread is best for mid to late game if your opponent stalls long enough for Trick Room to expire the first time.

  • SP Allocation: 32 HP, 32 Sp. Atk, 2 Def
  • Nature: Quiet
  • Ability: Magic Bounce
  • Held Item: Focus Sash
  • Moves: Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, Healing Wish, Trick Room
  • Strategy: After setting up Trick Room, use one of Hatterene’s STABs if its opponent doesn’t resist them. Otherwise, use Healing Wish to fully restore a teammate who does pose a threat against its opponent.

Hatterene’s ideal partner uses Fire-type attacks to pressure Steel-types that resist its STAB moves.

  • SP Allocation: 32 Sp. Atk, 32 Sp. Def, 2 HP
  • Nature: Quiet
  • Ability: Magic Bounce
  • Held Item: Focus Sash
  • Moves: Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, Trick Room, Protect
  • Strategy: As a lead, use Protect to thwart any Fake Out attempt, then set up Trick Room. Afterwards, attack with a STAB or switch out depending on your opponent’s Pokémon.

3.3. Best Klefki Build

As the only Trick Room user with a Steel-type (not counting Mega Chimecho), Klefki has many resistances. Its Prankster Ability also ensures its support moves bypass its own Trick Room. Klefki is only useful in Double Battles.

Klefki Trick Room Support for Doubles

Klefki is purely a supportive Pokémon, so it needs a partner to apply offensive pressure.

  • SP Allocation: 32 HP, 25 Sp. Def, 9 Def
  • Nature: Bold
  • Ability: Prankster
  • Held Item: Mental Herb
  • Moves: Reflect, Light Screen, Trick Room, Dazzling Gleam
  • Strategy: After setting up Trick Room, use Reflect or Light Screen, depending on whether your opponent uses physical or special attacks. Once properly defended, use Dazzling Gleam to hit both opposing Pokémon.

3.4. Best Mimikyu Build

Mimikyu’s Disguise ensures that a single hit will never stop it from setting up Trick Room, no matter how powerful it is. Its three attack-type immunities also help it avoid common disruption, including Fake Out. Mimikyu is only useful in Single Battles.

Mimikyu Trick Room Versatile Attacker

Unlike other spreads, Mimikyu doesn’t always need to set up Trick Room as soon as possible.

  • SP Allocation: 32 HP, 32 Atk, 2 Def
  • Nature: Adamant
  • Ability: Disguise
  • Held Item: Lum Berry
  • Moves: Shadow Claw, Play Rough, Taunt, Trick Room
  • Strategy: Only use Trick Room if Mimikyu is slower than its opponent. Once it’s clear that Mimikyu will move first, attack with Shadow Claw for reliability or Play Rough for damage. It doesn’t need a third attack because nothing available in Champions resists both Ghost and Fairy-type attacks at this time. Use Taunt to shut down opposing support Pokémon. 

3.5. Best Sinistcha Build

Sinistcha stands out for its immunity to Fake Out and its Hospitality Ability. It can also redirect attacks with Rage Powder. Like Klefki, Sinistcha is only useful in Double Battles.

Sinistcha Trick Room Support for Doubles

Sinistcha brings nearly every tool a Doubles Trick Room team wants: Matcha Gotcha for spread damage and burn chance, Rage Powder for redirection, Hospitality for partner healing, Protect, and Trick Room.

  • SP Allocation: 32 Def, 32 Sp. Def, 2 HP
  • Nature: Calm
  • Ability: Hospitality
  • Held Item: Leftovers
  • Moves: Matcha Gotcha, Rage Powder, Trick Room, Protect
  • Strategy: Like the Mimikyu spread, Sinistcha doesn’t always need to set up Trick Room on the first move. Only use it if its partner is very slow. Use Rage Powder to thwart a Fake Out aimed at its partner, or any predicted attacks that Sinistcha will resist. 

3.6. Best Galarian Slowking Builds

Galarian Slowking works on dedicated Trick Room and mixed-speed teams because its low Speed lets it benefit from Trick Room on its own. Regenerator also gives it more chances to switch in and set the move again. Like its Johtonian counterpart, Galarian Slowking also has Chilly Reception.

Galarian Slowking Trick Room Attacker for Singles

Even if you’re not running a Snow team, Galarian Slowking makes great use of Chilly Reception thanks to Regenerator.

  • SP Allocation: 32 Sp. Atk, 31 HP, 3 Def
  • Nature: Quiet
  • Ability: Regenerator
  • Held Item: Colbur Berry
  • Moves: Psychic, Sludge Bomb, Chilly Reception, Trick Room
  • Strategy: After setting up Trick Room, attack with Galarian Slowking’s STABs. Sludge Bomb has a 30% chance to poison, while Psychic hits Poison-types and Bulletproof Pokémon. Use Chilly Reception if the opponent has a Steel-type or relies on different weather. Use Chilly Reception differently depending on Trick Room’s status. Under Trick Room, it acts as a fast pivot to ease prediction; outside Trick Room, it becomes a slow pivot that brings a teammate in safely.

With a few adjustments to its Single Battle build, Galarian Slowking shuts down your opponent’s defenses.

  • SP Allocation: 31 HP, 27 Def, 8 Sp. Def
  • Nature: Relaxed
  • Ability: Regenerator
  • Held Item: Colbur Berry
  • Moves: Sludge Wave, Imprison, Trick Room, Protect
  • Strategy: If necessary, use Protect to thwart an incoming Fake Out before setting up Trick Room. After doing so, use Imprison to ensure your opponent can’t defend themselves or undo your Trick Room. Sludge Wave hits all other Pokémon, so only use it if Galarian Slowking’s partner is a Steel-type or uses Protect.

3.7. Alternate Trick Room Setters

Among the Pokémon available in Champions, 35 of them can use Trick Room. Use the table as a backup pool when the main setters do not fit your team. Prioritize bulk, useful defensive typing, and support moves that cover what your Trick Room core is missing, especially if your team already stacks Psychic or Ghost weaknesses.

4. Trick Room Slow Tiers

Slow tiers matter most in Trick Room mirrors, where the slower Pokémon moves first while the effect is active. Some Pokémon become slower after Mega Evolution as a drawback in exchange for a larger stat boost. Trick Room teams benefit greatly from this.

5. Best Teammates for Trick Room Teams

Do not make all six Pokémon slow by default. Trick Room always expires, and your team needs at least one way to function during the reset turn before you set it again. A strong priority attack greatly reduces the chance of a sweeper destroying your team.

Pick teammates that fit one of these roles: slow wallbreakers, priority users, anti-Trick Room tech, or Ghost/Dark resistances.
