New Virtual Card System: Share Digital Games on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has announced in the latest Direct dedicated to the Switch 1 that, starting from the end of April, all consoles in the Nintendo Switch family will be able to enjoy a new feature. This feature will allow sharing digital games: virtual game cards.

These virtual game cards will function similarly to physical cartridges. Now, you will be able to manage your digital games as if they were physical games, registering them and transferring them between consoles using the same account. This means that you will be able to remove a game from one console and send it to another. To do this, it will be necessary to link the consoles via local communication the first time.

How to Share Digital Games on Nintendo Switch

To lend digital games to other Nintendo Switch consoles with different accounts, it will be necessary for both accounts, both the lending and the receiving one, to be in a family group, which can contain up to 8 members.

Once the consoles are connected via local communication, you can choose which account you want to lend the game to. This will register the virtual game card on the lending consoleand transfer it to the other. This will prevent you from playing it until it is returned.

The loan lasts for 14 days, after which the virtual game card will automatically return to your console. Saved games, on both consoles, are maintained despite not having the virtual game card.

You can lend a single game to each member of your family group. This means you’ll be able to share up to 7 games with different members of the same group.

Although there were already ways to ‘share’ games on Switch and other consoles, this is the first time we see a system that allows extracting a digital game from one account and offering it to another in a way similar to how physical games would be shared. Without a doubt, this feature is both curious and innovative, and it will surely be well received by Nintendo Switch players.

What do you think about this new feature? Will you use it to lend or borrow games? Let us know your opinion in the comments!
