In this review, we will explore the gameplay and graphical aspects of Aliens: Dark Descent by Tindalos Interactive. Aliens: Dark Descent is the newest entry to the long-standing franchise in which players must gather top soldiers to combat the unknown and stop a new and terrifying kind of Xenomorph outbreak on Planet Lethe.
Aliens: Dark Descent delivers a spine-chilling gaming experience that keeps players on the edge of their seats from start to finish. With a suspenseful atmosphere, great story, and strong gameplay, this game manages to deliver many of its promises.
At first, I jumped into the game expecting to see another abomination that can rival Aliens: Fireteam. However, Aliens: Dark Descent manages to shatter my expectations and achieve what I believe is one of the best iterations of the Aliens franchise.
Aliens: Dark Descent is available on Steam for $23.99.
Story: True to Its Roots
If you are familiar with the Aliens franchise, then you should have no issues with the Aliens: Dark Descent story. Just like in the movies, Aliens: Dark Descent excels in building a sense of tension and fears through its storytelling.
The scary story is complemented by a tense and isolated environment. Each encounter with aliens or other characters makes the story more intense. Aliens: Dark Descent is different from other games because it has a good story and gameplay. The story and gameplay are well-integrated, and the dialogue, lore, and characters are memorable. The game is immersive and makes you feel dread and anticipation.
Throughout the game, you’ll encounter moral dilemmas, make tough choices, and face the consequences of your actions. In this game, you start as Maeko Hayes, a Deputy Administrator for the Pioneer Station that eventually joined up with the USMC because of the Xenomorph infestation in the station. But really, the star of the story is every one of your customizable soldiers.
Gameplay: Race Against the Clock
Aliens: Dark Descent offers plenty of thrilling mechanics and an eerie atmosphere to complement its gameplay. Personally, I feel that this game is the ultimate crossover between the XCOM series and the Darkest Dungeon series,
In this Aliens: Dark Descent review, we’ll take a look at the game’s Alien AI, Stress Levels, and Soldiers’ Unique Quirks that make this game a standout among other game titles.
Brilliant Alien AI
The alien creatures’ intelligent AI keeps you constantly on your toes, as it adapts to your strategies and becomes more and more relentless as the game progresses. Stealth, equipment and quick decisions are the essence of survival, adding tension and strategic depth to the experience. Aliens: Dark Descent strikes a balance between action and suspense, making each second spent a scary moment.
Stress Levels
Aliens: Dark Descent has a stress system that affects every soldier in the game. The system captures the psychological breakdown of a soldier encountering a horrifying alien creature. Stress Levels are affected by the multiple blimps on the motion tracker and getting spotted by the aliens. When your soldiers have a high enough Stress Level, they will enter a weakened state, reducing their combat effectiveness. To reduce Stress Levels, you can create a shelter to rest by welding all the doors in a room.
Soldiers’ Unique Quirks
One of the unique features of Aliens: Dark Descent is the inclusion of unique quirks for each soldier, adding some individuality and depth to the game During your journey, everyone has unique personality traits, skills, and abilities distinguishing them from each other.
The addition of unique quirks for each soldier in Aliens: Dark Descent increases gameplay variety and immersion. These individual qualities create a sense of attachment to the characters and create more opportunities for performances. It is a great feature that further enhances the overall enjoyment and replayability of the game.
The game also offers few but appreciated customization options for your soldiers. These options allow you to customize and personalize your character’s appearance and equipment. While the options may be limited, they are good enough to make a difference in how your character is portrayed and perceived in the game world.
Graphics and Sound: Horror Incarnate
Graphically, Aliens: Dark Descent is a treat for the eyes. The detailed environments, good lighting, and impressive character models all contribute to a visually stunning experience. The haunting sound design further enhances the game’s atmosphere, with eerie creaks, distant screams, and the relentless pursuit of the alien creature creating an auditory landscape that truly immerses players in the game’s world.
The atmosphere of the game is also skillfully designed to evoke fear and uneasiness. From the dimly lit spaceship to the unpleasant sounds heard in the distance, everything adds up to a truly immersive and terrifying experience Aliens: Dark Descent manages to capture the Aliens franchise the essence of the series, keeping players in a state of constant suspense and expectation.
To summarize this review, Aliens: Dark Descent excels on all sides, including its graphics and sound design, where every encounter and area is unique and eerie, making me have to stay on guard at all times while traversing the dark unknown areas.
