Scorpio Meant to Signal End of Console Generations

Aaron Greenberg, the General Manager of Xbox Games Marketing, came forward in an interview to say that the upcoming Xbox Scorpio console is intended as a major step towards the end of distinct console generations. Greenberg also discussed the Scorpio's capabilities and Microsoft's focus going forward.

Little by little, the games industry appears to be inching closer to ending console cycles. At least, that's the impression given by Aaron Greenberg, GM of Xbox Games Marketing. According to Greenberg, the forthcoming Xbox Scorpio console – promoted as a hardware revision for the Xbox One – has been designed based on Microsoft's belief that "the future is without console generations".

Greenberg emphasized that while Scorpio would not have console-exclusive games, it would be backwards compatible with Xbox One titles and additional hardware. The new console, he claimed, would also allow Microsoft to "be able to do high-fidelity VR".

Expaning on the matter of Microsoft's intentions going forward, Greenberg stated:

"We're focused on a few things. I'd say first we're focused on growing the user base of our games, bringing our games to as many gamers as possible; that's why you see a lot of our big franchises on Windows 10. That allows more gamers than ever before to play titles like Gears of War, Forza Horizon, etc. From a console ecosystem standpoint, we're seeing really healthy console sales and really healthy engagement. "

The Scorpio console was first announced at E3 2016, set to release in 2017.
