Chapter IV of Mafia: The Old Country, titled Il Barone (The Baron), introduces Baron Fontanella, an Italian aristocrat based in Valle Dorata. While he and Torrisi meet to take care of business, Isabella is left in the company of Il Barone’s son Gerrano with Cesare and Enzo as chaperone. The following provides a detailed walkthrough, collectibles, and other points of interest of Il Barone, Chapter IV.
Get a Horse from the Stables
Follow Isabella to the stables. There will be idle chatter while she leads Enzo to choose a horse. Further, the player will be introduced to STABLES.

Visit a STABLE to access your collection of horses. You can also spend Dinari at a Stable to purchase horses and accessories.
Each horse appears to have their own attributes. The player may choose the one they like the best based off the description as the ride to the ruins will be fairly basic. On the way to the temple, Isabella and Enzo have a conversation about her future.
Main Conversation Points with Isabella
- Don keeps a watchful eye on Isabella
- Torrisi wishes Isabella to marry Il Barone’s son Gerrano
- Isabella used to visit the ruins with her mother
- Isabella expressed interest in studying on the Mainland but was ‘discouraged’ by Torrisi
The conversation does not go beyond her father before being sidetracked by Cesare. Enzo is volunteered to CRANK Geranno’s engine.

A similar theme of conversation will continue before she challenges Enzo to a race.
- Use SPUR through the bend as the road turns to gain some head
- Isabella trailing behind…
Continue to ride to ruins – the player may have to get behind her to prompt her to take the lead.

Isabella will lead Enzo to an overpass to take a photo where the player will be introduced to the concept of PHOTOGRAPHY
Take a Photo
You can use the CAMERA to take photographs at beauty spots around the Valle Dorata. Every photograph you take will be added to your COLLECTION.
Adjust the focus and exposure until the image is clear and the indicators turn YELLOW
Cesare will dare Enzo to take Genarro’s car for a joyride. Here the player gets a feel for an upcoming Free Ride mode via update on the house from the game developers. The player will be prompted to do two laps before running into bandits.
- “Those pillars with ribbons mark out the track.”
- Hold the RIGHT TRIGGER to accelerate Hold LEFT TRIGGER to brake
Defeat the Bandits, Get to Isabella
If playing at a higher difficulty, it may seem natural to try to do a full frontal assault. However, sneaking can help the player gain a tactical advantage while saving ammo. Loot bodies as you go, when it’s safe.
Now is a good time to equip the LUPARA medallion which improves your firing and reloading speeds. If not, the SANT’AGATA charm which blesses the player with a period of invulnerability when close to death – if going guns blazing.
On the upper level, there will be a TRINACRIA which may prompt a player achievement trophy.
- Crouch to avoid gunfire
- TRINACRIA, upper level on a table, near some barrels
Pursue the Bandits, Save Isabella
A cutscene will play where Isabella and Gerrano are kidnapped by a man named Messina. Pursue Isabella first by car, then horseback. The chase lasts about 6½ minutes until another cutscene will play.
A good CHARM for this segment is the Velocita charm which improves handling, suspension, and damage resistance in vehicles.
- Pursue the bandits on vehicle
- Press LEFT BUMPER to shoot
Isabella and Enzo share their first kiss in the scene before he volunteers to go after the Messina bandits.
After the cutscene ends, immediately to Enzo’s right is a Charm, the Fantasma. This CHARM dampens the sound of your footsteps improving the player’s sneaking mechanisms. Now is a good time to equip the Fantasma while you search for Gennaro.

The Fantasma. This CHARM dampens the sound of your footsteps improving the player’s sneaking mechanisms.
Find Gennaro
The next objective is to find Gennaro within the Messina camp. Activate instinct to see around corners while also using coins or bottles to distract enemies.
- Use INSTINCT to orient yourself and plan TAKEDOWNS
- Equip COINS or pickup BOTTLES to distract enemies
An easy route is to take out the surrounding bandits before taking down the two bandits near the center campfire, distract them to kill one by one (or shoot them both to activate a shootout with the rest of the bandits).
A point of interest will be a conversation overheard about the Il Barone being in debt. Another nearby, is a note that will prompt a Journal Entry depicting rumor from a character named “The Owl”. Also nearby, is a Lupara gun. There is a specific medallion CHARM for this particular weapon. Killing 20 enemies with this gun also activates a player achievement trophy.
- Journal Entry location, Messina Camp, near first campfire
- To the right of Enzo, a Lupara can be equipped after looting the bandit (Takedown first)
If anybody shoots their gun, it will alert more bandits waiting above. There will be many bodies to loot so having the Fortunato bead CHARM equipped will guarantee more Dinari when looting.
Look out for a Newspaper as well as a Mystery Fox along the way.
- Newspaper Location inside the Messina Camp
- Mystery Fox location on the path above the Messina Camp
Once all the bandits have been eliminated, the dramatic music will come down to a simmer with a prompt to Untie Gennaro.
Across from Il Barone’s son will be a San Guida CHARM, a medallion that ensures weapons looted will always be full of ammo. To Gennaro’s left will be a ransom note that prompts a Journal Entry.
Once Gennaro is untied, Enzo have to escort him back to the Il Barone. Just before leaving, a cutscene ensues where Enzo challenges Messina to a DUEL.
How to Kill Messina, Boss Fight
- Enzo challenges Messina to a DUEL
- PARRY was used instead of DODGE…player will take damage in this instance When the opponents blade shines RED, DODGE
- Use THRUST or SLASH after PARRY
- After DODGE quickly use THRUST or SLASH
- Use STRIKE when opponent is in a blocking stance
- Successful PARRY
A final cutscene ends the chapter with the player receiving the “A Trip to the Coast” trophy.
