Rumors about a new portable console from Sony continue to grow. Even outlets like Bloomberg and Digital Foundry have reported that they have heard about this project, which would be focused on running PlayStation 5 games in a portable format. Now, new information would give us a better idea of the power that this supposed portable PS6 would have.
On the NeoGAF forums, the well-known user KeplerL2 (who has previously shared reliable details about the PS6 and its portable version) claimed that this console would accompany the home PS6 throughout its entire lifecycle. According to him, the portable would have more power than the PS4 Pro, but less than the PS5.
Both PS6 versions would use different SoCs (systems-on-chip), which would explain the difference in power. The portable version would be designed to operate with low voltages and a much lower compute unit (CU) count, under 40, which would allow for efficient energy consumption.
Despite that, the console is expected to be able to run PS5 games with more modest resolutions and frame rates. KeplerL2 estimates that its performance would be between an Xbox Series S and a PS5, although they note that, since it uses a completely new GPU architecture, it is still difficult to accurately calculate its final performance.
It was also mentioned that this new handheld console would be released a few months after the official launch of the PS6 home console.
For now, none of these leaks have been confirmed by Sony, so all the information should be taken with a grain of salt. We will have to wait to find out the company’s real plans.
Do you think a handheld console with this power would be successful? Leave us your opinion in the comments.
