Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series for $39.99. The second part of the game is scheduled for release on April 15, as the wizards at DON’T NOD seek to fine-tune the rest of the game.

Story – A Feeling of Life is Strange and Stranger Things

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 is a coming-of-age story shrouded in mystery. Players slip into the shoes of Swann Holloway, an introverted, artistic teenager who faces the challenges of adolescence while preparing for a life-changing move to Vancouver. As she spends her last summer at Velvet Cove, she unexpectedly bonds with three other girls – Nora, Autumn and Kat – forming an inseparable friendship that revolves around their shared love of music.

Today, the four once close friends have gone their separate ways, each scarred by their past but reluctant to return to it. Yet when fate brings them together again after almost three decades, the truth about what happened that summer begins to unfold. The game masterfully weaves together past and present, allowing players to piece together the story and establish an intimate bond with these characters as they confront their memories.

The writing is lively, sincere and authentic. The characters seem like real people, shaped by their individual experiences and struggles. Swann’s passion for filmmaking, Autumn’s poetic soul, Kat’s rebellious energy and Nora’s quiet intensity come together beautifully, creating an incredibly believable dynamic group. Themes of nostalgia, the weight of unresolved emotions and the evolution of friendships over time are deeply explored. The game captures the joy and pain of growing up, the fleeting moments of youth that seem endless at the time but disappear before you know it.

If you enjoyed Life is Strange, Oxenfree or Night in the Woods, you’ll find that Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 is an equally touching, introspective journey that stays with you long after you’ve finished it.

Gameplay – A Formula That Never Changes

Although Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 is first and foremost a narrative experience, it offers attractive gameplay elements that reinforce immersion and encourage exploration. Unlike traditional point-and-click adventures, the game incorporates mechanics that feel organic and meaningful, allowing players to interact with the world in a way that deepens their connection to the story.

Swann’s camcorder is one of the game’s most unique features. It serves as both a storytelling tool and a gameplay mechanic. Players can use it to record moments throughout the game, capturing key interactions and details of the environment. These recordings act as a kind of “memory album”, providing insight into character relationships and personal reflections.

As in other DON’T NOD titles, player choices are important. Conversations feel natural, and dialogue options allow for meaningful interactions that shape how characters perceive each other. While Tape 1 focuses primarily on setting up the story, it’s clear that choices will have long-term consequences, particularly in the second half of the game.

The game encourages players to explore their surroundings, discovering small, meaningful details that add to the depth of the narrative. Old posters, mixtapes, handwritten notes and personal objects all tell a story, creating an immersive atmosphere that makes the world feel lived-in and real.

Graphics and Sound – It’s Beautiful, Soothing, and at the Same Time Scary

Visually, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 is a work of art in the DON’T NOD tradition. The game’s art direction perfectly captures the atmosphere of the 90s, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Every location feels authentic. The cinematography is also outstanding, using dynamic angles and well-framed shots to create a sense of intimacy. The way the camera lingers on a quiet moment or zooms in on a lively conversation adds a cinematic quality that enhances the narrative.

Music is the heart and soul of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1, and the game’s soundtrack is simply phenomenal. Atmospheric music sets the perfect mood, whether it’s a melancholy, dreamy melody during a moment of reflection, or an energetic, distortion-filled track during a band performance. The game features an incredible selection of alternative, grunge and punk tracks from the 90s. These songs don’t just serve as background music; they actively contribute to the emotional tone of the game, making every moment more impactful.

As for the cast’s performances, they’re really good, with each actor and actress bringing depth and authenticity to their characters. Voices never sound forced or exaggerated – conversations seem organic, full of pauses, hesitations and emotional shifts, just like in real-life discussions.
