The sequel to the critically acclaimed Joker, released in 2019, just got a release date. The release date for Joker 2, titled Folie à Deux, was announced yesterday, expected to hit theaters on the 4th of October of 2024, 2 years and two months ahead of us and exactly five years after the first debut of the film directed by Todd Philips.
Recent news around the movie included the casting of Lady Gaga as the crime queen of Gotham and the Joker’s long-time partner in crime, Harley Quinn. The rumors also had Todd Philips’ intent to make the sequel a musical movie instead of the usual. The alleged shift in the film’s genre had a mixed bag of reception from the worldwide audience of the first movie.
The release date of Joker: Folie à Deux was preceded by Warner Bros cancelling Batgirl after the movie cost them a whopping $90 million and was already finished. The directors of the Batgirl movie expressed their shock and sadness over Warner Bros shelving their film with an Instagram post reading:
Adil El Arbi: We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can’t believe it. As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves. Maybe one day they will insha’Allah.
Becoming the first ever R-rated movie to gross $1 Billion at the box office and being nominated for 11 Nominations, including an Oscar for the best actor, which was claimed by Joaquin Phoenix, Joker had to have a sequel. Especially knowing that the film had a humble budget of $65 million -compared to other superhero movies-. Although the release date was announced, we didn’t get a glimpse of what the movie is actually about. And most likely, we won’t get any details about the plot until we have a trailer.
