Reverse: 1999’s first proper event has arrived with The Theft of the Rimet Cup. Alongside a new set of event missions and a new 6-star unit in the form of the magnificent master thief Melania, several special event exclusive modes have been added to test your thieving skills. One of these modes is Bio of the Great Thief, a small puzzle activity where you play as Melania as she tries to avoid guards and figure out an escape plan by moving around various objects. There are 10 Great Thief stages for players to complete, all of which award Clear Drop and other useful in-game resources for Re1999.
As with all puzzles, though, some are going to be more difficult than others. Mission 10 of the Bio of the Great Thief is Escape Master and it’s a culmination of everything you’ve learned from the previous 9 levels. This stage is tricky, tough to crack and will leave more than a few Timekeepers completely stumped. Fortunately, we’ve figured out the best way to beat it and are here to show you how to do it yourself.
Here’s how to complete the Escape Master puzzle mission in Reverse: 1999.

How to Start Bio Of The Great Thief
Of course, to reach mission 10 in Bio of the Great Thief, you need to first have started the Great Thief activity. To do so, you’ll need to clear Chapter 1 in Reverse 1999’s main story – which is ‘In Our Time’ – so you can unlock access to The Theft of the Rimet Cup event. This will also let you start the event story which features the master thief Malenia alongside Pickles the telepathic dog and everyone’s favourite British pirate, Regulus.
As soon as you unlock access to the event, you can enter it by clicking on The Theft of the Rimet Cup ticket on the main menu. Then, simply click on the Bio of the Great Thief activity on the left side of the screen to begin your journey in cat burglary. Unlike other parts of the event – such as the Thief of the Thieves activity – you don’t have to have progressed through any of the Theft of the Rimet Cup main campaign to unlock Bio of the Great Thief.
Bio of the Great Thief Availability in R1999
Bio of the Great Thief is a mode tied to The Theft of the Rimet Cup event in Reverse 1999. As such, you may expect that it will be available until the event ends in 27 days on December 7th. However, the main event is split into two phases, with the Bio of the Great Thief and Thief of the Thieves activities (confusing, I know) coming live on November 9th. Meanwhile, on the 23rd of November, two new modes become active, The Puppy & The Hippie as well as Pickle’s Free Translation.
Once the new activities go live in 13 days, Bio of the Great Thief will become unavailable. As such, you have from November 9th to November 23rd to complete all missions in the Bio of the Great Thief activity, including Escape Master, in Reverse 1999. Once the new modes roll in, the rewards available from this event, as well as the stages themselves, will be locked off so act fast.
How to Complete Escape Master in Reverse 1999
At first glance, Escape Master doesn’t seem like the most difficult mission in the Bio of the Great Thief. Compared to some previous stages, there are only a few Guards and the Search Lights seem relatively out of the way. The main issue with this mission, though, is the strange shape of the room and how it will often force you to cross over the Search Lights to get from one side of the room to the other. This can make navigating the Boxes to the Pressure Plates – which are past the Search Lights – a real chore.
Before we dig into how to complete Escape Master, here are some quick refreshers on the main mechanics of the stage. The most important has to be the Search Lights: usually, when spotted by a Guard, you’ll gain 10 Alertness but, step into the path of a Search Light and you’ll instantly gain 100 Alertness, forcing you to restart the stage. Additionally, there’s also a Fan on this level which, when stepped on, will cause the 8 titles surrounding the Fan (as well as the Fan itself) to become shrouded in purple sleeping mist. While the mist is up, you can freely walk through Search Light beams or past Guards on affected tiles without fear of getting caught.
Both of these mechanics are vital to completing Escape Master in Reverse 1999, so keep them in mind.
As for how to complete this stage without failing to either the Guards, the Search Lights or just general mistakes, follow the steps below. You can also consult the images and key for some additional visual guidance.
- Push the bottom Box so it completely covers the left-most Search Light.
- Move the top Box past the guard and then onto the bottom Pressure Plate.
- Then, move the middle Box so it’s directly above the Guard closest to the top of the stage and leave it there.
- Walk down to the Fan and step on it to cover the 9 titles surrounding tiles in purple sleeping mist.
- You must act quickly for the next three steps, as the sleeping mist still needs to be up. Go back up to the Box above the Guard and push it so that it comes to rest on the top Pressure Plate.
- Lastly, push the final remaining Box down towards the Search Light and then to the right over the fan. This will let you slot it onto the middle-Pressure Plate.
- With all Pressure Plates active, the door will open (which is at the very top of the box blocking the left Search Light) and you can exit the stage: you will have to cross a Search Light to escape, but the sleeping mist should still be active, allowing you to safely cross.
Once you pass through those glowing doors, Escape Master will conclude and you’ll have completed all of the Bio Of The Great Thief missions. As your reward, you’ll earn 30 Clear Drop and 10,000 Dust for completing the activity, as well as 3 Moments of Dissonance and 2 Esoteric Bones should you beat it with Alertness below 40.
