There are many kind of gamers, and one of these is the collector: gamers who love going around the world map finding, documenting, and gathering all manner of things. It’s relaxing, rewarding, and gets you out into the game’s world. Perhaps, then, a game such as Collector’s Cove might appeal to avid collectors, since this game is all about just that.
In Collector’s Cove, you farm and fish on the comforts of your own boat, steered by an adorable sea creature. The ultimate goal is to become a top collector and make it to the coveted and titular Collector’s Cove. If this piques your interest, discover whether it’s worth putting 25-30+ hours into this game with this in-depth review.
Collector’s Cove will be available from March 12, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch for $19.99.
Story – Become the World’s Greatest Collector
In Collector’s Cove, you are embarking on a journey, in which the main goal is to become a top collector. Your parents are already veteran collectors and are out there in the world. You are following in their footsteps. As collectors, you travel the world, documenting new discoveries with crops and fishes.
As you rank up as a collector by making new discoveries, you receive letters from your uncles, as well as your parents. They remind you of your main goal and how well you’ve progressed so far, as well as anything new you’ve unlocked.
Although the story is mainly there to provide context on your short and long-term goals, Collector’s Cove works fine in this regard. You’re going to be far too busy farming, fishing, gathering, and minding your boat and companion to worry too much about a complex story.
Gameplay – The Ultimate Collectathon
If you enjoy gathering, documenting, and collecting in games, Collector’s Cove is a collector’s paradise. You’ll be spoiled with the amount of collecting available. You’ll quickly be drawn into fishing, growing crops, chopping trees, mining rocks, and more. It’s an endless plethora of gathering.
Not Just Another Farming Game…Or Fishing Game
Collector’s Cove has two core mechanics at the heart of collecting: farming and fishing. The main goal of Collector’s Cove is to complete your Collector’s Compendium. Doing this rightfully earns you the title of Named Collector, which in turn grants you access to the titular Collector’s Cove. Before you can get there though, you need to fill the Compendium, and to do that, you need to get very busy with growing a variety of crops and catching lots of different fish.
Gather, Gather Some More, Special Task
Growing crops and catching fish may sound like just another farming and fishing game, but Collector’s Cove has a unique system. In simple terms, with crops, you harvest a certain plant a number of times, then you unlock the fertilizer, which you then use on the plants to grow them to a high-quality value. The final step is to meet certain conditions to produce the rare plant from said crop (not forgetting the fertilizer!)
Fishing is practically the same. You must catch a fish a number of times, then catch the same fish again using the newly-unlocked bait, and finally match conditions to find the rare fish.
Once the rare plant is produced and harvested, or the rare fish is caught, you then feed it to your companion to level up your bond. As you fill your Compendium and bond with your boat companion, you level up as a collector. This unlocks new abilities, new areas to explore, extra plants to grow and fish to catch, plus perks for your companion and your boat. Discovering new species of plants and fish is key to progressing in Collector’s Cove.
The Grindstone
One thing you might say about farming and fishing is that it does require a degree of grinding – and Collector’s Cove is no exception. You have to grow lots of plants and catch lots of fish to hit your targets.
It becomes especially harder when you fish and farm for later-discovered species. Fishing is especially tricky because fish appear at different times of day, and some are more difficult to reel in. Plus, you’ll need some serious cash to be able to afford all the seeds you need for growing all those crops, not to mention keeping them watered and waiting patiently for them to produce anything.
Fortunately, Collector’s Cove doesn’t leave you high-and-dry. Harvesting fertilized plants may gift you extra seeds. Also, if you’re finding it hard to catch the required number of fish to unlock the bait recipe or even the fabled condition, you can use a shortcut thanks to one of your uncles, who will gladly sell you the recipes and conditions, providing you have the required resources, namely crops and fish. It’s key to stock up!
Tools at the Ready
On your boat, you need tools for your fishing and farming endeavours, such as a bait maker and a compost bin to make fertilizer. These tools work great. My only grind was there was no upgrade perk for the compost bin, just the bait maker, so although it took less time to produce bait for fishing, fertilizer took a lot longer to wait for – and you can only make one bait or fertilizer at a time.
A Positive Grind
Collector’s Cove has that classic grinding gameplay, but it’s more positive than a nuisance. This is what Collector’s Cove is all about: farming, fishing, and gathering resources in order to build tools or place decorations on your boat, buy more seeds to grow, buy accessories for your companion, etc. It is brilliantly addictive, and you’ll easily lose track of time.
Although it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get the fabled conditions of your crops and fish, catching that special fish or obtaining that rare plant makes all the work and grind you put in really rewarding. You don’t ever feel like you’re wasting your time, or that it’s all pointless. Everything you do in Collector’s Cove is worth it.
Home Sweet Boat
Another big selling point of Collector’s Cove, aside from the unique fabled plants and fish you acquire, is your boat. Your farm is set on a boat, which is entirely yours to command. All your crops are grown on here, and you can fish from the side of the boat as well. Plus, you can place down the tools you’ll need to help you manage your farm and fishing, as well as decorate it with objects.
You can place a variety of objects on your boat. These can be decorative, or more practical, such as tools or a place to grow your crops or put your excess items. Providing you have the resources, building and placing items in Collector’s Cove is very easy. It’s also simple enough to move stuff around, which is handy such as butterfly houses (which accelerates crop growth).
Your Faithful Companion
Since this is a boat, you can of course travel around the seas on it, venturing to different islands – but you’re not driving the boat. Instead, your faithful companion is, a friendly giant sea creature at the bow.
At the start of the game, you customize your companion’s appearance and can even name them. Throughout your journey, they are your loyal friend. They get you from place-to-place, and you can unlock new abilities and perks such as helping to water your plants or increased stamina.
Whilst traveling to new lands, your companion doesn’t have indefinite stamina. If it runs out, they’ll stop so they can sleep and regenerate their energy. If you want to keep going, you’ll need to feed them fish or crops to keep them fuelled up so they don’t get tired on your trip.
Your companion isn’t just useful, but they’re extremely adorable, too. They’re wonderfully charming and endearing, and as your bond grows in the game, you’ll probably find yourself growing fond of them, too. You’ll never feel annoyed towards them, even if they run low on stamina at inconvenient moments.
A Helping Hand
Completing your Compendium is no easy feat. It’s not impossible, but it’s no picnic either. Fortunately, you’re not alone on your quest. You have the assistance of not one, but three very helpful uncles who travel around on their own companion-driven boat, who are at your beck-and-call.
Each uncle has their own stand and means of business. One sells you crop seeds, another offers upgrades for your boat and resource exchanging, and the third sells you recipes for decorations, accessories for your companion, and bait recipes, fertilizer recipes, and fabled conditions. The latter three are extremely useful if you’re struggling to catch enough fish or harvest enough crops to unlock a bait recipe or fabled condition.
Notes About the Secret Seller
One point to make is that for the third uncle, known as the secret seller, to access him on the boat, you need to first locate him somewhere in the region. He appears only on a designated island. Once you find him, he’ll be on the boat, but whenever you travel to a new area, you’ll need to locate him again.
Another thing to mention with the secret seller is purchasing his wares. While they’re great, only a limited selection is on show at a time, and they’re not randomized. This means if you’re looking to get a certain recipe, you may need to keep purchasing the others until you get it, even if you didn’t want them. This can make buying items from the seller a grind in itself, as you need certain fish and crops for each one, and they all vary.

The secret seller is useful for shortcuts to getting fabled species, but you need to find him first.
Four Unique Locations
In Collector’s Cove, you travel across four distinctive areas to fill your Compendium. Initially, only one area is available, but as you build your collection, you unlock new areas. These areas are all unique from one another, reflecting a different theme and season, providing different fish to catch, crops to grow, and resources to gather. They also offer their own climates and weather.
One thing to keep in mind while traveling to different regions is that crops only grow in the regions they’re native to. When traveling to a new area, the crops you still have on your boat will stop growing, even if you water them.
Sea Days
Possibly the only really tedious part about Collector’s Cove, which is more minor than anything, is traveling across the map. From one end to another, it takes a whole in-game day. Even the shortest-possible trip takes 8 hours. If you’re traveling across the regions a lot, prepare to be stuck at sea for a while (unless you sleep).
However, you can make use of this time by tending to your crops, fishing, etc. All boat activities are available as normal; you just can’t leave and explore until you hit land. Also, a unique event occurs where crates and barrels drift past your boat. Using a special plunger gun, you can reel these in and get random resources.
Exploring the Islands
In every region of Collector’s Cove, there are four different types of islands to visit: a small island, bountiful island, secret seller location, and a treasure island. All the islands have trees you can chop for wood, rocks to mine for rocks and ore, and dirt to dig for your crops. There are other things to look out for, such as free crops to harvest, or hidden treasure chests offering goodies such as seeds or even accessories and recipes.
The treasure islands are a fun part of exploring. Every region has 1 or 2 of these. There’s a treasure chest that can only be opened by extinguishing the ruins, usually 2 to 4. Depending on the region, you may have to hit a special rock, rotate an item into the correct position, or get a sequence in the right order.
Traveling Between Regions
If you want to visit a different type of region, you need to begin a new expedition by visiting the map. This is very straightforward and does not reset anything on your boat or your progress, neither does it cost anything. You can travel back and forth between regions as often as you like, which you need to do to get all the resources, fish, and plants.
Character Customization
We’ll quickly touch on the character customization available in Collector’s Cove, as it’s worth mentioning. At the start, you create your own character. Everything is available from the get-go. Although you only unlock new accessories for your companion, there’s enough customization available for your character already.
It may seem that only a handful of clothing items are available, but each one has a large offering of colors and designs, so you can have fun mixing and matching and dressing your character up.
Bugs?
Does Collector’s Cove have any bugs? One or two were encountered in the playthrough, including the rare crash. Fortunately, bugs were a rarity in Collector’s Cove, and nothing that was game-breaking. The bugs didn’t prevent an enjoyable experience, and these can easily be addressed through patches. Bugs are not a cause for concern in Collector’s Cove, at least not to dent its reputation. It is not a notoriously buggy experience.
Graphics & Audio – An Enchanting World With Intriguing Discoveries
Everything in Collector’s Cove is brought to life thanks to its wonderful graphics and audio. Each of the four regions look fantastic and are a joy to explore, with effort made to ensure they are all unique from one another, in appearance and atmosphere, not just content. You almost feel like you’re in a different world that feels magical, no thanks to the marvelous collection of special fish and plants available to find.
The cartoonish graphics of Collector’s Cove works perfectly for this game, providing the much-needed whimsy and magic, as well as providing an organic and natural feel, making the worlds feel alive in their own right. The companion is also beautifully designed and animated, looking especially adorable and being irresistibly loved.
The audio gets it right as well in Collector’s Cove, providing each area its own unique soundtrack to fully immerse you into the stylized zone. The sound effects also work well. It’s satisfying harvesting a plant or catching a fish, especially with the sound effect accompanying it.
