In the Silent Hill Transmission on March 13, 2025, Konami gave a first look at Silent Hill f, their new horror game and the main highlight of the broadcast. In this summary, we tell you the most notable points of the Silent Hill Transmission.
Silent Hill f is a brand new installment in the iconic horror franchise, developed by Neobards Entertainment and featuring a story written by Ryukishi07, renowned for his work on Higurashi When They Cry.
New trailer for Silent Hill f
The trailer introduced us to Hinako, a teenager facing various changes in her life in a small Japanese town.
Unlike previous installments of the series, which are set in the fictional town of Silent Hill in the United States, this installment moves the action to 1960s Japan.
This offers a new cultural and aesthetic perspective to the Silent Hill universe with a philosophy and artistic direction that seeks to find beauty in terror and terror in beauty.
New setting
As mentioned, the game is set in the 1960s in rural Japan, which influences its visual and musical style. Akira Yamaoka returns as composer, but his work will be tied to the world of fog.
The rest of the soundtrack will be handled by Kensuke Inage, known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series, providing a sound that evokes a more traditional Japan.
New art direction
The setting also influences the artistic direction, leaving behind the characteristic rusty aesthetic of the saga to adopt an approach more in line with the Japanese culture of the era.
The lycoris radiata flowers, native to Asia, stand out, appearing in large quantities in the trailer, at times blending with organic matter, reinforcing the idea of the beauty of terror and the terror of beauty.
Something similar was seen in Silent Hill: The Short Message. In that game, one of the characters describes the flowers she paints as representing girls overcoming their traumas.
Silent Hill as a concept beyond the physical
Throughout the series, Silent Hill has been presented as a real place, but also as a psychological manifestation of the fears and traumas of its characters.
In Silent Hill f, this duality is taken a step further, as the ‘psychological Silent Hill’ will manifest in a place not directly related to the physical town. This again reminds us of The Short Message, where the concept of the ‘Silent Hill phenomenon’ was introduced.
The return of Japanese horror
During the broadcast, there was an interview section with Ryukishi07, the game’s writer, and the composers Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage. In it, Ryukishi07 explained that Silent Hill f is an installment with a standalone story within the series. It is neither a reboot nor a non-canon game, but its plot is not directly related to previous installments.
Thanks to this creative freedom, the team decided to explore a new direction for Silent Hill, taking it back to its roots in a different way: immersing it in Japanese horror.
- Rural Japan of the 1960s – Silent Hill f.
- Foggy world covered in organic matter – Silent Hill f.
Although Silent Hill has always been a Japanese saga, this is the first time a game in the series is physically set in Japan. Undoubtedly, Silent Hill f is an intriguing title. Despite moving away from what we know of the franchise, it also feels like a return to its roots.
Unfortunately, Konami did not confirm a release date, but did announce that the game will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with the option to add it to the wishlist starting today.
Tell us in the comments: Are you looking forward to this game? What do you think about the new direction of the franchise?
