March is a bit of a quiet month for horror movies. More peculiar films are releasing, but they are still ones that hardcore fans of horror films are sure to want to seek out. Horror, more than any other genre, is able to experiment with strange premises, such as the one in Death Of A Unicorn, and make it work. As usual, release dates can change and new films can be announced. But for now, let’s take a look at the most anticipated horror movies releasing in March! This list descends from #5 to #1 horror movie of the month.
Ash
| Release Date | March 21st (Shudder) |
| Director | Flying Lotus |
| Main Cast | Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais |
| Duration | 95 mins |
Synopsis
A woman wakes up t find her spacecrew brutally killed. Her attempt to uncover what happens sets off a series of horrific events.
Overview
Ash is a sci-fi horror starring a pretty great cast. Although the trailer hooked me, I’m unsure on how well made this movie will be. I know very little of the director and writer on board so I remain cautiously optimistic. I’m hoping it’s as great as I think it can be and if not, at least make for a scary good time.
Bloat
| Release Date | March 7th |
| Director | Pablo Absento |
| Main Cast | Ben McKenzie, Bojana Novakovic, Sawyer Jones |
| Duration | 87 mins |
Synopsis
After a boy almost drowns in the lake, the parents begin to notice that something is wrong with their son.
Overview
Personally, Bloat excites me more than most on this list. That is mostly due to the found footage approach they’re taking here. It has the found footage point of view similar to Unfriended and Searching where the events are shown through a monitor. Each time I’ve seen this approach, I’ve been fully engaged throughout the runtime of the film and find that the pacing is generally perfect. The film being set in Japan also excites me as they look to be injecting the Kappa folklore into the film. The director has made a few shorts in the past, both of which have received nods from horror legends such as Eli Roth and Guillermo Del Toro.
Locked
| Release Date | March 21st |
| Director | David Yarovesky |
| Main Cast | Bill Skarsgård, Anthony Hopkins |
| Duration | 95 mins |
Synopsis
A thief who breaks into a luxurious vehicle is locked inside and is forced to endure psychological horror.
Overview
Locked is looking to be a fantastic watch. I often find that films with only one primary setting are forced to be as creative as possible. As a result, these films tend to have a lot of very fun and interesting ideas. I’m not sure if the script is going to be tight enough to engage the audience or if the psychological horror aspect will take that crown. I’m happy to see Bill Skarsgård in a leading role not involving a bucketload of makeup too!
Woman In The Yard
| Release Date | March 28th |
| Director | Jaume Collet-Serra |
| Main Cast | Danielle Deadwyler, Russell Hornsby, Okwui Okpokwasili |
| Duration | 88 mins |
Synopsis
A mysterious woman cloaked in black robe regularly appears on a family’s front yard delivering chilling warnings and unsettling messages.
Overview
Probably the most traditional horror movie releasing in March is Woman In The Yard. That’s not to say that this film won’t end up being good though! What gets me most excited about this film is the director. Jaume directed many action films, but he also has had his hand in horror with films such as The Shallows back in 2016, showing he can work with suspense. Even his action films have a ton of suspense. It’s probably safe to say that the skill of crafting a good suspenseful film will translate to the Woman In The Yard.
Death of a Unicorn
| Release Date | March 28th |
| Director | Alex Scharfman |
| Main Cast | Jenna Ortega, Pual Rudd, Téa Leoni |
| Duration | 104 mins |
Overview
After running over a unicorn, Elliot and Ridley take it to a pharmaceutical retreat where they discover it has special curative properties. Mayhem then quickly ensues.
Synopsis
A24 is known to experiment with their films. They consistently release original films such as these where the plot seems so absurd, but are incredibly well thought out and deep. Death of a Unicorn is probably not going to be the scariest film on this list, but it has a great cast and an amazingly bizarre premise. From the trailer, it looks as though the horror will kick in the end, but I have a feeling this will lean more towards comedy than anything else. Either way, this is sure to be one hell of a ride when it releases in March.
