After progressing through the main Care Center area in Resident Evil: Requiem as Grace, you’ll automatically enter the Care Center Basement once you complete the preceding story objectives and reach the transition point at the lower level of the facility.
The Basement is a dark, dangerous area beneath the Rhodes Hill Care Center filled with stronger infected, environmental hazards, and key power puzzles. Your primary mission here is to collect three Joint Plugs and use them on the assigned sockets to unlock the Holding Cells and free Emily.
1. First Joint Plug
Enter the Care Center Basement after progressing through the Rhodes Hill Care Center. Move forward into the lit hallway. You’ll soon reach the Security Room (safe area with a save point and item box). Use this as your base.
1.1. Head Toward the Holding Cells
- Leave the Security Room and proceed straight through the basement corridors.
- You will come to the Holding Cells area. Head in — a short cutscene will play showing the locked cells and generator.
- After the cutscene, the First Joint Plug will automatically be added to your inventory.
1.2. Optional Item/Files Nearby
Near the Holding Cells entrance, you can grab the file “Staff Member’s Last Words” from a corpse — this is a collectible but not required for progression.
2. Second Joint Plug
After grabbing the First Joint Plug in the Holding Cells, backtrack through the basement corridors to reach the Security Room (safe room) where you first entered the basement.
2.1. Use the Joint Plug to Open the Boiler Room
Take the First Joint Plug with you and insert it into the power distributor slot near the corridor just past the save room. This restores power and unlocks the Boiler Room door.
2.2. Get Square Socket Wrench
Now that power has been restored to the Boiler Room, you can enter, navigate through it, and obtain a key tool needed for further progression. This section walks through that process in sequence.
- Open the now‑powered Boiler Room door and step inside cautiously. This area is tighter and more confined than the earlier corridors, so watch for enemies emerging from shadows.
- As you enter, you’ll notice a large crate blocking part of your path forward. Push the crate to the side to create a gap just large enough to squeeze through.
- Once the path is clear, crawl through the small opening and continue deeper into the Boiler Room interior. T
- Locate the Square Socket Wrench on a workbench in the Boiler Room. Pick it up — this tool will be essential later when interacting with machinery and vent mechanisms.

After securing the tool, turn around and retrace your steps out of the Boiler Room. You will be heading back toward the Holding Cells corridor.
2.3. Get to the Workshop
With the Square Socket Wrench obtained, your next tasks are to collect a helpful consumable and then use the Joint Plug once more to reach the next major area where the Second Joint Plug is located.
- While returning to the main corridor, take a moment to enter the Bunkroom located off the hallway leading back to the safe room. This room is small but offers a useful combat item.
- Pick up the Molotov Cocktail inside the Bunkroom. It’s a powerful throwable that will help clear groups of smaller enemies or stagger larger threats later on.
- Next, move back toward the Holding Cells area and find the path leading to the Furnace room on the left side of the corridor. The furnace area remains locked until power is applied.
- Insert the First Joint Plug into the power socket in the Furnace area. This restores electricity, opens doors, and allows access to a vent leading deeper into the basement.
- Enter the Furnace room and approach the vent opening on the wall.
- Crawl through the vent — this passage leads directly into the Workshop, an area that contains your next objective.
- Once inside the Workshop, locate and pick up the Second Joint Plug. It is near the power distributor or on a table; interact with it to add it to your inventory and update your mission objective.
- After obtaining the Second Joint Plug, turn around and make your way down from the Holding Cells area toward the Collection Pool.
3. Third Joint Plug
This section covers powering the Collection Pool, getting the Forklift Key, and preparing to move deeper into the Processing area, where the Third Joint Plug is located.
3.1. Power the Collection Pool
- Head to the Collection Pool area through the hallway south of the Holding Cells after collecting the first two Joint Plugs (from the Holding Cells and Furnace).
- In the Collection Pool room’s generator, use the Square Socket Wrench (from the Boiler Room) on the control console, then insert both Joint Plugs into the sockets. This restores power and turns on the lights, unlocking a door at the far end.
- Proceed forward to the vent opening in the floor or wall. This vent leads onward toward the Processing area. Crouch and crawl into it to move forward.
3.2. Get Forklift Key
- After crawling through the vent, you’ll emerge in the Processing area. Walk forward along the corridor until you reach the main room.
- On the floor near a forklift, you will find the Forklift Key. Pick it up — you’ll use this key shortly to open blocked paths deeper into the basement.
- Approach the forklift machine and use the Forklift Key on it to move the forklift obstacle, which reveals a door. Go inside to inspect the area and collect items like the Basement floor map or an inventory upgrade if available.
Note: There is another Joint Plug attached to a power distributor in the Processing room, but you cannot remove it yet — doing so would trap you here with no powered exit. Leave it in place for now.
3.3. Get to Inspection Room
Before going for the Third Joint Plug, you’ll need to return to the Furnace and Inspection sections with tools and keys.
- Exit Processing the way you came, back toward the Collection Pool.
- Reclaim the two Joint Plugs you placed in the Collection Pool generator to turn on the lights. You’ll need them again to power things later.
- Head back to the Furnace area and insert one Joint Plug into the furnace’s generator if it isn’t already powered.
- Continue onward into the Inspection area — be cautious, as The Girl can appear in dark or unlit places if power is not restored.
In the Inspection room, search for a room with hanging cadavers and blocked machinery. Here, you need to manipulate controls to alter the movement of the hanging bodies so you can pass safely.
3.4. Drain the Pool
Once you have a path cleared, move through toward the opposite side of the Processing chamber. This leads you toward the pool area where the Third Joint Plug awaits.
- At the raised area near part of the Processing pool, you will find a wheel or valve mechanism. Rotate the wheel to drain the pool, lowering the liquid level and opening access further into the room.
- Descend the pool area, making your way through the empty conveyor belt section. In this sequence, enemies rise from the drained water — prioritize shooting them in the head or using melee to knock them toward the conveyor grinder.
- Once the mechanical sequence ends and the ladder becomes accessible, climb up the opposite side near the end of the Processing chamber.
- At this point, you’ll find the Third Joint Plug waiting for you. Pick it up to add it to your inventory.
3.5. Get Back to Holding Cell & Escape
After obtaining the Third Joint Plug, you’ll need to return to safer areas before final escape and rescue.
- Exit Processing via a nearby ventilation shaft — there should be a crawl space near a typewriter or save point that leads back toward the lower level of the Collection Pool.
- On the way back, flip the Collection & Testing switch near the bottom of the Collection Pool if you want to collect Infected Blood for crafting (optional).
- Use the elevator near the Collection Pool to return to the Security Room, then make sure all three Joint Plugs are in your inventory before continuing.
- Insert all three Joint Plugs into the power distributor in the Holding Cells to restore full electrical power and trigger a cutscene where Emily is freed.
After the cutscene, a scripted escape sequence begins. Run with Emily to the elevator, complete required QTEs, and fend off The Girl as needed — plan to shoot or avoid her during the elevator escape.
