Football Manager 2024 is the most detailed and enthralling footie (or soccer) management simulator game. Yet, it also seems pretty complicated at first and can be quite intimidating for players new to the managerial ballgame. The game includes an almost bewildering array of options and features for tactics, training, and training to become acquainted with. However, with some playing persistence, you can take your place among the managerial greats. Here are some Football Manager 2024 tips for beginners starting in the game.
Sign Players for Free!
You can sign many quality players for free when their contracts have expired or are close to expiration. Signing players with free transfers is great for business because you can sell them on for big profits. Doing this will increase your club’s overall financial balance, boosting your transfer budget for signing players. So, keep an eye out for decent players with contracts that are close to expiring or have expired that you can feasibly snap up for free.
Trim Your Squad Down
An overly large senior squad is not a good thing for any footie manager to deal with. Sure, having more players may give you more options, but it also makes it somewhat harder to give everyone adequate playing time. More players will likely complain about not being given satisfactory playing time in a big squad, lowering morale.
A big squad also strains your club’s budget. The more players you have, the higher your club’s payroll bill. Having too many players can make your club unprofitable, which will reduce your overall transfer budget.
Get rid of players you don’t need that much to keep your squad size down. An
optimal size for a senior squad is about 22-25 players. Such a squad consists of 11 first-choice players and another 11-14 backup choices. You must have two players who can play in each position of your formation.
Give Your Kids a Chance by Loaning Them
Investing in younger players (18-22) is a prudent strategy in Football Manager 2024. They’re usually cheaper to sign and have attribute ratings that can considerably increase in future years. Most younger players will usually get better, enabling you to sell them at higher transfer fees than you paid when they are older.
The best way to give your kids a chance without regularly selecting them for your team is to loan them to other clubs. One season of regular football on loan at another club can considerably increase the attribute ratings of a younger player. Loaning your best kids will give them invaluable playing experience and get them ready for senior team action sooner rather than later.
Keep an Eye on Morale
Morale can have a big impact on players’ performances. Different variables can impact players’ morale, which you can keep an eye on via the Dynamics tab. Select Dynamics > Happiness to view the morale of all players. Try to ‘cheer up’ players with low morale in your squad by giving them more playing time, adjusting training, or having a few words regarding contracts, etc.
Be Careful of Minimum Release Clauses
Minimum release clauses can be an annoyance because you lose some control over player sales for those contracts that include them. Nothing is more annoying than losing a regular first-time player you don’t want to sell because of a minimum release clause in his contract. Try to remove minimum release clauses in contracts when signing players to avoid unwanted sales. If the player insists on keeping such a clause in his contract, increase the value of the minimum fee.
Check Players’ Conditions for Match Selection
The condition of players is another important factor for their performances. Players seldom play as well as they can when they’re tired. It’s best to select players with maximum green hearts that are fully match fit. Always check the conditions of players when selecting teams by moving the cursor over the green heart symbols. If a first-choice player is tired, consider resting him and selecting your fresh backup option.
This is where squad rotation comes into play. Try to keep your best players fresh for matches against the toughest teams and for the most important games. You can usually rely on your backup players to do the business against poorer teams in leagues. However, cup matches against lower-division sides are the safest games to rest first-choice players.
Compare Players With the Comparison Tool
The player comparison tool in Football Manager 2024 is an invaluable utility for comparing player attributes. That tool directly compares one player’s attributes to another, which is extremely useful for identifying which player has the best general attribute ratings. That tool also compares player ratings for different positions. Utilizing this tool will help you make both better signings and player selections for particular positions.
To utilize that tool, click Comparison on a player’s attribute screen. Select Compare With to choose another player for comparison. Click Attributes to view the attribute comparison shown in the snapshot directly below.
Set Players to Train For Specific Position Roles
Setting players to train for specific position roles in your team will improve their familiarity with your chosen tactical formation. Doing this will also focus their training on the most important attributes of their playing roles. To train a player for a specific role, right-click his name to select Training > Position/Role/Duty and the role he plays.
Let Your Staff Do More Work
When I first started playing Football Manager 2024, I thought it took a bit too long to play. However, you can make the game quicker by delegating more responsibilities to your staff. To do that, click Staff and select Responsibilities. You can then select to delegate more responsibilities you’re not sure about to staff. However, make sure you’re still handling the most important things regarding transfers, team selection, and individual training.
