Arguably one of the most beloved videogame genres by gaming enthusiasts, open-world experiences offer the player freedom and autonomy like no other genre. Let’s check out 5 great open-world games available on Xbox Game Pass!
Subnautica: Below Zero
Starting off this selection we’ve got Subnautica: Below Zero.
Much like its predecessor, Subnautica: Below Zero is an open-world survival action-adventure game. Played from a first-person perspective, the player has to explore the unknown environments in order to survive on an alien planet. Players are able to collect raw materials to craft all sorts of equipment and tools.
Like 2014’s Subnautica, the Below Zero experience finds its success in the discovery aspect of the game. The immense world and almost infinite possibilities make for an incredible open-world experience, in an overly-saturated genre.
Combine a compelling narrative with incredible visuals and what do you get? Arguably one of the best survival games out there. Subnautica: Below Zero truly builds on the immense success of its predecessor. For those reasons, I chose to include it in this selection of great open-world games on Xbox Game Pass.
Microsoft Flight Simulator
Next in line, we’ve got Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The amateur flight simulator can be seen as a literal definition of the term open-world, as it allows the player to travel to wherever they feel like. It features a wide array of different airplanes and real-life locations to explore.
As a fan of air travel, this one felt like a must when writing this list. Microsoft Flight Simulator is an incredibly detailed and endless experience that will make spend countless hours without you even noticing. It simply gives you a rush like no other game. If you haven’t tried it, please go ahead, trust me.
It is one of the best, if not the best, simulator games out there, and for that, I chose to include it in this selection of great open-world games.
State of Decay 2
Walking into zombie territory, we’ve got State of Decay 2.
Just like its predecessor, State of Decay 2 focuses on the scavenging aspect, allowing players to build a community, manage resources and survive against millions of zombies.
For zombie fans, this is a must-play. Although State of Decay 2 might have some technical issues, those are completely overrun by its engaging gameplay and pleasing combat mechanics.
Not to mention the co-op aspect, which brings a whole other level of fun to the game. The looting system is top-notch as well, combining for an amazing experience every gamer should have at least once.
Forza Horizon 5
Transitioning to the racing genre, we’ve got Forza Horizon 5.
Set in a fictional representation of Mexico, Forza Horizon 5 features the largest map in the series. Forza 5’s customization systems feature custom liveries, tunes, and a lot of other mechanical parts, not present in its predecessor.
Firstly, in my opinion, Forza Horizon 5 is the best racing game available. Its stunning visuals combined with the smooth gameplay and flawless customization make for an arcade experience like no other. Secondly, due to its amazing replayability, you can never get enough of Forza 5.
Also, as part of the selection of major game releases back in November 2021, Forza Horizon 5 had to be included in this list of 5 great open-world games on Xbox Game Pass.
Despite being one of the greats when it comes to shooter games on Xbox Game Pass, this selection also includes Halo Infinite.
The first-person shooter follows Master Chief and his fight against the Banished in the ringworld Zeta Halo. Halo Infinite also features multiple weapons and vehicles that make a return from previous entries.
It’s a classic. There is no going wrong when it comes to Halo. Especially if we are talking about Halo Infinite. For me, this game is the best in the entire franchise and arguably one of the best shooters of all time.
It’s an epic and fun journey with unbelievable visuals and a captivating narrative, setting the bar incredibly high for other similar experiences. For those reasons, I chose to include Halo Infinite in this selection of 5 great open-world games available on Xbox Game Pass.
After all these suggestions, you’ve got your hands full for quite some time. Enjoy the exploration!
