November was a bit of a quiet month compared to October. But December is ready to continue releasing surprisingly interesting horror movies. And if you want to see them sooner rather than later, don’t fret! Most of these films come out in the first week of December. Although not mentioned in the list below, it’s possible Turno Nocturno, a Mexican horror film, will come out in December. If it does come out, it looks like a potentially scary movie that shouldn’t be missed. This list descends from #5 to #1 horror movie of the month.
Get Away
Release Date | December 6 |
Director | Steffan Haars |
Main Cast | Nick Frost, Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft |
Duration | 90 mins |
Synopsis
A family travels to a remote island for vacation unaware of the dark rituals that occur there.
Overview
Nick Frost is in yet another horror film this month, bringing his comedic sensibilities to an otherwise dark premise. From the trailer, Get Away looks like it could be a fun time. The story seems like one we have seen a thousand times before but with an over-the-top spin on it. I’m not sure how scary it’ll be but it’s sure to be a fun watch.
Chateau
Release Date | December 6 |
Director | Luke Genton |
Main Cast | Cathy Marks, Colton Tran |
Duration | 83 mins |
Synopsis
A wannabe influencer secretly records a supposedly haunted chateau that she was hired to clean, and quickly realize the rumors might have some truth to them.
Overview
I’m a huge sucker for found footage films and Chateau looks like it will carry some creepy scenes. The idea of the film taking place in a location the characters are not familiar will always interest me. It remains to be seen if the rest of the movie will deliver, but at the very least, Chateau looks like it can deliver some good scares.
Y2K
Release Date | December 6 |
Director | Kyle Mooney |
Main Cast | Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison |
Duration | 93 mins |
Synopsis
High school friends crash a New Years Eve party right before the start of the new millennium. Once the clock passes midnight, chaos quickly ensues.
Overview
The trailer for Y2K has been playing for a few months now. The concept is based on an old fear people had back in 1999. What would happen when we reached 2000? Y2K explores that fear in a more comedic way. The humor from the trailer didn’t really land with me as much as I would have liked, but the crazy ideas and scale of the film look like it will lead to a fun ride.
Werewolves
Release Date | December 6 |
Director | Steven C Miller |
Main Cast | Frank Grillo, Katarina Law |
Duration | 94 mins |
Synopsis
A supermoon event triggered a dormant gene in humans, turning them into werewolves. Two scientists attempt to stop the mutation a year after the supermoon event.
Overview
Werewolves has a few of things going for it. First off, Frank Grillo; I love this actor, and he does great work in these lower-budget horror films (just see The Purge films). Secondly, the actual werewolves in this film look great. I’m not sure if the budget for this movie will be able to sustain their appearance the entire time. The film looks a bit cheesy, but action horror is something I haven’t seen in a while so I’m looking forward to this horror movie in December more than most.
Nosferatu
Release Date | December 25 |
Director | Robert Eggers |
Main Cast | Emma Corrin, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson |
Duration | 133 mins |
Synopsis
A horrific vampire obsessed with a young woman wreaking havoc in its wake.
Overview
A star-studded cast, and a gothic tale helmed by Robert Eggers? This December horror movie is on many people’s top 10 anticipated movies of the year. I wouldn’t expect Nosferatu to have a whole lot of jumpscares but instead to be a more thought-provoking horror film. Robert Eggers rarely disappoints, and I’m sure the gothic vibe will give an unsettling feeling.
