Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman are the first two members of the Fantastic Four who will become playable in Season 1 of Marvel Rivals, with their friends the Human Torch and The Thing arriving during the midseason update. After revealing them as new Duelist and Strategist, respectively, in yesterday’s Dev Diary, two separate videos showcasing their kits and abilities have been released, giving players an idea of how the first two Fantastic Four members will play.
Mister Fantastic joins Marvel Rivals as an interesting new Duelist who seems to be taking on more of a Tank-DPS hybrid role rather than being a straight melee DPS. His primary fire has Reed stretch his fists towards his opponents in a slow, but powerful, three-hit combo. Meanwhile, Mister Fantastic’s right-click ability entangles opponents with his stretchy arms: if you choose a single target, Reed will pull them towards him, whereas selecting a second opponent will yank them towards each other, dealing damage and launching them.
In addition to his stretchiness, Reed also has two additional abilities built around bulking himself up. The first is his Shift, which has Mister Fantastic expand significantly, allowing him to reflect back damage and even Ultimates like Iron Man’s Maximum Pulse. Then we have his E which has Reed generate a shield and dash towards a chosen target, enemy or ally, dealing damage and granting allies bonus Shields in the process. Furthermore, as Reed deals damage, he will generate Elasticity (which can be seen in the gauge under his cursor), and, when he reaches 100% Elasticity, he will trigger the Inflated State, increasing his damage and granting him even more potent shields.
- Reflect Damage and Ultimates
- Buff Up and Gain Extra Damage and Shields
Finally, Reed’s Ultimate has him ascend rapidly into the sky before bouncing down onto a chosen spot, dealing damage to any opponents caught in the AoE. He will bounce up to five times, dealing damage with each hit, before his Ultimate ends. Based on the video, he doesn’t seem to get any shields or damage mitigation during this time so shooting him out of it seems to be a viable counter.
As we mentioned above, Reed appears to be filling more of a hybrid role rather than playing as a straight DPS. He has the highest base health of any Duelist at 350 HP and many of his abilities revolve around protecting allies or bouncing back damage. This makes him a very interesting pick and another example of the Rivals’ developer’s desire to apply more nuanced class design to the game.
Joining Mister Fantastic in the first half of Season 1 is his wife, Susan Storm, also known as The Invisible Woman. She’ll be joining as a new Strategist who will utilise her iconic invisibility powers alongside her ability to generate forcefields to protect her allies and push back her opponents. Sue’s primary fires a small collection of darts, healing allies while damaging opponents. These darts don’t have any kind of tracking, requiring precise aim like Luna Snow. She also has a double jump which briefly turns her invisible after activation.
Invisible Woman has three core combat abilities at her disposal. The first is her Shift, Forceburst, which creates a forcefield on the battlefield which slows and damages any opponents caught within it. Then we have Sue’s E which allows her to either push or pull enemies with her forcefields, allowing her to shove enemies off ledges or bring them closer to her team.
There’s also her right click which generates a front-facing shield before a targeted ally, mitigating any damage which comes their way. This shield has 300 health and will go on a 6-second cooldown when destroyed.
- Forceburst Slows and Damages Opponents
- Push and Pull Enemies
- Shield Allies with Forcefields
- Ultimate Cloaks All Allies
Lastly, there’s Sue’s Ultimate, which is likely the strongest part of her kit. When cast, it generates a large circular AoE which cloaks any allies standing within it, making them invisible to the enemy while still allowing them to damage opponents outside of the dome. This means that Sue could reasonably cloak ally Ultimates from Iron Man or Scarlet Witch, making them far easier to pull off.
Similar to Reed, Sue is a very interesting addition to the Strategist roster as she does a lot more than just heal. By shielding her allies, she can play as a pseudo-tank while pushing and pulling the enemy to deny space. She also seems to have some sort of passive which makes her invisible after a few seconds of not being in combat, similar to Sombra’s old passive from Overwatch.
Alongside the kit reveals, we also got to see what Epic Shop Skins Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman will be launching with in Season 1. For Mister Fantastic, players will be able to purchase his iconic Maker skin, an alternative version of Reed who abandoned his morality for the sake of scientific advancement. Meanwhile, for the Invisible Woman, she’ll be dressed up as her darker Malice persona.
Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman will join Marvel Rivals as a new Duelist and Strategist when Season 1, Eternal Night Falls, launches on January 10th 2025.
