A brand new Monster Hunter Wilds trailer was shown off during the September 2024 PlayStation State of Play and, not only did we get a look at three crazy new monsters – including Wilds’ flagship monster – but we also got a confirmation of the game’s release date in 2025.
The first of the new monsters to be showcased in this trailer was Uth Duna, a strange piscine monster who is the apex predator of the Scarlet Forest. Uth Duna’s design has large fleshy fin-like flaps all over its body and scales similar to those of a salmon or a koi fish. According to the official Monster Hunter Wilds website, which was updated with new information about all three of the new creatures, Uth Duna is classified as a Leviathan, the aquatic class of monsters which includes fan-favourites like Lagiacrus. We even see Uth Duna swimming through the muddy waters of the Scarlet Forest in the trailer, bringing a shred of hope for the Lord of the Seas.
Meanwhile, the second new monster from the trailer is a new Brute Wyvern called Quematrice. These monsters bear a striking resemblance to large, scaley chickens and are said to have “disproportionately large tails” which they use to ignite the flammable substance they sit out. Quematrice’s main habitat in Monster Hunter Wilds is the Windward Plains, the sandy wastes where most of Wilds’ other new creatures prefer to roam.
- Uth Duna, Apex Predator of the Scarlet Forest
- Quematrice, Fiery Chicken
Then, last but certainly not least, the final new monster to be shown off is the Monster Hunter Wilds flagship monster.
The White Wraith, or Arkveld as the official website reveals, is a fearsome monster from a species many thought had been long extinct. With a bone-white body covered in tough scales and ragged patches of fur, Arkveld’s most distinctive characteristic is the large chain-like appendages which extend from its wings; we see it using these chains to attack a roaming Rey Dau in the trailer. The White Wraith also seems to play a pivotal role in the story, especially when it comes to Nata, one of your Hunting companions.
There were several other interesting revealed during the trailer, including a deeper look at the Scarlet Forest’s weather cycle. The Scarlet Forest’s Inclemency period is known as the Downpour, when Uth Duna is most active.
During the Downpour, a torrential rainstorm will flood the entire forest, overflowing the banks and causing the rapids to churn. Meanwhile, during periods of Plenty, the waters of the Scarlet Forest are pristine and colourful, constraining greatly against the muddy waves of Fallow.
Finally, at the end of the trailer, we got to get our first look at the Monster Hunter: Wilds box art and the official release date: Monster Hunter Wilds launches on February 28th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S. Players who pre-order Monster Hunter Wilds will get the Guild Knight Layered Armour set, as well as the Hope Charm, and those who preorder from the PlayStation Store will also receive the Monster Hunter Wilds Digital Mini Artbook.
Additionally, if you have any Monster Hunter World or Monster Hunter World: Iceborne save data, you’ll net yourself some nostalgic Palico armour and weapons when Wilds launches in early 2025.
