Oddities are important in Where Winds Meet to upgrade your character and unlock additional Mystic Art slots. There are five sources of oddities in Qinghe and five more in Kaifeng, and each has a unique collection method.
1. All Oddities and How to Collect Them In Where Winds Meet
Oddities are marked on the map with a butterfly-looking icon. Each of these items have a special way you need to interact to pick them up successfully; once in your inventory, they are called Life Materials.
2. All Life Materials in Qinghe
Qinghe is the first country you find yourself in at the beginning of the game. It contains five different types of oddities that are unique to this part of the map, and they are randomly scattered all around.
2.1 Ironwing Mantis
The first type of oddity in Qinghe is the Ironwing Mantis. This winged bug shows up on the ground, surrounded by purple sparkles. If you walk up to it, you will be able to observe it, which will make the bug run away.
How to get Ironwing Mantis
- Find the Ironwing Mantis, surrounded by purple sparkles.
- Observe it by pressing the interact button standing near it.
- The Mantis will jump away.
- Run after it.
- When it lands on the ground, you can press the interact button if you are close by and capture it.
2.2 Enchanting Lotus
Enchanting Lotus plants are extremely dangerous. They are surrounded by clouds of miasma that will poison you if you aren’t careful. You will need to clear it away before you can pick up the flower.
How to get Enchanting Lotus
- Use Wind Sense by holding down the right joystick on controller or press V on keyboard.
- Each blossom on the Enchanting Lotus will have a line of purple smoke leading away from it in Wind Sense.
- Follow each of the smoke lines; there will be a small cloud of purple butterflies at the end of each one.
- Using your bow and arrow, hit each of the butterflies.
- Continue until all the butterflies are gone.
- Collect the Lotus blooms now that the miasma is gone.
2.3 Redmist Beetle
If you find a glowing cluster of mushrooms on the ground, you have found a Redmist Beetle. If you look above the mushrooms, there will be a cluster of bugs directly above it.
How to get Redmist Beetle
- Locate the cluster of bugs flying above the glowing red mushrooms.
- Either jump up to it if you can or jump off a tall object nearby to reach it.
- Once you jump through it, you will collect the Redmist Beetle.
2.4 Dagger Generals
Dagger Generals are bugs that are hidden away. These crickets like to live under piles of jars, rocks, boxes, and other heavy items while singing you the song of their people.
How to get Dagger Generals
- Look for a pile of breakable stones, pottery, or other objects. They will be outlined in gold in Wind Sense.
- There will be sound coming from under it.
- Break the pile with your weapon.
- Quickly press the interact button while standing where the pile was.
- There can be multiple Dagger Generals under one pile.
2.5 Whisper Hives
Whisper Hives are the homes of extremely dangerous bees. If you get stung by one of these, you will need to find a healer in order to get rid of the poison. But their nests are valuable enough to risk it.
How to get Whisper Hives
- Whisper Hives are always in trees or hanging off the side of cliffs. They are never on the ground.
- Locate the Hive, but keep your distance.
- Using Fire Arrows, hit the nest directly.
- Climb the tree or cliff to collect the now-empty Hive.
3. All Life Materials in Kaifeng
After you have finished most of the story, you will find yourself in the country of Kaifeng across the river. This new country will have whole new oddities to collect with new methods.
3.1 Heartsoothe Twig
It’s easy to tell if the butterfly-like icon you are coming up on is a Heartsoothe Twig because it will be moving around. Keep your eye on it, and you will notice a pattern in how the Twig moves.
How to get Heartsoothe Twig
- When you reach the location of the Heartsoothe Twig, look up.
- You will find a gold, glittering bird flying in a distinct pattern.
- Patterns are usually back and forth over a straight line or in a square.
- Shoot the bird with an arrow.
- The bird will drop the item it is holding in its claws and fly away.
- Search for the item; it will glitter gold on the ground.
3.2 Moonbeam Toad
Moonbeam Toads are extremely fast-moving golden frogs. All you have to do is catch them; they will leave gold sparkles behind them as they run away.
3.3 Midnight Nibbler
Midnight Nibblers are rats that live under piles of boxes or stones. You will need to treat them just like you did the Dagger Generals.
How to get Midnight Nibblers
- The singing pile of crates, rocks, or other objects will appear gold in Wind Sense.
- Look for the sound lines coming out from underneath it.
- Break the pile with your weapon.
- Chase down the rats that come out from underneath the pile. There can be several of them in one pile.
- They are fast, but they glitter gold, making them easier to see.
3.4 Thunder Fluff
If you interact with the Thunder Fluff, it will throw its puffs into the air. You will need to chase them down before they land in order to collect them.
3.5 Swallow’s Rest
The Swallow’s Rest is just a nest left behind by a swallow. When you walk up to the bird, it will abandon its nest, allowing you to pick it up and use it upgrade your Melodies of Peace.
How to Upgrade Memories of Peace at the Oddity Exchange
The Memories of Peace is a skill tree that can only be upgraded at the Oddity Exchanges. These are marked on the map by a butterfly icon surrounded by a white circle. You must use Qinghe Life Materials to unlock the Melodies of Peace from Qinghe, and Kaifeng oddities for its skill tree.
