The Surrender
Release Date | May 23rd (Shudder) |
Director | Julia Max |
Main Cast | Colby Minifie, Kate Burton, Neil Sandilands |
Duration | 95 mins |
Synopsis
When the father of a family dies, the mother and daughter perform a ritual to bring him back.
Overview
The film is getting a good amount of buzz from its showing at the SXSW film festival. A trailer for The Surrender has yet to be released, so it’s a little difficult to get a sense of the vibe this film is going for. That being said, the few reviews that came out for this movie call it twisted and scary.
Bring Her Back
Release Date | May 30th |
Director | Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou |
Main Cast | Sally Hawkins, Bill Barret, Sara Wong |
Duration | 99 minutes |
Synopsis
A brother and sister who have recently arrived at their new foster home stumble upon a horrific ritual.
Overview
Bring Her Back is setting up to be the most terrifying movie on this list. The trailer was incredibly creepy. It’s being produced by A24 who are known for making some weird as hell movies. And the director duo behind this film are the same ones behind the amazing Talk To Me film. This May horror movie has a lot of different things working in its favor. I would highly recommend this one if you think the others on this list weren’t scary enough.
Clown In A Cornfield
Release Date | May 9th |
Director | Eli Craig |
Main Cast | Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, |
Duration | 96 minutes |
Synopsis
Frendo the clown, a symbol of bygone success, reemerges as a sinister presence, seeking to terrorize the local town.
Overview
Clown in a Cornfield looks like a lot of fun. It’s looks like a relatively paint-by-numbers slasher flick, but the trailer makes it seem like they’re not going to take it too seriously. The film is based off a novel which hopefully suggests that this horror movie will be a bit deeper than what the trailer suggests. And if not, this will surely still be a fun film to shut your brain off to while stuffing your mouth full of popcorn.
Fear Street: Prom Queen
Release Date | May 23rd (Netflix) |
Director | Matt Palmer |
Main Cast | India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza |
Duration | 88 minutes |
Synopsis
A gusty outsider who is competing for prom queen realizes she is in one hell of a night when the “It” girls contestants start to disappear.
Overview
The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix are some of my favorite horror movies on the platform. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of those films. What was also cool was that those movies released back-to-back. Although Fear Street: Prom Queen is just a one-off film, it still excites me. I’m a little skeptical about the director as it doesn’t seem as though he has worked on any films in the past 7 years, but Netflix must have seen something promising to invite him on board. I already know this film will have a bunch of deaths involving characters the audience will probably hate. I can’t wait.
Final Destination: Bloodlines
Release Date | May 16th |
Director | Zach Lipovsky, Adam B. Stein |
Main Cast | Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Tony Todd, Brec Bassinger |
Duration | 110 minutes |
Synopsis
A college girl’s nightmares of tragic events can help her stop the events from occurring when they in real life. Fate doesn’t like it when you mess with its plans, however, and her family has to fight to keep death away from their doorstep.
Overview
Okay, you all know what this is. Final Destination is a well-loved horror franchise that began in the 2000s. I still hear people telling me of how they are afraid of driving behind trucks carrying lumber because of these films. It had an impact on a lot of people. Surprisingly, it has been gone for over a decade but, it’s finally making a return in May. And man, do these trailer absolutely rule. The events the director crafted are incredibly over the top, but just plausible enough to make you follow along with the disaster. Here is me hoping that this is as great a movie as the trailers are suggesting it will be… and that we’ll all unlock new fears.
