Enshrouded is a brand-new open-world survival game filled with secrets to find, bases to build and battles to win. With such an expansive open world to explore and master, Keen Games was sure to include several satisfying traversal options which will make moving through the world a breeze. The two main items you’ll want to get your hands on as soon as possible are the Glider and the Grappling Hook, two tools which will make your life in Enshrouded much easier.
The Glider is, as the name suggests, a way for you to navigate the skies, allowing players to coast through the air and descend from the tallest mountains safely. Meanwhile, the Grappling Hook functions like a mini-Hook Shot, giving Flameborn access to new routes or areas they were previously locked out from with just their normal tools. Both of these traversal items are essential to getting the most out of Enshrouded so we’re here to show you how to get both of them very easily early on in the game.
Here’s how to make the Glider and the Grappling Hook early on in Enshrouded.

How to Get the Glider Early in Enshrouded
The first traversal item we’ll be going after in this guide is the Glider. Gliders are a type of item that you can equip to your character which gives them the ability to, well, glide. If you double press the jump button while falling, you will pull out the Glider and begin coasting along the breeze. This item is insanely useful for getting around Enshrouded’s world quickly and efficiently.
This first version of the Glider is a bit unwieldy, though. There are better versions of the Glider – specifically, the Advanced Glider and the Extraordinary Glider – but those will become available much later in the game.
There are four main materials that you’ll need to craft the Glider:
- 8 pieces of Shroud Wood
- 2 bits of Animal Fur
- 2 pieces of String
- 2 Shroud Spores
Additionally, you won’t be able to craft your Glider on the fly using Manual Crafting, even if you have the resources. Instead, you’ll have to make a Workbench, first, and use that to make your Glider. To build a Workbench, you’ll require 3 pieces of String and 8 Wood Logs. Additionally, it can only be placed inside the area dictated by a Flame Altar, so you are limited in when and where you can put it.
Shroud Wood Location
The first item on the list is Shroud Wood, a strange material which only drops from harvesting certain trees from within the Shroud, the fog which encompasses most of Enshrouded’s land. In total, you’ll need 8 pieces of Shroud Wood to make your Glider, which will require you to hack away at more than a few trees. As such, we recommend making yourself an Axe beforehand to make the process much quicker and simpler.
With your Axe in hand, venture into the first main area of the Shroud underneath Braelyn Bridge. After coming down the slope into the fog, turn right and continue down the path, keeping your eyes on sloping hills to your sides at all times. Shortly after, you’ll across a small grove of withered, dead trees to your right.
These are Shroud Trees which, when damaged, have a chance to award you with pieces of Shroud Wood. If you’re using an Axe like we recommended, each tree should give you about 4-6 Shroud Wood before it breaks, meaning that you’ll need to excavate roughly two or three Shroud Trees to get the materials you need. Just don’t dilly dally as you’ll only have 5 minutes of safe time within the Shroud before your Shroud Protection depletes: should it vanish entirely, you will die and all the wood you’ve collected will have to be gathered from your corpse.

Animal Fur Location
The Shroud Wood was easily the most difficult material to find, as the other three are likely things you’ve already obtained or stumbled across, with the first being Animal Fur. There are lots of different animals in Enshrouded but killing most will simply award you with Bones or Meat. The ones most likely to give you Animal Fur early on are the goats.
Goats are docile creatures who mainly graze in areas of abundant grasslands, so you should have more than a few roaming around your first camp. However, goats are passive and easily scared, running away from you if you attempt to draw near. If hunting down these animals is your goal, we recommend making a Bow so that you can hit them from a distance and avoid spooking them. One goat should provide enough Animal Fur to make your Glider.
Other animals which can be harvested for Animal Fur are wolves. Wolves are aggressive creatures, instantly attacking you when you get near them. They also spawn pretty much everywhere, giving you ample opportunities to hunt them down for your Glider. However, they have a much higher chance of giving you Bones or fresh meat when you kill them, so don’t be surprised if you have to go through a few wolves before you get the Fur you need.
String Location
The other abundant material your Glider needs is String. While it is possible to find completed pieces of String out in the world, such as in chests, it’s far easier to make it yourself using Plant Fibers.
To create one piece of String, you will need 3 Plant Fibers, which come from harvesting tall bushes out in the wild. These bushes are different from the berry bushes, which are covered in thick purple berries and will give you Twigs or a few pieces of Plant Fiber when harvested. You can find a lot of these bushes around the edge of your first camp, so pull on your wellies and stomp out into the wilderness.
Harvesting plants in this manner generally gives around 2 to 3 Plant Fibers per bush, so you’ll have to pluck at least a few bushes to get the 6 Plant Fibers you need to make 2 pieces of String.

Shroud Spore Location
The last main material you’ll need for your Glider is Shroud Spores. As the name implies, this material drops exclusively from enemies who have been tainted and corrupted by the Shroud. Usually, defeated opponents from the Shroud will drop between 1 or 2 Shroud Spores, meaning that you’ll only need to find a couple of them to get enough Spores for your Glider.
The best place to look for these enemies early on is Longkeep, a crumbling bastion which sits right next to your first campsite. There are several areas of dense fog which have rolled over different parts of Longkeep, drawing in those whom the Shroud has changed. Taking on these enemies here is a lot safer than venturing into the Shroud as you’re right next to your base.
How to Get the Grappling Hook Early in Enshrouded
Alongside the Glider, the other main traversal tool you’ll need to fully explore Enshrouded is the Grappling Hook. Around the world, you’ll find small silver buckles on certain objects such as cranes or ledges, which you can hook onto using the Grappling Hook. There are a lot of areas which are locked off to you until you get the Grappling Hook, so getting one should be your main aim early on in Enshrouded.
In order to craft the Grappling Hook, there are several important materials you’ll need to collect:
- 4 Metal Scraps
- 7 Pieces of String
- 10 Shroud Spores
Furthermore, just like with the Glider, you can only make the Grappling Hook on a Workbench. The Grappling Hook requires a lot more materials than the Glider, meaning that the risk of losing those materials on death is also much higher. As such, consider making some sort of chest or storage item back at your camp that you can safely store your resources in. There’s nothing worse than losing a bunch of progress because you died far out in the Shroud.
Metal Scrap Location
The trickiest materials to obtain are the Metal Scraps. These can usually only be found in areas of human work, such as in Scavenger Camps or on the bodies of Scavengers themselves. Metal Scraps are mainly used to make things like Nails and Lockpicks, but you’ll need a total of 4 pieces to make the Grappling Hook.
If you want to gather a surplus of Metal Scraps early on in Enshrouded, your best bet is to head to Rookmore, a small Scavenger settlement just west of Braelyn Bridge. This place is swarming with Scavengers so come prepared with weapons and shields to take them down. However, if you’re willing to brave the storm and take down at least a few enemies, you’ll be awarded a plentiful amount of Metal Scraps from the Scavenger’s bodies.

String and Shroud Spores
String and Shroud Spores are two materials which are shared by the Glider and the Grappling. However, the Grappling Hook needs significantly more of each material than the Glider, forcing you to be a bit more creative when it comes to finding the resources you need.
When it comes to gathering more String, the Plant Fiber is still king, you’ll just have to venture out slightly farther than you would’ve needed to with the Glider. The Grappling Hook asks for a total of 7 pieces of String, which is about 21 Plant Fibers. That may seem like a lot but, once you’re used to finding the bushes out in the wild, you should come across that amount relatively quickly.
As for the Shroud Spores, you’ll need 10 of them to make the Grappling Hook, a massive jump from the 2 required to make Glider. With such a big increase, you’ll likely want to head directly into the Shroud itself rather than picking off stragglers within Longkeep or the surrounding area.
If getting as many Spores as quickly as possible is your goal, we recommend heading to the nearby Elixir Well, a monument of human achievement which has been overtaken by the Shroud. These areas are full of enemies, all of whom will instantly aggro onto you and try and kill you. However, with this danger comes the promise of great rewards should you manage to beat them. Just be cautious of the 5-minute timer you have: Elixir Wells do have areas which replenish your Shroud Protection but always keep an eye on that timer to ensure that you don’t white out.
That was how to easily craft both the Glider and the Grappling Hook early on in Enshrouded.
