The Behemoth: An Interview About Their Future Releases

Recently, The Behemoth announced in a video their future plans with their main products such as Castle Crashers, Battleblock Teather and Alien Hominid. KeenGamer did a quick interview to their founders to obtain an internal opinion on the subject.

On July 26, 2024, the official The Behemoth Youtube channel released, without any prediction, a trailer for their upcoming plans presented as a road map, where they announced updates for their main products such as a port of Alien Hominid for the PS5, Steam Workshop support for Castle Crashers and a Quality of Life update for Battleblock Theater, in addition to announce a new game release without giving any more details.

The upcoming Castle Crashers update will include a visual revamp

All of this was unexpected and surprising, as the last thing the company had announced was a strategy game on 2018 (Pit People) and a small update to Castle Crashers on 2019, so KeenGamer decided to send over a few questions to their founders: Tom Fulp (T), Dan Paladin (D) and John Baez (J), to try and clarify where such big news came from, and these were their answers:

So, The Behemoth, I’m certain none of your fans (Including myself) saw this update coming, I mean, a DLC coming 12 years after the launch of the game? What was the planning behind this whole  roadmap? And not just Castle Crashers, you’re aiming to give a new coat of paint to all of your games.

D: It’s great to be able to give everyone something new to check out about games they have memories of or to give newcomers more quality content. As creators first, we love all the stuff we’ve made. A tune-up only makes sense for the whole library! After revisiting Alien Hominid the next logical step was to see what sort of things we might be able to do with Castle Crashers since that fits in chronologically. When I was redrawing the knights just as a test, I thought «hey, why shouldn’t you be able to make them into something as well? The plan we came up with worked easily enough that we could pull it off and here we are!

Now it’s been quite a while, Newgrounds isn’t the powerhouse it was 10 years ago, do you believe there’s still a public to capture bringing Alien Hominid to PS5? Most kids wouldn’t recognize this iconic character

T: Alien Hominid is a timeless sort of character and people don’t need to be familiar with the web game to take an interest. Aliens are hot right now!

D: I feel like Aliens are in the same space as Dinosaurs. They’re just infinitely cool!

J: You’ve hit the nail on the head, Irving. Part of the reason to release on the PS5 is to bring something totally new and unrecognized to a vast horde of humans who have never tasted the blood of Alien Hominid in a melee battle. Just think of it….20 years after release, an entire population of people who have never seen the likes of our little alien friend. These people will be forever changed by the meat slices and wood chippers of yesteryear…but they will think it is BRAND NEW because of the nine million P graphics!

D: People will say they are crazy because they didn’t really see the Alien!!! We won’t be able to trust our own eyes!! The very fabric of society will crumble.

This will be the first time since its launch, that Alien Hominid will be available for Playstation consoles

Talking about recognizing, the internet has changed a lot regarding the humor that is publicly accepted nowadays, do you believe this might present a challenge in bringing the iconic newgrounds trademark of humor to the present day?

T: The Boys on Amazon is classic Newgrounds humor and it’s their flagship show, so we think we can navigate these waters.

D: Awwwww is the baby too young to understand farty poop jokes? Awww it’ll be alright lol

J: If we don’t remind people of the FACTS of internet history, we will be forever lost as a culture which becomes constantly in flux because of AI generated simulacra. I suppose the greatest regret I have with the re-release of Alien Hominid HD last year is that we didn’t fill up the loading screens with all the awards and accolades the title won over the years. The 2004 release of Alien Hominid truly was the beginning of the greatest age of console indie development! Now pay attention – here’s a short reminder:

  • Alien Hominid is the first console game to win an IGF award at the Game Developers
Conference, 2005 (Winner of three awards!)
  • Nintendo Power Awards 2004:

Now, I saw in your roadmap announcement, that you made sure to credit the talented Waterflame. Will there be any plans to bring him in again for a musical revamp perhaps? Should we, the fans, expect new tracks from him or maybe a new artist coming along on the roadmap?

T: The future is a mystery!

D: MYSTERIOUSl We’ll probably have a couple audio-based Turkish delights in there somewhere.

J: ???

With this we finally concluded the interview, I thanked them for their time and the only thing that is left to do now is wait and see what does The Behemoth has prepared for the near future.

When did you played Alien Hominid or Castle Crashers for the first time? Whether you were one of the lucky ones that experienced these amazing games on their original release or you’re just discovering them, we want to hear you in the comments.
