5. Night of the Reaper (Shudder)
Release Date | September 19th |
Director | Brandon Christenson |
Main Cast | Jessica Clement, Ryan Robbins, Summer H. Howell |
Duration | 93 minutes |
Synopsis
Deena is persuaded to take a babysitting gig for a weekend, but an evil lurks in her town where a brutal murder of a babysitter recently took place. The local sheriff finds evidence that the killer may not be done.
Overview
Shudder is releasing Night of the Reaper right before October and it’s giving Halloween vibes. Director Brandon Christenson has directed several indie horror films such as Z, and Host, both of which thoroughly enjoyed. One aspect that I enjoyed from both films were the characters, the often forgotten piece of horror filmmaking. I trust we’ll have strong ones in this film. As for what we can expect in this film, it looks to be a fun and scary ride from what we can see in the trailers.
4. Him
Release Date | September 19th |
Director | Justin Tipping |
Main Cast | Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans, Julia Fox |
Duration | 96 minutes |
Synopsis
A young athlete goes to train under a legendary champion, when his world starts to descend into terror.
Overview
If anyone tells you they know how Him is going to go or what exactly it is, they are lying. This is one of those films where I’m incredibly confused but completely entertained by. I don’t know what to expect from this movie or how “scary” it will be, but I’m sure the “twist” will be revealed early on in the movie and we’ll be happy that the trailer didn’t give anything away. Jordan Peele’s producing company is producing the film which means they saw something valuable here. We’ll find out what that is soon enough.
3. The Strangers – Chapter 2
Release Date | September 26th |
Director | Renny Harlin |
Main Cast | Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath |
Duration | 96 minutes |
Synopsis
Having survived in The Strangers Chapter 1, Maya is on the run, as The Strangers are made aware that she is alive and begin to hunt her down.
Overview
Yes, I know. Not many people enjoyed the previous The Strangers film. And yes, this is the same director. But listen, this is a different direction! I’m not sure if that will make The Strangers -Chapter 2 more liked than the first film, but I’m sure many will be interested in this new approach that doesn’t involve two characters hopelessly fending off masked terrorists in a secluded cabin. Many fans disliked The Strangers – Chapter 1 because it was remake of the original 2008 film. But now, the story continues in a different direction. This will be a trilogy where the films were apparently shot simultaneously. Let’s hope The Strangers – Chapter 2 lands, because either way, we’re getting a part 3 at this point.
2. The Long Walk
Release Date | September 12th |
Director | Francis Lawrence |
Main Cast | Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing |
Duration | 108 minutes |
Synopsis
A group of teenage boys compete on a contest known as “The Long Walk” where the rules are simple: walk or die.
Overview
The past couple of films I have seen in the theater have all shown The Long Walk’s trailer and whenever it played, there was a palpable curiosity in the auditorium. The trailer for the film looks great and I’m surprised Stephen King’s novel as adapted earlier, especially after the success of films such as The Hunger Games. Speaking of which, the director of The Hunger Games is the one that is directing this. It seems fitting and is a good sign that The Long Walk is in good hands.
1. The Conjuring: Last Rites
Release Date | September 5th |
Director | Michael Chaves |
Main Cast | Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Mia Tomlinson |
Duration | 135 minutes |
Synopsis
Ed and Lorraine Warren take on their last case involving a family that just recently moved to a home that harbors a demonic presence.
Overview
This one is pretty obvious. The Conjuring films were so popular that they spun off multiple spin off films, each becoming financially successful. This films are juggernauts now and are guaranteed box office successes. This is the “last” Conjuring film supposedly, but with the success of these films, it’s hard to imagine it will actually be the last. If it is actually the last, until an inevitable reboot down the line, it’s refreshing to see a horror franchise not completely run into the ground with horrible sequels. Not every film is able to capture the magic of the first film, but they each have something that makes them different than the one that came before while offering up fun scares.
