Wizard of Legend 2 Review: Typical Elemental Roguelike

Wizard of Legend 2 brings a fun elemental roguelike experience where you combine multiple elements to defeat your enemies. It’s fun mixing and matching elements to try different strategies. Unfortunately, a similarity to other roguelike games doesn’t help the game stand out from other titles.

Wizard of Legend 2 Review: Typical Elemental RoguelikeWielding multiple elements and fighting your way to be a master is a difficult task. There will be many times where you stumble on your way. But with grit and persistence, you overcome the obstacles to become a master. Then push yourself even further to see what heights you can accomplish. The magic you can combine, develop, and experiment with is almost endless. Various playstyles become possible as you adapt to your enemies with every attempt.

Wizard of Legend 2 gives you powerful elemental magic that you can wield in a variety of ways. Unlocking various playstyles and fighting powerful enemies while experimenting is fun to do. The main problem is that the game doesn’t seem to differentiate itself from other roguelikes, with no mechanics that truly stand out. While it remains a fun roguelike to spend time on, you might be alright with existing roguelikes in your game collection.

Wizard of Legend 2 is available on PC for USD 19.99.

Story – Becoming a Master

You are one of the top wizards aiming to be the titular Wizard of Legend. Throughout your journey, your skills are tested by several masters who you must defeat. There are also additional people who offer services or amazing power at a price. But everyone is working together to train you through the trials you face. Even after you become the Wizard of Legend, you are still aiming to be the best you can.

The story is similar to other roguelikes like Terminus: Zombie Survivors. It’s only there to set the premise of magical training and improvement. Once you get started, you might forget that there is even a story at all. While you meet new characters, they are all related to helping you achieve your goal. The main draw of Wizard of Legend 2 is the gameplay and you won’t pay much attention to the story, if you even do.

Gameplay – Elemental Roguelike Combat

You run around levels fighting enemies and look for the exit. After two levels, you fight a boss. Each level gives you a chance to earn gold, practice your moves, and learn enemy movement patterns. As you progress, you get a variety of elemental magic to complement your basic speciality. This allows you to specialise in purely one element or use multiple types at once. However, some spells don’t have clear explanations or it’s something you can only test once you fight in the field.

Who you encounter and what spells you get are random every time. The layouts resemble each other overtime and the main difference per run are the bosses you encounter. Wizard of Legend 2 has a strong foundation that helps you ease into the roguelike gameplay. The elemental variety helps you battle enemies while opening up possibilities for unique combinations. Even combining the powers of fire and ice produce effects that help cover your weaknesses.

With practice, you can see the perfect time to dodge and strike.

These unique combinations are fun to experiment with and you can get access to new magic over time. Failure is expected and you must repeatedly try again to get the experience you need to win. What hurts Wizard of Legend 2 is the lack of differentiating factors compared to other roguelikes. As fun as the gameplay is, you start feeling like you have done this before if this isn’t your first roguelike

Similarity – Hard to Ignore

You can’t vary the roguelike gameplay much but even games like Devil Jam have something unique to stand out. Wizard of Legend 2 feels like a different skin on a similar roguelike. Mixing and matching offensive methods is nothing new. Fighting tough bosses is part of the package. There’s no unique mechanic that helps you stand without the possible exception of co-op play. Without co-op, you probably won’t consider Wizard of Legend 2 compared to other titles.

It's not hard to find stores in many roguelikes, why is this one special?

It’s not hard to find stores in many roguelikes, why is this one special?

The punishing difficulty, the variation in spells, repeated attempts after multiple failures, all of that is similarly done in other ways. That doesn’t mean the game isn’t fun to play or that you won’t genuinely enjoy it. But without something special that makes the game stand out, it’s hard to recommend Wizard of Legend 2. You could load another roguelike or even purchase another well-known title to get a decent experience. Any game with a significant difference wins out.

Audio & Visual – Fast-Paced Fights

The elemental magic shines when it’s used in combat. You can tell what spells are being used along with the accompanying physical movement. Everything looks vibrant and animated, with the environments matching the opponents you encounter. This is especially notable when you step into new realms for temporary challenges as the environment changes drastically. It’s a nice touch that immerses you in the elemental magic experience.

You can clearly hear the background music but you won’t notice it over the enemy attacks. When you return to the base at the end of each run, the music is soothing and somewhat encouraging. It makes you feel like you are undergoing a trial and everyone is rooting for you. During a run, you hear the magic effects, the enemy moving, and the sound cues you must look out for.
