Reverse: 1999 In The Storm Trail Riddle GuideA new era has appeared in Reverse: 1999’s Version 1.4 update, The Prisoner in the Cave, which means a brand new main story chapter for Timekeepers to explore. Chapter 5, also known as The Prisoner in the Cave, is full of all the same weirdness and bizarre happenings that you’ll have seen in the game’s previous four chapters: from quirky characters to the rambling voice inside your head, chapter 5 is the best story we’ve seen yet in Reverse 1999. Another thing that this new chapter has added is many new trails scattered around the Chapter 5 map. These small riddles or questions are there for Timekeepers to deduce and solve, awarding Clear Drop and other rewards for successfully answering.

The first of these new trails in Reverse 1999 Chapter 5 is the In The Storm trail (seen in-game as In The “Storm”) and it asks a simple question: how long has Vertin been walking in the Storm? While the question asked by this trial is relatively simple, it can be difficult to remember on account of the key information being hidden in previous chapters.

Here’s the answer to the In The Storm Trail (“How many years has Vertin been walking in the Storm?”) in Reverse: 1999 Chapter 5.

What Are Trail Riddles in Reverse 1999?

As you go from mission to mission in each of Reverse 1999’s main chapters, you’ll often come across little side activities or stories known as Trails. These manifest on the map as small yellow symbols, with each symbol denoting a different activity: sometimes, the Trails will have you fight a small group of foes to proceed whereas others will ask you to answer a question or hold a dialogue with some strange disembodied voice who seems to know Vertin quite well.

Most of the time, you’ll need to complete a certain set of Trails to progress and unlock more parts of the main story. However, some Trails (like In The Storm) are completely optional meaning that it’s possible to miss the rewards from them. These optional Trails will often reward small amounts of Clear Drop for solving them, with other rewards including more lore and records to add to the Atlas. Trails which have appeared in previous chapters of Reverse 1999 include Fish and Chips, Unexpected Audience, and A Refresher of Essentials.

Some of the riddle-based Trails can be pretty difficult, especially because they require you to dig through previous sections of the story to uncover the answers.

The In The Storm Trail Riddle can be found can be found during the early portions of Chapter 5, The Prisoner in the Cave. To unlock it, you’ll need to progress up to 5TH-05 (or, more simply, stage 5 of Chapter 5) which is known as The Watch Losing Time.

After clearing Stage 5 of Chapter 5, return to the previous stage of the chapter. Once you arrive at Stage 4, Time to Set Sail, huddled around the deck of the ship alongside the other frantic passengers will be a bright yellow Trail symbol. This symbol will be in the shape of a small chess piece, similar to the ones used to depict the game characters on the map.

Once you click on the Trail, you’ll be presented with a question: how many years has Vertin been walking in the “Storm”?

“No one is spared from the scourge of time, yet some still dare to try. How many years has Vertin been walking in the “Storm”?”

Reverse 1999 In the Storm Solution

The answer to the In The Storm Trail is 4 years. When inputting the question, all you need to put is the number 4. If that isn’t working, make sure you don’t have any excess spaces or extra characters as Reverse 1999 is pretty fussy when it comes to spelling and capitalization, although that should be less of an issue with this Trail than with others.

As a reward, you won’t get any Clear Drop, unfortunately, but you will get the ‘Analysis Report on the “Storm” Sample’ lore piece for the Atlas. This piece of lore discusses a scientific report a number of Foundation scientists conducted on a solid piece of the Storm that they managed to stumble across. It also reveals that they may have found a way to protect against its power by removing a specific element from the Storm, potentially hinting at future story events.

In the Storm Trail Solution Explanation

As for how we know the answer is 4 years, it all comes down to Vertin’s age. While Reverse 1999 is cautious to reveal Vertin’s true age directly, we can deduce it from certain clues, mainly those found in Chapter 3, Nouvelles et Textes pour Rien, and Chapter 4, El Oro de los Tigres.

During Chapter 3, which takes place primarily in Vertin’s childhood before she became the Timekeeper, we learn that she is around 12 years old. This is revealed by the Foundation Principal during the main cutscene of 3TH-06, Black Sheep Wall. Then, in 4TH-10, Sailing at Night, Sonetto pays a visit to Matilda where she speaks about the night 4 years ago when she allowed Vertin and the other children out into the storm, reversing almost all of them.

In the current story, Sonetto is 16, as revealed by her Arcanist Bio. Vertin only becomes the Timekeeper following the events at the end of Chapter 3, which is the night described by Sonetto in 4TH-10. As such, we can figure that Vertin is also supposed to be 16 and that she became the Timekeeper 4 years ago, meaning that she has been walking in the Storm alone for 4 years.

That was how to correctly answer the In the Storm Trail Riddle in Reverse 1999 as well as how long Vertin has been walking in the Storm.
