Pieces Interactive is developing Alone in the Dark. They wanted to recapture the spirit and quality of the game while updating it for a more modern feel, but as a love letter to the original instead of a remake or reinvention. Though it is not exactly like the original game, the studio has promised to honor it by staying faithful to the atmosphere while expanding on the story and lore.
Though Alone in the Dark could have released this October, the company wanted to avoid competition with Alan Wake 2 and Spiderman‘s epic release. They wanted gamers to be able to enjoy the opportunity to immerse themselves in the upcoming releases. This will also give the developers time to add that extra polish to the game. Thus, Alone in the Dark is rescheduled to release on January 16th, 2024. The game is going to be on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5.
Updated Features
Alone in the Dark will no longer have fixed camera angles. Much like the Resident Evil remakes, the game will feature the over the shoulder, 3rd person perspective. In addition, they’re adding improved controls, enhanced visuals and lighting effects, and revamped animations and sound effects. The creator of the first game, Frédérick Raynal, even gave his approval for the remake. He went on to say that they preserved the core feeling of the original game.
Moreover, if you’re looking to test a small part of the game, there’s currently a free prologue you can play. You’ll be playing as a young girl named Grace, and will explore a small section of Derceto Manor. While it features some of the reworked puzzles, and new graphics, there won’t be combat due to her age. However, it does showcase how terrifying the full game will be as you experience the atmosphere of dread and terror.
The Plot
Set in 1920s Louisiana, players can choose between protagonists Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood. The psychological horror features a noir setting based on the writing of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. Thriving on a delicate balance of tension, it’ll make an immersive experience as you explore, solve puzzles, and defeat enemies.
Emily Hartwood gets the help of the private investigator Edward Carby when her uncle goes missing. When the duo arrives at a home for the mentally ill, Derceto Manor, they’re forced to explore the haunted manor. Coming into contact with strange residents, dangerous monsters, and nightmarish worlds, they must work towards escaping. Along the way, they’ll start uncovering the uneasy truth of the dark manor and uncover a plot of rising evil.
