Tremori serves as an introductory and instructional chapter for Mafia: The Old Country. Here, the player learns more about Enzo’s background while getting acquainted with basic controls and mechanics. The following walkthrough will identify collectibles and points of interest throughout the way.

Tremori translates to "tremor" in English which refers to trembling or shakiness.

Objectives:

Follow Gaetano

‘Tremori’ is the Italian word for “tremor” which means to tremble or shake. In mining contexts, a tremor refers to a localized earthquake or in-ground vibration caused by geological shifts or mining activity. Within Mafia: The Old Country, Enzo demonstrates that it also implies the environment is unstable and dangerous.

Enzo senses danger before he is tasked to follow Gaetano.

Enzo senses danger.

While following Gaetano, there will be normal chatter between friends taking place. As the player ascends to the surface, Gaetano will instruct Enzo to unearth a box under some beams within the rubble. The box holds some cash among other artifacts. The value of these items will come into question later.

The player is tasked with following Gaetano once more and then introduced to the vaulting mechanic (TRIANGLE or ‘Y‘). Players can vault over low walls and other barriers to overcome obstacles along the path.

Enzo will have to vault once or twice before coming across a collectible or “note” that is recorded into the player’s journal. The ‘notes’ appear to be “collectible lore” meant to enhance the story-telling and world-building aspect of Mafia: The Old Country. Enzo reads an ominous note signed by Ruggero Spadardo which will prompt a Journal Entry

Ruggero ‘Don’ Spadardo

Later the player will come across an extremely cruel man that orders the miners to go back to work. This man completely ignores the official notice from Spadardo to seal the lower area for demolition. Whether Enzo realizes or not, the player will later learn that this cruel man is actually Ruggero Spadardo himself.

Mafia: Old Country is a prequel to the Mafia video game series. Like previous installments, the game clearly engages with themes of corruption and exploitation of power. Old Country’s narrative centers around the origins of the Sicilian Mafia.

More ‘following’ and idle conversation will ensue until the player reaches the surface, there will be no more points of interest other than a skippable cutscene. In the clip, players will get a glimpse of Enzo’s tough but good-hearted nature. The backdrop until the surface will be the other miners. Some of the miners that are seen are child workers complaining of the harshness of the environment and the toll it takes on their bodies.

On the surface, the next point of interest would be a mountainous volcano that players will later learn to be Mount Etna in the distance. The scenery is beautiful but ominous as the mountain will be billowing with smoke. The NPC’s can be overheard expressing concern about the smoke with Gaetano encouraging Enzo to say a prayer at the shrine. The altar is dedicated to Saint Barbara and will display another type of collectible found throughout the game.

Pray at the Shrine

Saints’ Cards appear to be unique to Old Country so far. Mafia III had collectible magazines that included the apocalyptic publication ‘Repent’ but that is not what we see here. Interestingly enough, Santa Barbara is a saint who historically is invoked against lightning and flames. She is best known to be the patron saint of army men, miners, and anyone who is vulnerable to ‘sudden death’…namely by explosives.

Enzo will trail behind Gaetano some more and can come across a note fixed upon a wall. The note details a work notice to the miners signed by none other than Ruggero Spadardo.

From there, Gaetano and Enzo will attempt to request for food only to be denied. Gaetano and Enzo will then take matters into their own hands alluding to the fact that they’ve done so many times. This will initiate the player to the stealth and sneak aspect of the gameplay. Crouching or sneak mode is activated by the right joystick, R3 (PS5) or RS (Xbox).

Sneak into Storehouse, Avoid Detection

At this point, the player should be familiar with the stealth mechanic. Next, Enzo should be on to the warehouse where there will be a knife and some more notes. Knives in Old Country will seemingly be very handy in the game with knives playing a historical, cultural, and practical significance in the story. A knife will not only be handy as a weapon but it’ll function as the player’s degradable lockpick as well. Keeping the knife sharpened will prolong the usefulness of every knife.

Gaetano and Enzo will return to the bunkhouse and a bittersweet (skippable) cutscene will ensue. The player is introduced to Don Spadardo for the first time. Up until this point, players have only read notes that reference this harsh character. Spadardo’s nasty demeanor is juxtaposed to the formality of the Notice(s), Invoice, and Board of Director’s Letter that we’ve seen so far.

Search for Missing Miners

From here, without giving away any spoilers, the player will find themselves in danger and will need to escape the mine. At the surface, Enzo confronts II Merlo and the player will have the opportunity to melee with THRUST, DODGE, and STAB actions with the knife they picked up earlier.

Escape, Duel II Merlo

Nobody wins the duel. From here, Enzo escapes on a horse while avoiding gunfire and rides off into the distance. LA FINE (End)

The above guide references gameplay set to Medium difficulty.
