April is seeing the release of a diverse set of films. Oddly enough, most of the films on this list release on April 10th, so if you’re really in the mood, you will have one hell of a scary weekend. And finally, the last one on this film is most likely going to be the scariest one on this list. Although there aren’t a large number of horror films this month, the ones on this list should hold you over until May, when some of the best horror films of the year.
5. Hunting Matthew Nichols
| Release Date | April 10th |
| Director | Markian Tarasiuk |
| Main Cast | Miranda MacDougall, Markian Tarasiuk, Christine Willes |
| Duration | 89 minutes |
Synopsis
A documentary filmmaker sets out to find her brother, two decades after he first disappeared. She comes across disturbing evidence that points to his possible survival.
Overview
Hunting Matthew Nichols is a found footage/mockumentary film that typically yields great scares. I didn’t have this higher on the list, however, as the trailer didn’t completely sell me on the film. It looks interesting, but I couldn’t really get an idea of whether or not this film will truly be scary.
4. Faces of Death
| Release Date | April 10th |
| Director | Daniel Goldhaber |
| Main Cast | Dacre Montgomery, Barbie Ferreira, Josie Totah |
| Duration | 98 minutes |
Synopsis
A content moderator comes across some tapes that are eerily familiar to the death scenes in a film.
Overview
The idea of Faces of Death is quite disturbing. I always thought that the job of a content moderator wouldn’t be something I’d ever want to do because of all of the gross things they must come across. And the trailer illustrated that very clearly. I think this could easily be the most disturbing film on this list, depending on how they go about it.
3. Exit 8
| Release Date | April 10th |
| Director | Genki Kawamura |
| Main Cast | Kazunari Ninomiya, Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma |
| Duration | 95 mins |
Synopsis
A man trapped in a subway station realizes he can only leave by completing a mission.
Overview
Exit 8 is based on a video game. I haven’t played it, so I have no idea if it’s a faithful adaptation or not, but regardless, this film looks incredibly eerie. The idea of having a character repeatedly walk through an area over and over lends itself to creating great scares once the audience feels comfortable that nothing is going to happen. Having something change on the 7th time can throw off expectations completely. The trailer looks like it’s going to have a lot of weird scenery, too. The film has been shown at multiple film festivals and has garnered a lot of acclaim. I’m excited.
2. Thrash
| Release Date | April 10th |
| Director | Tommy Wirkola |
| Main Cast | Phoebe Dynevor, Djimon Hounsou, Whitney Peak |
| Duration | 83 minutes |
Synopsis
A category 5 hurricane destroys a local town, and alongside that destruction come hungry sharks.
Overview
This movie reminds me of Crawl. It has a similar premise but involved aligators. This time, we got sharks, and they are all the more scary. The director of this film is involved in a lot of fun projects such as Violent Night and The Trip (which is getting a remake releasing soon). With only 82 minutes, I’m confident the film will get straight to the point. This is sure to be a great and perhaps stressful time when it releases for streaming.
1. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy
| Release Date | April 17th |
| Director | Lee Cronin |
| Main Cast | Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Natalie Grace |
| Duration | 133 minutes |
Synopsis
The daughter of a journalist returns 8 years after having been declared missing. But her parents begin to notice that there is something sinister about her.
Overview
As the title suggests, Lee Cronin is directing this one, and his last film, Evil Dead Rise, was absolutely amazing. It was one of my favorite horror movies from that year. The trailer for this one looks absolutely terrifying, and I do not doubt that he will be able to craft a completely unnerving film here. I can’t wait for this one.
