Team Ninja has announced that an open beta for Nioh 2 is coming this November. Starting on November 1st & ending on November 10th, The beta will be available on the PlayStation store.
The prequel to 2017’s “Souls” inspired action game, Nioh 2 was announced at last years Sony’s 2018 E3 conference. As the game is a prequel, players will not reprise the role of the original protagonist, William. Instead, players will be able to create their own character who is said to be half human & half demon. The story of Nioh 2 will tie into that of the original in some way.
Nioh sold well in its first couple of months & was nominated for several awards; winning the rookie award from Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu. As of February 2019, the game has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. Fumihiko Yasuda, one of the directors on Nioh 2, gave an interview back in 2018, telling fans that the prequel would be “a natural evolution, not a dramatic change or deterioration”, So we can expect much of the same, gameplay wise.
In our review of Nioh, we praised its tone & atmosphere, though we were disappointed by its lacklustre story & grinding elements. I look forward to checking out the beta, as it gives all those who haven’t played the original, a chance to try out the challenging gameplay for themselves.
Nioh 2 is set to release in early 2020 for PS4; A port for the PC has yet to be announced. If you haven’t played the original Nioh, you can pick it up on on PlayStation & PC.
