Advanced Power Leveling Tips from the Community
One of our readers shared a detailed strategy in the comments that sheds more light on how Oblivion’s skill XP system truly works. Contrary to popular belief, not all skill uses are equal — XP gained scales with the magnitude of the action. For example:
- Jumping from high places trains Acrobatics significantly faster than short jumps.
- Spells that consume more Magicka provide more XP per cast.
- Destruction XP is based on actual damage dealt, not just spell usage.
- Healing large amounts of damage trains Restoration faster than frequent small heals.
Based on this, the reader recommends the following optimized power-leveling loop:
- Start by gathering hundreds of magicka restoration ingredients (e.g., flax seeds near Kvatch).
- Craft ~1000 potions to reach 100 Alchemy and stock up on Restore Magicka potions.
- Create powerful custom spells at Frostcrag Spire and spam them on yourself using the potions.
- Use Conjuration to summon high-cost creatures repeatedly, and blast them with Destruction spells.
- Jump from heights for Acrobatics XP and heal the fall damage with Restoration.
- Repair your armor while doing all this to level Armorer.
This method, when optimized, can level your character to 100 in multiple skills within a few hours. The user even claims they raised Illusion from 75 to 100 in just 5 minutes using high-cost spells and potion stacking.
You can read the full comment and breakdown in the comment below.
Caywyn
This article gets a lot right but misses one key fact that changes a number of key conclusions. That is that not all skill uses are equal. Skills rank up more for greater uses of the skills. For example, I was able to get illusion from 75 to 100 which is typically the slowest level ups compared to earlier ranks, in about 5 minutes last night.
To speed level a character I would:
First, spend a couple hours gathering potion ingredients, boring I know, but this is the leg work the rest will be based on. Focus on magicka restoration ingredients. I find the easiest to be flax seeds, which you can find northwest of skingrad, north/northwest of Kvatch and because to start with you’ll need a second ingredient, the blue/green mushrooms, which I find particularly plentiful northeast of the imperial city, before you get to the snowy areas. Focus on those but grab every ingredient as you’ll want enough to make 1000 or so potions. Should be enough to get you to rank 100. The good news here is that you’ll still be leveling at “normal” rates as you fight stuff and run around. You can do a little bit to speed things up, such as maximizing athletics and acrobatics but it’s nothing to what you’ll see later. To maximize athletics and acrobatics though, run up hill and jump downhill. Again, not all skill uses are equal. Running we can do much about, you want your feet in contact with the ground for as much distance as you can, so might as well run up those hills. Acrobatics though, rank up based on the vertical height traveled. Jump up the hill and it will be a quick jump, but you’ll get next to no progress towards a rank. Jump off the roof of Frostcrag and you’ll gain a ton comparatively (of course make sure you have enough health). With that in mind. The best way to maximize leveling the two is to run, except when you can jump and fall far, the more damage (as long as it doesn’t kill you) the better. As a bonus, you’ve now created damage to heal with restoration, which will probably be the biggest source of leveling at this point. Also make sure you keep repair hammers on you so you can repair armor as you go and boost your armorer skill.
Once you have your ingredients, it’s time to make potions. I made feather potions first, because they’re handy especially early on, then restore magicka potions. Once you run out of those ingredients, just make anything else you can (don’t forget poisons) until you get to 100. There’s probably a way to maximize alchemy leveling, but it doesn’t really matter since we’ll want around 500 restore magicka potions, maybe a few more, so we need to make a ton of potions. Once you get to 100, if you don’t have enough restore magicka potions, you can make them with a single ingredient so just go grab some more flax seeds. They’re everywhere north of kvatch.
Sell all of the potions you don’t need, that should give a good amount of gold and mercantile boost. From there, go get Frostcrag so you can make spells. If you need more gold, I suggest making more potions. Now it’s time to rank up magic skills. At Frostcrag, create the biggest magicka sucking skills you can cast on yourself. Keeping in mind, skills that cost more give you more progress towards ranking up the skill than those that take a little. Cast them lots of times quickly by consuming your magicka restoration potions you made, keeping in mind that they stack, so you can use multiple to regenerate magicka faster. Once you hit a higher rank (25,50,75) make a bigger magicka consuming skill. As you level up, put skill points into stats to increase magicka and health (more magicka means bigger spells and more health means you can heal more).
For destruction and conjuration which can’t really be cast on yourself. Conjure big creatures, you can spam this too, you don’t have to wait for them to disappear. For destruction, the more damage you do, the faster the rank up. Make sure you’ve conjured big creatures and attack them with big destruction spells. Destruction rank up is based on damage done, not magicka used. Meaning, if you cast the spell but hit nothing, it won’t give you anything. When you do this, the creature will attack you which will help you rank up armorer by repairing armor, and heavy and light armor when you’re attacked as well as restoration to heal.
Cast an illusion spell that costs 200 magicka and you’ll get a rank up even in the high 90’s after only a handful of casts. You can do this in 5-10 seconds by consuming multiple restore magicka potions.
A few things to keep in mind:
1. Spells must hit a target to count.
2. If for whatever reason you can’t cast a spell on yourself but can cast it on another, like charm, you can always cast it on a guard, as long as it isn’t hostile.
3. You don’t have to wait for a spell to wear off before casting it again.
4. As far as I know, all skills are based on the size of that use. Dealing more damage ranks up a skill more, falling further ranks up a skill more, healing more ranks up a skill more.
5. Around level 20 leveling slows down a lot. Around 30 it slows down a TON.
6. Major skills count more towards a level than minor, but minor skills count too.
7. High level skill rank ups count more towards a level up than low. If I had to guess, I’d say that ranks 85-100 in a minor skill give you as much of a level up progress in the mid 30’s as 5-90 does. Or roughly there about.
8. I’ve been playing for fun too, but Xbox says I’ve got 1 day 21 hours in to get to level 35. If you account for the time I’ve taken to figure stuff out (though I had a head start as I played a ton of morrowind back in the day which worked the same), put the game on pause but left it open while I ran an errand or did stuff around the house, I think you could reasonably use this process to hit level 20-25 in probably 20 hours. I’m sure it could be done a lot faster if done as optimal as possible, but I’m talking average Joe following these steps.
If the author wants to try any of these or update the article to include any, that’s totally fine by me, just providing this to try to help everyone!
