15. Until Dawn
Director | David F Sandberg |
Main Cast | Ella Rubin, Odessa A’zion, Michael Cimino |
Duration | 103 minutes |
Synopsis
A group of friends travel to a valley in hopes of finding answers to the disappearance of a friend. There, they get stuck in a time loop where they are murdered and are only able to escape if they can survive until dawn.
Overview
Until Dawn is not the best movie on this list, but it’s still a fun Saturday night flick to watch. It’s based off the video game of the same name but don’t worry, for better and for worse, it draws little inspiration from it. You won’t care much about the characters but you will entertained by the various entities trying to kill them.
14. In The Tall Grass
Director | Vincenzo Natali |
Main Cast | Laysla De Oliveira, Avery Whitted, Patrick Wilson |
Duration | 101 mins |
Synopsis
A brother and sister enter a field of very tall grass after hearing a young boy calling for help, only to realize they have no way out and nothing is at it seems.
Overview
I personally think this film is underrated. In The Tall Grass is based on a novella by Stephen King and features some weird twisty moments throughout. It’s a film that ups the creep factor with its audio. People are not always where they think, and that damn grass blowing in the wind gets to you. If you’re a fan of horror with some mystery in it, I’d definitely check this out.
13. 47 Meters Down
Director | Johannes Robert |
Main Cast | Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Matthew Modine |
Duration | 89 minutes |
Synopsis
Two sisters travel down to Mexico for vacation and end up taking an excursion to dive in shark infested waters. Their cage breaks free from the boat, where sharks loom and their oxygen slowly starts to dwindle.
Overview
If you are afraid of shark movies, 47 Meters Down will have you hiding behind your blankets. It’s incredibly tense and suspenseful watching these two sisters have to figure out how they’re going to get out of this situation while sharks are circling them. If you’re afraid of the water, you might want to keep away.
12. Escape Room
Director | Adam Robitel |
Main Cast | Taylor Russel, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis |
Duration | 99 minutes |
Synopsis
Six strangers enter a mysterious building in hopes of completing an escape room to earn money…only to find out not making it out alive means certain death.
Overview
So, Escape Room isn’t exactly a scary movie per say, although there are horrifying deaths in it. That being said, what it lacks for horror, it makes up for in suspense. You do have to suspend disbelief for a majority of the film, but it’s incredibly engaging to see these strangers figure out the answers to the puzzles that are displayed in front of them.
11. His House
Director | Remi Weekes |
Main Cast | Sope Dirisu, Wunmi Mosaku |
Duration | 93 minutes |
Synopsis
Barely escaping war-torn South Sudan, two asylum seekers attempt to get accustomed to their new home in England, but their past soon comes back to haunt them.
Overview
His House has an incredibly engrossing story about this couple you can’t help but want the best for. They are traumatized by their past and what they had to live through. It is a story with themes surrounding guilt, loss, and trauma while being served as a haunted house film. I was frustrated by their experience and only wanted them to be able to live at ease, something that was difficult to do when they had visitors as night!
10. The Strangers
Director | Bryan Bertino |
Main Cast | Scott Speedman, Liv Tyler, Gemma Ward |
Duration | 96 minutes |
This is the type of movie that will have you being on extra alert when renting that cabin far from home
Synopsis
James and Kristen stay at a vacation home when masked assailants arrive, terrorizing their nigh t.
Overview
This 2008 film is the original Strangers film. The franchise has had a hard time recently recapturing the magic of this film. It’s a relatively straightforward film that entertains even to this day. That’s because it’s premise is simple, yet effective, and honestly something we all have a fear of whenever visit a cabin far away from home. More stressful than scary on watch, but you’ll remember it again on your trip away.
9. BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE
Director | Tim Burton |
Main Cast | Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara |
Duration | 105 minutes |
Synopsis
Lydia’s nonbelieving daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens up a portal to the afterlife. Beetlejuice is brought back once again, unleashing mayhem, and maybe helping save Astrid in the process.
Overview
Director Tim Burton is back at the helm once again. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and the rest of the gang make a return in BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE. This was an incredibly fun film to watch. It’s not going to be the scariest film on this list for sure, but the halloween theme of the town they reside in and the spooky underworld they traverse make this a fantastic horror film.
8. Incantation
Director | Kevin Ko |
Main Cast | Hsuan-yen Tsai, Sin-Ting Huang |
Duration | 110 minutes |
Synopsis
A mother who recently gained custody of her daughter begins to experience paranormal events due to her breaking a religious taboo years ago.
Overview
Incantation is labeled as a found footage film, but I felt as though everything was too clean and perfectly shot on camera. That being said, there are a couple of scenes where the camera angles offer some creepy imagery. The film goes back and forth from when the mother gains custody of her child and the experiences in her home, and back in the past when she worked as a part of a ghostbusting crew for their video channel. Although a bit longer than the typical horror film, Incantation moves quickly as we jump from one dark and unsetting setting to another.
7. Heart Eyes
Director | Josh Ruben |
Main Cast | Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, Olivia Holt |
Duration | 90 minutes |
Synopsis
A serial killer known as the “Heart Eyes Killer” who strikes on Valentine’s Day is back again this year, and no couple is safe.
Overview
If you’re in the mood for some romance in your horror, then look no further than Heart Eyes. This slasher flick is full of fun and thrilling moments. It still plays into some of the cliches of slasher films…if you know, then you know, but it’s nonetheless a great time with likeable characters. It’s a great film to watch with popcorn and laugh at some of the funny moments while hiding behind your sheet some of the more tense ones. It’s even better with a date!
6. Train To Busan
Director | Yeon Sang-ho |
Main Cast | Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok |
Duration | 118 minutes |
Synopsis
While a zombie virus breaks out in Korea, passengers on a train from Seoul to Busan fight for their lives.
Overview
Train to Busan is easily my favorite zombie movie because of how scary the zombies are and because of the unique situation of the zombie outbreak. Passengers are on a train and have to travel from one location to another. Some people on the train are not truthful. And when they stop at a location, are those locations safe? Additionally, the characters in this film are fantastic. You don’t initially like everyone at the start but they start to grow on you as time goes on. You want them all to survive the horrors. The scenes with the zombies are so incredibly tense and exciting. If you like this movie, the sequel is also available but not nearly as good.
5. Veronica
Director | Paco Plaza |
Main Cast | Sandra Escacena, Bruna González, Claudia Placer, Ivan Chavero |
Duration | 105 minutes |
Synopsis
Veronica and her siblings are haunted by a demonic spirit after she plays with a Ouija board. It’s now up to Veronica to protect her brother and sisters.
Overview
Another Ouija board movie is Veronica. I liked that the children here aren’t annoying like they sometimes can be in horror movies. They’re innocent and supportive of their sister as she is the one who primarily cares for them. As a result, Veronica is terrifying, not just because we are scared of the demon, but because we’re also afraid of what could potentially happen to this family.
4. Fear Street Trilogy
Director | Leigh Janiak |
Main Cast | Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Sadie Sink, Benjamin Flores Jr, Ashley Zukerman |
Duration | 107 mins (Part 1) 109 mins (Part 2) 114 mins (Part 3) |
Synopsis
Fear Street on Netflix is a trilogy of horror movies that only works well when all watched together. Each film takes place during different time periods with different characters, all trying to survive a serial killing evil.
Overview
I sort of cheated here as this involves three films, but these films work as one piece. The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix starts in the present day and works its way back to explain events occurring in Shadyside. I love that it feels like a series in a way. The R rating goes a long way to help these films out as well. I think if it was PG-13, it could have felt a little too soap opera-y and not have been able to deliver those genuinely brutal kills. If you skipped these films thinking they’re more for teenagers, I’d highly recommend checking them out. There is a new fear street film that released titled “Prom Queen.” You can go ahead and skip that one.
3. Smile
Director | Parker Finn |
Main Cast | Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner |
Duration | 115 minutes |
Synopsis
A psychiatrist that witnessed a horrifying and traumatic incident, begins to witness disturbing smiles, fearing that she may end up like her patient.
Overview
Smile is absolutely fantastic and if you haven’t seen this horror film yet, please do so immediately. I was surprised by how scary and uneasy the film was. I personally like the sequel, Smile 2, even more, but there are many that still claim Smile to be the better film. Unfortunately, only the first film is currently on Netflix, but I’d highly recommend watching and seeking out the sequel if this managed to impress you. The second one recently ranked on a list of one of the scariest movies of all time. You will enjoy the horror sequel more though if you watch the first now streaming on Netflix.
2. Host
Director | Rob Savage |
Main Cast | Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb |
Duration | 57 minutes |
Synopsis
A group of friends hire a medium to perform to seance when things go horribly wrong.
Overview
Host was for a long time, only available on the horror streaming platform, Shudder. I’m not sure how long it will be on Netflix, but if you don’t have Shudder, I would highly recommend watching this before it inevitably leaves. It’s perhaps my favorite found footage film, taking place entirely over a Zoom call. I loved the perspective and how fast things go dark. It’s incredibly scary and fun to watch. The worst part about this movie is that it’s only 57 minutes, but that is also one of its greatest strengths.
1. The Ritual
Director | David Bruckner |
Main Cast | Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Rober James-Collier, Sam Troughton, Paul Reid |
Duration | 94 mins |
Synopsis
A group of friends head out on a hike in Europe, but when one of their friends is injured, they attempt to take a shortcut through a forest where an evil entity stalks them.
Overview
I’m not sure what it is about horror movies and forests that gives me the chills. It might be the fact that no one lives in them, so seeing anyone there wandering at night leads one to think they have bad intentions. That feeling of isolation and confusion as people attempt to navigate land that doesn’t have easily distinguishable paths always makes for great scares and The Ritual is no exception. What makes this horror movie work so well however is how great the cast is. The group have a great backstory that continuously comes into play as they grow angrier and more desperate. Having that psychological element helps elevate this film further.
