September was no slouch this year. There were numerous horror movies released in preparation for the scary season. Thankfully, October still has plenty of movies ready to scare moviegoers. Like the previous year, there are too many to mention here. Some honorable mentions includes Coyotes, Vicious, and Dream Eater. Now let’s take a look at the biggest horror movies releasing in October.

5. Bone Lake
Release Date | October 3rd |
Director | Mercedes Bryce Morgan |
Main Cast | Alex Roe, Maddie Hasson, Marco Pigossi |
Duration | 94 minutes |
Synopsis
A couple’s vacation takes a turn when they’re forced to share their getaway mansion with another couple, turning their dream into a nightmarish horror.
Overview
I don’t know too much about Bone Lake. It is releasing very soon however and the reviews for the film are glowing. The synopsis for this sort of reminds me of Barbarian, where the girl in that film had to share an Airbnb with another guy. I think I have an idea of how this one will go but I’m not certain. Either way, the glowing reviews have me quite excited to check this one out in theaters.
4. Good Boy
Release Date | October 3rd |
Director | Ben Leonberg |
Main Cast | Indy, Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman |
Duration | 62 minutes |
Synopsis
A dog moves into a new home with its owner, but when new supernatural forces are introduced, the dog must find a way to protect its owner.
Overview
Good Boy is a fun idea for a horror movie where we get the perspective of the pet dog. The trailer for this film had such a large viewership that the studio decided to expand the release from limited to wide release. And for good reason. Everyone loves dogs, and pair that alongside a haunted house story and you got yourself a large audience. The film is on the shorter side only clocking in about 62 minutes. It’ll be interesting to see how the director utilizes that time to tell his story.
3. Shelby Oaks
Release Date | October 24th |
Director | Chris Stuckmann |
Main Cast | Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Michael Breach, Keith David |
Duration | 99 minutes |
Synopsis
A woman’s search for her missing sister turns into an obsession upon realizing that the imaginary demon from their childhood might be real after all.
Overview
I’m excited for Shelby Oaks for multiple reasons. The first reason is that this film is directed by Chris Stuckmann, the famous YouTube reviewer. I have been following Chris for over a decade and can’t wait to see what he conjurs up in this horror film. It’s inspiring to see him be able to direct something. The second reason I’m excited is that this is a found footage movie. Thank god! We need more of those…or maybe it’s only me that needs that. And lastly, the film premiered at festivals and has garnered great reviews. I can’t wait to check this one out in theaters when it releases October 24th.
2. V/H/S Halloween (Shudder)
Release Date | October 3rd |
Directors | Bryan M. Ferguson Casper Kelly R.H. Norman Alex Ross Perry Micheline Pitt Paco Plaza Anna Zlokovic |
Main Cast | David Hayn, Samantha Cochran, Teo Planell |
Duration | 115 minutes |
Synopsis
A collection of halloween-themed videotapes showcasing a variety of different horrors.
Overview
Yep, the horror anthology, V/H/S, is back again and this time, it’s Halloween-themed. How does that differ from their previous installments? I’m not sure really! I’m expecting more spooky houses in the 70s or 80s. That would be fun! And of course, this is found footage which always amps the scares for me personally. I’m expecting a lot of them. Like many movies listed here, this one also has very good reviews early on. It releases soon on Shudder. Keep an eye out for it.
1. Black Phone 2
Release Date | October 17th |
Director | Scott Derrickson |
Main Cast | Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Jeremy Davies |
Duration | 114 minutes |
Synopsis
Finn’s sister begins to receive calls in her dreams from an ominous black phone, years after Finn’s traumatic captivity.
Overview
I, like many others, thought the first Black Phone film by Scott Derrickson was a creepy and entertaining horror film. The trailers for the second one looks like it’s going to go even further with the scares and mythology of the Grabber. I’m not completely sure what the second film will be about, but it seems to be potentially be taken some cool ideas from The Nightmare on Elm Street films.
