The latest version of the game engine Unity is live with a 6.2 update. Unity initially detailed the rollout on its official blog earlier this month, along with a livestream featuring core Unity product team members providing a demo on August 19th.
Most notably, the release introduces developers to Unity AI, a configuration of generative artificial intelligence tools for contextualization, automation, and asset generation. Unity AI operates from the Editor and is intended to lower the barrier of entry for game creators.
The Unity AI generators utilize several of Unity’s first-party AI models. Additionally, Unity integrates Partner Models to generate and refine assets on top of similar functions via their principal models. Model providers are hosted under:
- Scenario – images (sprites), text, refinement
- Layer AI – sprites, refinements, custom model training
- Kinetix – humanoid animations via video-to-animation prompts
Muse and Sentis
Game developers familiar with Unity may wonder what’ll become of Unity Muse and Unity Sentis. Both namesakes clue into their core functions with ‘Muse’ aiding in inspiration and creation of prototypes and assets while Sentis (kind of sounds like “sentient”) basically embeds artificial intelligence into gameplay. With Unity AI’s new developments, Muse will be discontinued while Sentis stays although rebranded as Inference Engine.
User Data and Privacy
While Unity AI is currently free, the Unity Product Team iterated in the livesteam that Unity does NOT index developer projects within the cloud. Neither do they use the aforesaid data for training their models. All ownership of inputs and outputs stay with the developers by default. Now, the use of the word ‘default’ is entrusted by their active “opt-in” requirement for data use. Unity’s Guiding Principles is accessible on their official website as well as their Data Framework that governs all of the data obtained by their AI.
Unity 6.2 Other Key Features
Unity 6.2 also includes Mesh LOD, WorldSpace UI, new diagnostics, Android XR development updates, and more.
