It’s official: Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on May 26, 2026, postponing its initial launch during autumn 2025. The postponement is intended to give the development team more time to fine-tune the highly anticipated title and deliver the best possible experience for fans.
In a statement posted on Rockstar’s official news feed, the studio expressed its gratitude and transparency:
We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game. – Rockstar Games
GTA VI will take players to the fictional state of Leonida, heavily inspired by Florida, with the neon-lit streets of Vice City, a reimagined version of Miami, as its central location. The game will follow Lucia, the series’ first female protagonist, and her partner in crime as they navigate a modern-day outlaw story reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde.
Since the reveal of the game’s trailer in December 2023, Rockstar has remained tight-lipped about further details, but fan enthusiasm is as high as ever. Grand Theft Auto V, the previous installment, has remained one of the best-selling and most-played games of all time since its release over ten years ago.
The new release date could shake up the industry’s release schedule, as studios and publishers may seek to avoid launching titles close to the release of GTA VI, a game set to dominate the gaming landscape in 2026.
Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X . Rockstar has not yet confirmed a release date for the PC version.
