The Last of us Part 1 Remake has taken the top spot on the UK boxed charts. The launch of the remake on PlayStation 5 shows us that, once again, the spirit of Naughty Dogs’ beloved title is back. Having released this past Friday, September 2nd, sales of The Last of Us Part 1 Remake have stolen the top spot with dramatic speed.

However. we must bear in mind the nature of the UK boxed charts. The sales data relates to physical releases of games. This means the digital market could be a very different story. Yet, with the rise of digital releases taking precedence over physical, it is encouraging to see that the market for recent physical releases is still active.

According to the data, The Last of Us Part 1 Remake sold around half the units of the previous week’s no.1 Saints Row. The games’ sales this week have dropped by 80% physically with critical and fan reception being lukewarm to the reboot of the series.

Looking further into the data available on the UK boxed charts, we also gain a window into other titles in the popular games landscape. Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Forbidden West is still standing strong in second place, despite a 46% drop in sales. Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is in third, F1 Manager 2022 is in fourth, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is in fifth.

The fact that Sony holds the top two spots this week is evidence of player faith in their IP, despite the public backlash to them with the recent lawsuit positioned. Furthermore, the sales data show a demand for arcade titles in the UK at least.

Still, we can’t deny that the sales data for The Last of Us Part 1 Remake is proof that a hunger for the franchise is as strong as ever. This relates to returning and new fans and, with the HBO TV adaptation on the horizon, it is clear that the future of The Last of Us is bright.
