Deadpool and Wolverine is finally here after waiting for 6 years since the last Deadpool film. Let’s just get this out of the way: yes, it is absolutely worth the hype. This film not only gives fans a chance to reconnect with the beloved Wolverine character, but it delivers so much more. I even watched it in 3D, so I got to be up close and personal with the duo’s battles. Shawn Levy gave us a hilarious summer blockbuster. In my opinion, everything done for this movie was a total payoff.
Deadpool and Wolverine is now playing at a theater near you.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead
There were a lot of surprise appearances that would never be expected from the trailer. If you haven’t seen the film yet, I’m warning you to save this review for later.
Story – Everything I Wanted and More
Although this film is part of the Marvel universe and definitely has to do with some other-worldly phenomena – the core story is pretty relatable. In a very abstract summary, it’s about two guys going through their own midlife crisis. They have to team up to help each other through these tough times. It’s actually pretty heartfelt and honestly the most down-to-earth I’ve seen Deadpool in action.
A sanction of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) disrupts Wade Wilson’s birthday party and tries to convince him to return as Deadpool. They want him to help end his own timeline after the death of his world’s Wolverine, so he realizes the only way to fix the problem is to replace his Wolverine with another timeline’s. After searching through the multiverse – he stumbles across the perfect replacement.
Of course, they run into various obstacles – the biggest being Professor X’s long ago banished (but oh so powerful) twin Cassandra Nova. She attempts to keep them in the Void which she rules and resides in, but ends up following them through a portal into Deadpool’s timeline. Deadpool and Wolverine (with a lot of help along the way) must team up to destroy her and realign the Sacred Timeline. It’s incredibly humorous, relatable across many topics, full of good ol’ fashioned bloody action, and overall a very entertaining story of these two troubled heroes trying to fix up their lives.
Characters and Performance – Chaotic and Iconic
This movie is bursting at the seams with cameos from heroes of all different timelines. There’s crossovers from X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and obviously the beloved Wolverine is brought back to life. Ryan Reynolds does an amazing job portraying Deadpool as always, but his chemistry with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is something I didn’t know I needed – but I loved every second of it. They often reminded me of Will Ferrel and John Reilly’s characters from Stepbrothers.
Aside from these two amazing main characters, Emma Corrin plays the film’s antagonist Cassandra Nova. They do a phenomenal job portraying this obviously ill-intentioned yet very articulate and precise character. It was a true evil genius brought to life and the Void in which Cassandra inhabited was full of a bunch of familiar faces for fans to revisit.
Deadpool and Wolverine first run into Johnny Storm – aka Chris Evan’s Fantastic Four character from the early 2000’s. After that, the cameos flood in. The resistance team that Johnny was a part of includes Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Channing Tatum’s debut as Gambit, Wesley Snipe’s Blade, and Dafne Keen’s return as X-23.
Believe it or not, there’s even more cameos than mentioned above. I won’t spoil all of them for you. See how many other familiar faces…and voices…return to the big screen on your own time.
Cinematography and Sound – I Need the Playlist
Stunning. The visuals of Deadpool and Wolverine are absolutely stunning. Even the opening credits were amazing and were completely integrated into the opening scene of the film. Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall in films and this one is probably the most broken of the franchise. The lighting of the film was thankfully bright as well and often set in outside settings so everything in the scenes could be viewed clearly.
Sound is another important element of Deadpool’s world and the soundtrack for this release was so fun. My favorite type of sound used in movies is when an upbeat or joyful song is used to juxtapose an intense action or gory seen. This happens immediately with the opening scene and aids Deadpool with breaking the fourth wall as he dances to NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” while obliterating TVA soldiers left and right.
Editing and Pacing – Two Hours Never Felt So Short
The editing and pacing of this film aided the cinematogprhay so well that the whole 2 hours of film felt like a quick breath. It never dragged, it never felt like too much was going on at once, it just felt extremely smooth. The special effects were done right and nothing – not even the CGI – felt too fake.
- The chemistry between the two stars made every scene feel seamless.
- Deadpool’s debut is so ugly cute that you can’t help but love it.
- Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will never be forgotten.
- There’s so many cameos to watch out for, make sure to pay attention!
