Story | Escape and Exact Revenge

Trepang2 puts us in the shoes of Subject 106,  an escaped captive turned into a ruthless soldier, who has no memories of their past life but is infused with supernatural abilities. Revenge is on your mind, and you’ll stop at nothing to get what you want.

I have to say, although some story points are interesting and have great potential, the game does not delve deeper into said points, instead, the game feels like we’re going through episodic events that are disjointed from one another. Any plot points that we explore during a certain mission are rarely, if not, never brought up again in the next missions, which is quite a shame, as I genuinely do believe the lore had potential and would’ve been more intriguing had the plot points from each mission connected.

One thing to note is that Trepang2 feels and looks like the spiritual successor of the F.E.A.R. series, though I have to say that those who seek the horror aspect of F.E.A.R. won’t find them in Trepang2. Sure enough, there are some missions where you encounter creepy moments, but those might not be enough to quench your thirst for that thrill of traversing through horror-filled stages.

Gameplay | Blasting Through Hell

For this part of the Trepang2 review, I will sift through the game’s main attraction: its gameplay. From the wide range of weapons, down to the two superpowers we have, the game offers many things to make the gameplay the most fun you had while playing a game in a while.

Arsenal of Guns

The main attraction of Trepang2 includes the diverse options of weapons, ranging from pistols, shotguns, and rifles, among other types of weapons. However, to keep it fair and interesting, players can only equip 2 weapons at any given time. Personally, I prefer equipping the SPAS-12 and Vector whenever I can, as I find those two weapons complement each other well.

The SPAS-12 is a pump-action shotgun that holds 6 bullets, and its destructive power is enormous, especially in close quarters. On the flip side, the Vector is a fast-firing SMG that holds 50 bullets, so it’s the perfect weapon for engaging enemies in close and mid-range. However, both weapons have their downsides, such as the ammo scarcity for SPAS-12 or Vector’s low damage.

And this is where the wide range of weapons comes in. The game does have its limitations because the number of weapons in Trepang2 can’t compete with the likes of Far Cry or World War Z, but every single one of them has its uses and advantages for all conditions. For example, a Sniper Rifle can hit targets that are far from you, and a Pistol can be your best friend when you’re in a pinch. Trepang2 has served the means on the table, so it’s up to you on which ones you’re going to pick to make it to the end.

Two Superpowers

Apart from the wide range of weapons, Trepang2 also comes with two superpowers for players to utilize. They are Cloaking and Bullet Speed. These two tools are crucial in getting through the game at ease.

Let’s talk about Cloaking first. To activate this ability, you can press E (the default key), and press it once again to exit Cloaking. This ability is useful whenever you need to sneak past a group of soldiers or enemies from an area, or when you want to flank them from another angle to gain a better advantage, or to simply break the line of sight from the enemies. However, the enemies can counter this ability by deploying Flares, which you must avoid whenever you’re activating Cloaking, or you’ll get spotted immediately.

Meanwhile, Bullet Speed is another superpower you get at the start of the game. To activate it, you can press Q (the default key), and press it once again to exit Bullet Speed. This ability grants your eyesight to see everything in slow motion, giving you a major advantage against your enemies and allowing you to land the perfect shots or simply dodge incoming attacks. Moreover, this ability’s usage bar can replenish whenever you kill an enemy, though it will keep draining if you fail to do so.

In addition, you, as Subject 106, have superhuman strength, durability, and speed, allowing your movement and power to be very nimble and deadly. Apart from Cloaking and Bullet Speed, you can slide through the environment by pressing the Alt key. This feature allows you to knock most of your enemies, so when paired in tandem with either Cloaking or Bullet Speed, sliding is super useful and is almost crucial for playing through the game.

Graphics and Sound | Constant Adrenaline

To close off this Trepang2 review, I will touch upon its graphics and sound design. Right off the bat, I find the game’s graphics very polished and overall solid-looking. The environmental props across all stages are adequate and serve their purpose well, and I don’t find any clipping issues when playing through the game, even when I’m sliding through everywhere like a madman.

Another thing that stands out is the gun model. They’re very detailed and recognizable, allowing the players to quickly deduce what kind of gun they’re using or will use. For example, the SPAS-12 plays exactly the way I imagined them to be: destructive and precise. The same goes for the Vector, I find them quick, but very reliable in many situations.

And the sound design is wonderful as well. I had pure bliss when listening to the heavy metal soundtracks that play whenever I’m in a battle, to the point where I sometimes deliberately let the battle go on for a little longer just to keep hearing the adrenaline-punching soundtrack. There are absolutely no issues with the sound design; in fact, it’s one of Trepang2‘s strongest points.

Summary
To summarize, Trepang2 is a brilliant fast-paced game filled with non-stop action and allows the players to be creative on how to kill the enemies that stand in their way. However, the story holds back the game's potential, and unfortunately, if you're looking for the horror aspect that reminds you of F.E.A.R, then Trepang2 won't quench that thirst. Still, the game is overall a solid experience for those who seek some quick thrill during their free time.
