Nintendo has officially unveiled the main cast for its upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, a milestone in the big-screen transposition of one of video gaming’s most legendary sagas. The film, now scheduled for release on May 7, 2027, will star Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Bragason, who recently appeared in Renegade Nell and The Radleys, brings a mix of strength and youth to the role of Zelda. Ainsworth, a rising star known for The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Sandman, plays the iconic and often silent hero Link. Aged just 16, his role hints at a youthful interpretation of the character, which could be focused on origins.
The film is directed by Wes Ball, known for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and the screenplay is now confirmed as being written by T.S. Nowlin, replacing Derek Connolly. This association augurs a visually ambitious and narrative approach to the epic mythology of Hyrule. No casting has yet been announced for Ganon, the series’ infamous villain, nor whether he will appear in his monstrous or humanoid form.
The film comes on the heels of the huge success of the 2023 Super Mario Bros. movie, which proved that Nintendo properties can dominate not only game charts but box-office figures too. With a Donkey Kong movie also in development, this could be the start of a wider cinematic universe.
With a new creative team, an all-new cast and high expectations from fans, The Legend of Zelda is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited video game adaptations to date.
