A new title called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge has been announced by Tribute Games and Dotemu.
The game is based on the highly popular animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and will be a side-scroller, brawler that can be played by up to four players simultaneously. The players, of course, will take on the roles of the titular turtles, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael, as they battle the hordes of soldiers sent on by their mortal enemy Shredder.
In the trailer, their journalist accomplice April O’ Neil can also be seen kicking a few enemies, but it remains to be seen if she will be a playable character. Some other well-known characters will also be making their return, such as the turtles’ teacher Master Splinter and Shredder’s notorious goons, Bebop and Rocksteady.
The game will be more reminiscent of the light-hearted 90’s animated style and less of the CGI series that airs on Nickelodeon. In fact, it will be quite similar to some of the older titles dedicated to the franchise, such as the 1989 arcade game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the sequel, Turtles In Time (1991), and very different to more recent games, like 2016’s Mutants in Manhattan.
The game is being developed by Tribute Games; a group made up of former Ubisoft employees and the brains behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game and the 2007 Game Boy Advance brawler, TMNT. It will be published by Nickelodeon alongside Dotemu, which has a reputation for breathing new life to old franchises, as it did with Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. The theme song of the game, based on the original that played alongside each episode of the animated series and became instantly recognizable for those who grew up in the ’90s, will be sung by Faith No More’s Mike Patton.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will be released for all consoles and PC, although a release date has yet to be announced. The steam store has listed the game as “coming soon”, so hopefully, we won’t need to wait too much longer to experience this retro goodness.
