Reverse: 1999 | Bells Echoing in the Valley Puzzle Guide (All Level Solutions

The second half of the Journey to Mor Pankh, the flagship event of Reverse: 1999 Version 1.3, is in full swing with new modes for Timekeepers to partake in if they want some sweet Clear Drop and interesting lore. The two new activities centre on Shamane, one of the main characters of the Journey to Mor Pankh’s event story, to coincide with his arrival as a playable unit. We have already written up a guide on Shamane’s Left Arm, a smaller event where you help Shamane repair his prosthetic over several days, but the other is Bells Echoing in the Valley, Shamane’s story event.

Bells Echoing in the Valley is very similar to past Reverse 1999 events such as The Old Teeth and the Worn Marks or The Puppy and The Hippie. In it, you control a chess figurine of a younger Shamane as he tries to grapple with his complicated and tragic past, all the while surviving in the hostile wilderness. There are a total of 8 stages in Bells Echoing in the Valley, each of which you will need to complete unscathed if you want to obtain the maximum amount of rewards. Manage to conquer the wilds and come out on top and you’re looking at over 240 Clear Drop for yourself.

Here’s how to complete all 8 stages in the new Bells Echoing in the Valley mode in Reverse: 1999’s Journey to Mor Pankh event.

All Bells Echoing in the Valley Level Solutions in Reverse 1999

Stage 1: Last Echoes in the Forest

Compared to the previous Reverse 1999, stages in Bells Echoing in the Valley are a bit strange, mainly because they’re split up into two halves, each of which has its own unique layout and obstacles. You will have to control your Shamane chess piece through both of these stages, with completion only occurring once you reach the end of the second half.

These lengthier stages go hand in hand with one of the other significant differences in this event: Shamane’s health. If Shamane runs into an obstacle like a patch of thorns or burning coals, he will take one point of damage and you will only fail the stage when you lose all three lives. However, in a lot of the stages, you must complete both halves Unscathed to get the extra star, meaning that you cannot take any damage if you want the additional rewards from that stage. Stage 1 is one such example.

If you want to obtain the special star for Stage 1 of Bells Echoing in the Valley, you must complete it without taking damage to maintain the Unscathed state

Here’s the route you need to take for Stage 1’s first half:

  1. Up > Right x5 to push the first low rock aside.
  2. Up x2 > Left x3 to move the second low rock out of the way.
  3. Up x2 > Right x3  to break the branch stopping the third and final rock.
  4. With the branch broken, you go Down to push it out of the way, allowing you to reach the exit unharmed.
Stage 1 Part 1

Stage 1 Part 1

Meanwhile, to complete the second part of Last Echoes in the Valley Unscathed, you need to follow this path:

  1. Up > Right x2 > Up to break the first branch blocking the path. Then go Left once to push the low rock out of the way.
  2. Up x3 > Right x3 > Down x3 to move the second rock.
  3. Moving Right then pushes the next low rock out of the way, allowing you to go Down to break the next branch.
  4. From there, go Right x2 > Up x2 > Left to both break the last set of branches and move the final rock, opening up the true exit to Stage 1.
Stage 1 Part 2

Stage 1 Part 2

Stage 2: Reduced to Ashes

Bells Echoing in the Valley’s second stage, Reduced to Ashes, is a special stage mainly dealing with fire. There are only two stages of this kind in the event and both are very story-significant. They also have their own unique obstacles in the form of burning beams and clay vessels, the former of which will act like brambles and the latter of which can be pushed aside, leaving unpassable broken shards in their wake.

To get the star in Stage 2 of Bells Echoing in the Valley, it needs to be completely Unscathed and without taking any form of damage

  1. Left x3 > Down x2 > Right x2 > Down x2 > Left x3 to reach your first set of clay vessels.
  2. From here, you need to break them in a specific order to open a safe path. More specifically, you need to go Down > Right > Down to avoid the broken shards.
  3. Then, go Right x3 to reach the second set of vessels. Clear the way by simply going Up > Right > Up x2.
  4. The final clay vessel blocking your path needs to be pushed into the burning beam nearby, so follow Right > Up > Left to do so. To end, simply follow the path to the exit.
Stage 2 Part 1

Stage 2 Part 2

As for the second half of Stage 2:

  1. Right > Down x6 > Right x5 > Up x2 to reach the first set of clay vessels in the second half of Stage 2.
  2. Go Left once to push the pot into the fire.
  3. Then go Up x2 > Left > Up x2 to move the remaining vessels out of the way.
  4. From there, you can reach the true exit by going Right x3 > Down x3

Stage 2 Part 2

Stage 3: Fangs and Fists

Fangs and Fists, Stage 3, is the next part of Bells Echoing in the Valley and it’s the first stage which introduces enemy Critters. These enemies roam specific parts of the map, causing an instant Game Over if you either run into them or step into their path. The red arrows below their feet tell you which tile they’re stepping onto next.

Unlike Stages 1 and 2, to get the special star in Stage 3 of Bells Echoing in the Valley, you must successfully complete the carbuncle combat encounter within the stone circle

  1. The first thing you need to do is avoid the first Critter while pushing the first set of rocks out of the way. To do this, go Right > Down > Right > Up x2 > Right > Left > Down > Left > Down > Right x2 > Up.
  2. With the path cleared, watch the story event and then go Up > Right > Up > Right > Up x2 > Left > Up to reach the stone circle.
  3. Entering the stone circle will trigger a solo battle with Shamane against a hoard of Carbuncles and, if you want to obtain the star for this stage, you need to beat them.
  4. Once the enemies are dealt with, simply enter the portal to reach the second half of Fangs and Fists.
Stage 3 Part 1

Stage 3 Part 1

To complete the second half of Stage 3 in Bells Echoing in the Valley, follow the directions below:

  1.  Left x 2 > Up x2 to reach the first story section. This will also spawn the roaming wolves who will hunt you for the remainder of the stage.
  2. To escape the wolves, you first need to go Up x2 > Right > Up x2 > Left to push the first rock into the wolves’ path. This will force them to take a longer path.
  3. Then, go Up > Right x3 > Down > Right > Down x2 > Left > Up to push the second rock into place. This time, the rock will completely block the wolf from progressing, allowing you to safely end the mission without worry.
  4. To exit the stage, go Down x2 > Left > Down x2 > Right x2 > Down
Stage 3 Part 2

Stage 3 Part 2

Stage 4: In Humility

The fourth stage of Reverse 1999’s Bells Echoing in the Valley is In Humility, which is, simultaneously, one of the easiest and hardest stages in the event. That’s because the first half is really simple, with very few opportunities to get lost or hurt. Meanwhile, in the second, you have to avoid a number of Critters while collecting all the branches you can which, if you aren’t careful, can put you in danger.

Stage 4’s special star is a return to form because, if you want to obtain the star for In Humility, you will need to clear it without taking damage

  1. Begin by going Right x3 and then back up yourself once by going Left
  2. From here, go up Up x2 > Right > Up x2 > Left x3 > Up x2 > Right x2. This will push all of the rocks out of the way and open a clear path towards the wild flower.
  3. Then, simply retrace your steps back to the Critter and give it the wild flower to open the way to the exit portal.
Stage 4 Part 1

Stage 4 Part 1

As for the second, much trickier part, of Stage 4, here’s how to clear it:

  1. Start by moving Right > Down > Up to avoid the path of the nearest Critter. From there, head Right x4 to avoid the remaining Critters and grab one of the three branches you need.
  2. Next, go Down x2 > Right x2 > Up to reach a story moment.
  3. Then, go Up x4 > Left > Up > Left x2 to grab the ammunition for your slingshot.
  4. After this, retrace your steps by going Right x2 and then push the nearby rock out of the way by going Down x2. This will open the path to the final two branches, which you can obtain by going Left x4 > Up x2.
  5. With all three branches collected and the slingshot made, exit the stage by going Down > Left x2 > Up.
Stage 4 Part 2

Stage 4 Part 2

Stage 5: It Rains the Same Old Rain

It Rains the Same Old Rain is the fifth stage in Bells Echoing in the Valley in Reverse 1999. This stage is where they start combining the roaming enemies and the movable rocks at the same time, asking you to navigate the stages without blocking yourself or boxing yourself into the path of the enemies.

Stage 5’s special star is acquired by completing It Rains the Same Old Rain without getting damaged

  1. The first thing you must do in this stage is to carve a path out of the nearby collection of low rocks. To do this, go Up > Left > Up x3 > Right > Up > Right x3.
  2. Once the last rock is pushed out of the way, you need to break the twigs behind it so you can reach the portal. This means navigating around the nearby Critter. You can do this by going Down x2 > Up > Down > Right x2 > Up x2.
  3. With the branches broken, push the rock aside by going Left and then exit by going Up
Stage 5 Part 1

Stage 5 Part 1

The second half of this stage is a bit trickier, especially because of the larger amount of roaming enemies. To clear it successfully, follow these directions:

  1. Like in the first half, you need to clear a path through a series of low rocks to make it through the beginning bit of the stage. Do this by going Up x2 > Left > Down > Left x2
  2. After passing through the rocks, you’ll arrive at a section with two roaming Critters. Getting around them is kind of tricky, so be sure to follow the instructions. Go Down > Left > Up > Left > Down > Up x2 > Left > Right > Up.
  3. From here, continue going Up until you reach the wall. Then, go Right > Left > Right x4 > Down > Right to manoeuvre around the second set of Critters and escape the stage.
Stage 5 Part 2

Stage 5 Part 2

Stage 6: Friendship with a Fluffball

Friendship with a Fluffball, Bells Echoing in the Valley’s sixth stage in Reverse 1999, is the first where you get access to the friendly Critter. Alongside controlling Shamane, you’re now able to control a little Critter who can stand in deadly brambles unharmed and break twigs in areas Shamane would otherwise be unable to reach. Unfortunately, you will still Game Over if the Critter runs into any enemies, so keep that in mind.

You must escape both halves of Stage 6 Unscathed to obtain the special bonus star in Bells Echoing in the Valley

  1. Begin by going Down x2 > Left x3 > Down x2 > Up > Down x2 > Right > Down > Right > Up x2 > Left. This path will let you navigate the field of hostile Critter without being damaged.
  2. Then, go Up to push the low rock out of the way and meet up with the friendly Critter.
  3. From here, go Right > Up > Right > Up > Right > Down x4 > Left x2 > Down x2 > Right x2. Following this path will let you get through the second set of rocks unharmed and make it to the exit portal.
Stage 6 Part 1

Stage 6 Part 1

To clear the second half of stage 6, you need to enlist the help of your Critter friend:

  1. The first character you’ll be controlling is the Critter. From its starting location, go Left x3 > Up > Right > Left > Up x4. This path will let the friendly Critter avoid the hostile Critters without being caught.
  2. Next, move the Critter Left x4 > Down > Up > Left > Right x3 > Up > Right x2 > Down to break all the branches in the level.
  3. To finish, move the Critter Right once to get it out of the way.
  4. Now you can regain control of Shamane. With him, you need to go Up x2 > Right x2 > Up x3 > Left > Up > Left to pick up a piece of flintstone.
  5. Then, Shamane needs to go Right > Down > Right x4 > Up > Right x2 to exit the stage.

Stage 7: At the End of the Forest

Stage 7 of Bells Echoing in the Valley in Reverse 1999 is easily the most complex and difficult stage of them all. Not only is this area covered in traps, obstacles and enemies, but you also have to control both Shamane and the Critter to fully effect. Both halves of the stage are relatively difficult so expect some trial and error.

To add to the confusion, the special star for stage 7 isn’t earned from completing the stage Unscathed. Instead, you need to interact with three stone tablets which are scattered around the map, with two in the first half and one in the second half

  1. Begin Stage 7 by controlling the Critter and go Up x2 > Right > Left > Right x3 to escape the hostile Carbuncle’s path.
  2. Then, go Down x3 to break the branch behind the rock on Shamane’s side. Finish this part of the Critter’s turn by retracing your steps and going Up x3
  3. Next, switch control to Shamane. Firstly, evade the hostile Critter by going Down x2 > Right > Left > Right x3.
  4. This will then allow you to push the nearby rock out of the way by going Up x3, unblocking the first stone tablet. Following this, go Right x2 > Up x3 > Right to unblock the path for the friendly Critter.
  5. Now, go back to controlling the Critter and go Down > Right x2 > Down x6 > Right x2 > Up > Down > Left. This will let you cross the brambles at the bottom of the map and break the branches blocking the second tablet.
  6. Finally, go back to controlling Shamane and go Left > Down x3 > Right x2 > Down x2 > Left to reach the second tablet.
  7. To finish off, take Shamane Up x3 to exit this half of the stage.

If you thought the first half was confusing, then the second half will be even more tricky. To clear it efficiently, follow the steps below:

  1. Begin by controlling the Critter once again and use its ability to cross brambles by going Up > Right x2 > Down x2 > Right x4 > Up x4 > Left x2 and break the branch at the top of the map.
  2. After that, retrace your steps and make it to the branch at the bottom of the map by going Right x2 > Down x4 > Left x4 > Down > Left > Down > Left.
  3. Unfortunately, this set of actions means that the Critter is stuck. To remedy this, switch to Shamane and move him Up once. This will move the hostile Critter along one tile, freeing the friendly Critter.
  4. From there, switch back to controlling the friendly Critter and go Right x2 > Up x2 > Right to place it safely in a patch of brambles.
  5. The rest of the stage involves using Shamane.  From his new position, go Down x2 > Right > Down > Right > Up x6 > Right x3 > Down > Left > Down x3 > Right x3 > Up x2. This will take you to the final stone tablet.
  6. With all the tablets collected, simply exit the stage and earn your extra star in At the End of the Forest

Stage 8: Dimming Embers

The last stage in Bells Echoing in the Valley is Stage 8, Dimming Embers and, as the name suggests, it’s a return to the fiery theme from Stage 2. Despite being the last stage, Dimming Embers is actually pretty easy, especially if you remember how to exploit the clay vessels from earlier stages.

To finish stage 8 of Bells Echoing in the Valley with a star, you must complete it without taking damage to maintain the Unscathed status.

  1. Start by heading Right x4 > Down x2 > Left x3 > Down > Left > Down x2 to reach the first set of clay vessels.
  2. To safely clear the path forward, go Right > Up. This will push both pots aside.
  3. From there, head Right x3 > Up > Right x3 to break through the final two vessels and reach the end portal.
Stage 8 Part 1

Stage 8 Part 1

Lastly, we come to the final stage of Bells Echoing in the Valley. To clear it while keeping your Unscathed ranking intact, follow these instructions:

  1. Begin by going Right > Down > Right x2 to reach the wall of clay vessels.
  2. To carve a safe path through the vessels, go Up > Right > Down > Right > Up > Right > Up x3.
  3. After encountering the final bit of story for Shamane, simply head to the exit by going Left x6
Stage 8 Part 2

Stage 8 Part 2

That was how to compete all 8 stages in the new Bells Echoing in the Valley event, along with their associated special stars, in Reverse 1999 Version 1.3.
