No Rest For the Wicked – Beginner’s Guide To Help You Get Started

New to No Rest For the Wicked? Master survival, progression, and combat with beginner's guide to help in the plague-ridden world of Sacrament. Learn to gather resources, unlock town upgrades, playing Co-Op and fight mini-bosses efficiently while building a strong foundation for your character.

no rest for wicked beginner's guideNo Rest for the Wicked is a punishing rogue‑lite action RPG that blends deliberate melee combat, deep exploration, rune‑based abilities, and persistent world progression — especially with the Together co‑op update. You play as a Cerim in the plague‑ravaged land of Isola Sacra, where decisions matter and every mechanic ties into survival and growth.

1. Collect Materials Early and Often

chests

Chests

Resource gathering is fundamental to progression in No Rest for the Wicked. Nearly every system — weapon and armor upgrades, crafting consumables, building projects, and durability management — requires materials gathered from the world. This makes exploration, not just combat, core to your success.

1.1 Essential Gathering Tools

Before you venture far, you should obtain four key gathering tools:

  • Woodcutter’s Axe: Required to chop down trees for wood.
  • Pickaxe: Used to mine copper and iron ore from glowing ore veins.
  • Shovel: Used on glowing dig spots to unearth clay and buried materials.
  • Fishing Rod: Used at water sources to catch fish for healing food.

These tools are found by looting chests, dropped by enemies, and in the early shore area, you can find Woodcutter’s Axe and Pickaxe by opening chests. After reaching Sacrament, tools can be purchased from the Blacksmith Fillmore and Whittacker for upgraded tiers. Once in your inventory, tools allow you to collect the necessary resources wherever you find them.

1.2 Key Resource Types and Uses

  • Wood is chopped from trees with your Woodcutter’s Axe. Different regions yield different wood types such as Pine and Spruce, and wood is required not only for building projects in Sacrament but also for crafting and weapon upgrades.
  • Ore (Copper & Iron) is mined using your Pickaxe. Copper is common early, while Iron appears in more advanced zones. Metals are vital for upgrading weapons, armor, and tools to higher tiers. Higher‑tier equipment dramatically increases power and survivability.
  • Clay is rarer and used almost exclusively for building projects in Sacrament. Use your Shovel on dig spots to collect it, and make sure you don’t miss any while exploring because clay is often the gating resource for major constructions.
  • Plants & Food Ingredients like herbs, mushrooms, berries, and apples appear as glowing pickups and are used mainly for cooking food at bonfires. Food is your primary source of healing during exploration and boss fights.
  • Animal Parts & Meat are dropped by wildlife and smaller enemies and are also used in food preparation for stronger healing meals.
  • Fish are caught with your Fishing Rod at water bodies and are among the best ingredients for cooked healing dishes.

Because your inventory fills quickly, always return to Sacrament to deposit extras into town storage before heading out again — this prevents clutter and loss on death.

2. Reach Sacrament – Your Main Hub City

no rest for wicked gameplay

No Rest For Wicked gameplay

Sacrament is the central hub of the game. Unlocking it is part of the main “Sacrament” storyline and grants access to vendors, crafting stations, quests, fast travel, building projects, and durability services.

2.1 How to Reach Sacrament

Map to get to Sacrament

Map to get to Sacrament

After the prologue, you begin on The Shallows. Here’s the correct sequence to reach Sacrament:

  1. Speak with Captain Talvic near the shore to start the main quest.
  2. Follow the marked path until you encounter a sealed gate blocking the way.
  3. Head south to locate a corpse with the Mess Hall Key.
  4. Continue forward to Mariner’s Keep and clear the enemies around Fillmore.
  5. Obtain the Gate Lever Handle from Fillmore’s area and install it at the sealed gate.
  6. Progress through the gates and defeat Warrick the Torn, your first major boss.
  7. Cross the long stone bridge to enter Sacrament’s gates.
  8. After the cutscene, speak with Governor Ellsworth to officially unlock Sacrament as your base.

Once unlocked, Sacrament remains your permanent base and fast travel hub.

2.2 How Building Projects Work

building projects

Building projects

Town construction is a crucial progression system that unlocks vendors, crafting stations, quality‑of‑life improvements, and advanced features. Ignoring buildings severely slows your growth. After reaching Sacrament:

  1. Speak with Danos the Builder in the town square.
  2. Choose Building Projects from his dialogue options.
  3. Contribute required materials (wood, ore, clay) to begin a project.
  4. Upgrade projects to higher tiers for better rewards and advanced services.

Projects complete even while you are offline or adventuring in a Realm.

2.2.2 Best Early Projects to Prioritize

Merchants location

Merchants location

Certain projects unlock must‑have systems early:

  1. Filmore’s Smithy: Filmore’s Smithy is the backbone of early progression. Once restored, Filmore becomes your primary source for weapon and armor maintenance, which is essential because durability loss is punishing early on.
  2. Eleanor’s Enchantment Shop: Eleanor’s shop introduces enchantment systems, allowing you to enhance weapons and armor with stat-altering effects. This is where builds start to take shape rather than relying purely on base item drops.
  3. Whittacker’s Crafting Shack: Whittacker’s shack unlocks the ability to craft consumables and utility items that dramatically improve survivability and flexibility during exploration.
  4. Grinnich’s General Goods: Grinnich provides consistent access to basic supplies, removing the need to hunt endlessly for essentials.
  5. Gordon’s Pantry: Food plays a large role in survival and preparation. Gordon’s Pantry improves access to food-related items that support exploration and extended combat.
  6. Ilaria’s Sanctum: This project is build-specific but extremely important if you plan to use unarmed or fist-based builds.
  7. Mira and Meri’s Tailor Shop: The Tailor Shop supports armor-focused builds and provides access to improved gear options that favor survivability and stat balance.
  8. Danos’ Architecture Study: This project contributes to structural and progression systems tied to Sacrament’s development. Use to upgrade Scribe Table to Adept Scribe Table and rolling advanced blueprints.
  9. Caroline’s Inn: Caroline’s Inn provides comfort and convenience features rather than direct power, gives Rest bonuses, XP boost, and quests.

Completing these early ensures vendors, repair services, and crafting tools are available quickly.

3. Weapon and Armor Upgrades

Gear progression in No Rest for the Wicked is multi‑layered, involving stat upgrades, randomized enchantment systems, ember modifiers, gem infusions, and exalting once you reach endgame content. At the Smithy in Sacrament, you can perform Item Tier Upgrades which increase base weapon damage or armor rating — this is separate from enchantments.

  • Upgrade weapons and armor using materials, copper coins in the early tier, and silver in higher tiers.
  • Increase their tier level (Tier 1 → Tier 2 → Tier 3).
  • Improve their damage/defense as well as unlock their higher enchantment potential.

Each piece can be upgraded multiple times, typically filling a tier meter until it reaches max Tier 3. Higher‑tier gear is substantially more powerful than simply leveling up your character.

3.1 Gear Enchantment

Gear Enchantment

Gear Enchantment

To truly maximize your gear, you must combine Fillmore’s upgrades with Eleanor the Enchanter’s services. Be careful about upgrading Fillmore’s shop too early. If you boost his shop to Level 3 while your character is still Level 10, the gear he sells may have stat requirements (like 26 Strength) that you cannot meet.

Method NPC Effect Result
Upgrading Fillmore Increases base stats & Tier Higher Raw Damage / Defense
Enchanting Eleanor Randomizes rarity (Rare/Cursed) Adds powerful passive affixes
Infusing Eleanor Slots a Gem into the item Adds Elemental or Utility stats
Runes Eleanor Slots a special move into a weapon Unlocks new active combat skills

3.2 Collect Fallen Embers

Fallen Embers lets you reroll enchantments for your gear and is one of the most important materials in the game, and is the backbone of enchantment done at Eleanor. You can find this material from chests, killing enemies, and buying from vendors. There are different ember types with distinct effects:

Uses of All Embers

  • Corrupting Ember – Turns a common item into Plagued rarity.
  • Awakening Ember – Turns common into Magical (blue) rarity.
  • Radiant Ember – Boosts the power of a particular enchantment (i.e., increases the numeric value of an effect).
  • Essence Ember – Extracts a specific enchantment from an item and destroys the source item, creating a Charged Essence Ember you can apply elsewhere.
  • Sublime Ember – Used to exalt items (endgame step).
  • Void Ember – Reverts an enchanted item back to common rarity.

3.3 Gem Infusion

Gem Infusment

Gem Infusment

Gems add passive bonuses (e.g., resistances, stat boosts) that stack with enchantments.

  • Infusing a gem provides consistent desired effects, unlike random enchantment rolls.
  • Infusion is done at Eleanor’s enchantment interface in Sacrament.
  • Gem bonuses do not replace enchantments — they augment them where socket slots exist.

4. Co‑Op Gameplay (Together Update)

Co‑op in No Rest For the Wicked arrives with the Together update as a persistent multiplayer system where up to four players share a Realm and progress together. Your world state, vendor levels, cleared enemies, quests, and unlocked content persist for everyone in the Realm — not just the host.

4.1 How to Make a Co-op Realm

  1. Open Realm Menu – From the main menu, go to the Realms tab to start co‑op.
  2. Create a Realm – Choose a Realm name and preferred difficulty (Standard, Challenging, or Path of the Unspoken) before inviting friends.
  3. Invite Friends – Invite up to 3 Steam friends to your Realm; friends must accept via the Steam overlay.
  4. Join a Realm – Accept an invite, select your character, and enter the shared Realm; you can bring an existing character without starting fresh.

4.2 How Shared Progression Works

  • World State Persists – Cleared enemies, opened doors, defeated bosses, vendors unlocked, and town building projects remain completed for everyone.
  • Vendor Upgrades Stay – Vendor tiers and refreshed inventories benefit all players and carry across sessions.
  • Crafting Progress Carries Over – Recipe discoveries and crafting unlocks remain available to all Realm members.
  • Quest Progress Is Shared – Story and side quests completed by any player count for the whole group.

4.3 Enemy Scaling & Combat Behavior

Cyvian the Echo Night

Cyvian the Echo Night

  • Enemies Scale With Players – Enemy health, damage, aggression, and spawn rates increase based on party size. 2 Players: +15% damage, +20% health, 3 Players: +20% damage, +25% health, and 4 Players: +30% damage, +35% health.
  • AI Behavior Adapts – Enemies coordinate better, flank players, retreat to regroup, and target multiple players more intelligently than in solo.
  • Bosses Are Tougher – Expect bosses to act more aggressively in co‑op; positioning and timing matter more than solo.

4.4 Team Coordination & Roles

  • Divide Roles – Assign tasks like gathering, crafting, tank/frontline combat, or ranged support before runs to streamline progression.
  • Set Shared Goals – Agree on weekly Realm objectives (e.g., vendor upgrades, unlocking crafting paths).
  • Position in Combat – Avoid crowding; flank enemies and let melee handle frontline roles while ranged supports cover from safety.

4.5 Loot & Trading

  • Loot Belongs to the Player Who Picks It Up – Gear and items are not instanced per player but are awarded to whoever picks them up first.
  • Fair Trading System – Use the in‑game trade window to give weapons or materials to teammates who need them.
  • Coordinate Loot Rules – For co-op lobbies, after big fights and bosses share rare loot drops with your team to have seamless progression.

4.6 Shared Resurrection System

  • Reviving – Downed players can be revived by teammates with a life cost; plan who will revive during combat.
  • Grace Period – After a revive, there is a short grace period before players re‑enter combat, so pick safe spots for resurrection.

5. Together Update New Systems

sacrament

Sacrament

The Together update adds several major systems that change how endgame, combat, crafting, and gear work together.

5.1 Compendium Feature

The Compendium is your in-game reference hub that tracks all tutorials, items, enemies, runes, quests, and story content. It ensures that new and returning players can quickly access information without searching the world or relying on memory. In co-op, it also shares knowledge with all Realm members, making coordination and progression smoother.

  • Use the Compendium – Open the Compendium from the menu to revisit tutorials, review quest dialogues, rewatch cutscenes, browse the item catalog, and study enemy behavior.
  • Rewatch Content – Story sequences any player-triggered are available for all Realm members to rewatch at any time.

5.2 Weapon Facets System

Weapon Facets add strategic depth to combat by giving weapons and armor unique modifiers that change their behavior. Choosing the right Facets for your build can drastically improve your effectiveness in melee, ranged, or rune-based combat. Facets cannot be changed once rolled, so selecting gear carefully is crucial.

  • Receive Facets on Gear – Weapons and armor may roll with unique Facets, innate modifiers that change how the item behaves (e.g., attack speed vs damage trade‑offs).
  • Cannot Change Facets – Once a Facet is on an item, it cannot be altered; choose items with desirable facets for your build.

5.3 Enchantment & Exalting Changes

The Enchantment and Exalting systems now scale with your gear’s level, allowing for more meaningful progression. Properly enchanting and exalting weapons and armor can significantly improve damage, survivability, and rune efficiency.

  • Level‑Scaled Enchantments – Enchantments now scale with item level; higher‑level gear gets automatically better rolls.
  • Exalting System Overhaul – To exalt, items must be fully upgraded with all enchantment and gem slots filled; exalting boosts one random stat by 50%, which can stack on subsequent exalts.

5.4 Refinery & Scribe Research

The Refinery and Scribe systems expand crafting depth, allowing you to process raw materials into advanced components and unlock new recipes. Mastering these systems is essential for building powerful gear, consumables, and runes efficiently, especially in co-op, where materials can be shared.

  • Refinery Mechanics – Process raw materials using refinery fuel for advanced crafting components.
  • Scribe Table Research – Study materials and items to unlock transformations and recipe expansions beyond normal crafting.

5.5 Bow & Quiver Mechanics

Bow Attacks

Bow Attacks

Bows are now main-hand weapons with their own unique attacks, roll behaviors, and synergy with Quivers. Quivers modify arrow effects and add strategic versatility to ranged combat.

  • Bows as Main‑Hand Weapons – Bows are no longer off‑hand items; each has unique attacks, ranged playstyles, and roll attacks.
  • Equip Quivers – Attach Quivers to modify arrow effects (explosive, frosted, lightning, blighted).
  • New Bow Runes – Slot bow runes to enhance ranged attacks such as Skyfall Shot, Glideburst, Skyburst Volley, Retreating Shot, and Skybreaker.
  • Coordinate Shots in Co-Op – Assign ranged roles to maximize elemental effects and crowd control in group fights.

5.6 Combat Status Effect Expansion

  • New Status Effects – Lifesteal, healing reduction, simultaneous ailments, Searing, Overload, and Fester add complexity to fights.
  • Backstab Mechanics – Enemies can now be backstabbed, adding a positional layer to combat.

5.7 Difficulty & Realm Options

  • Standard Mode – Balanced for new players and casual co‑op.
  • Challenging Mode – Increases enemy damage and aggression for experienced teams.
  • Path of the Unspoken – Hardcore mode with high risk and higher rewards; coordinate with your team before selecting.

5.8 Key Multiplayer Changes

  • Proximity Party System – Players near each other form a party group, affecting enemy scaling.
  • Trading & Inspection – Open trade windows to swap gear and inspect items with teammates.
  • Friendly Fire Enabled – Friendly fire is on but damage is reduced compared to solo hits; watch your positioning.
  • Shared Storage Controls – Assign guest permissions and chest access controls for shared inventory in Realms.

6. Spells and Runes

Unlike traditional RPGs, your spell abilities in No Rest for the Wicked come from Runes — magical items that grant unique abilities when slotted into a weapon. Runes unlock powerful tools such as healing, teleportation, focus management, and utility effects like repairing gear.

6.1 What are Runes

Runes are consumable items that confer active abilities to weapons. Most weapons come with at least one Rune already slotted, but weapons usually have up to four Rune slots. Rare and Plagued (very high rarity) weapons tend to have fewer slots but stronger passive bonuses.

6.2 Where to Get Runes

Combat

Combat

  • Loot from weapons you find in chests or dropped by enemies.
  • Purchasing from Eleanor the Enchanter in Sacrament once she appears.
  • Extracting runes from weapons at Eleanor’s shop — but be cautious, because extracting a Rune destroys the weapon from which you extract.

Eleanor’s inventory expands when her stall is upgraded via town projects, giving access to more Runes as you progress.

6.3 How to Equip and Use Runes

  1. Talk to Eleanor in Sacrament’s market area.
  2. Open the Rune tab in her dialogue.
  3. Select the weapon with an available Rune slot.
  4. Choose the Rune you want to equip.

NOTE: Extracting a Rune permanently destroys the weapon it was in, so only extract Runes from weapons you don’t plan to use.

To use runes in combat:

  • Hold Right Mouse Button (or right bumper on controller).
  • Press 1–4 to activate the corresponding Runes.
  • Each Rune shows a Focus cost — you must have enough Focus to cast.

6.3.1 Focus and Spellcasting

Focus is the orange bar above your health. It fills naturally as you inflict damage on enemies. For every 100 Focus points, you gain another Focus bar. Higher Focus increases how often you can cast Runes.

6.4 Important Runes and Their Uses

Utility Runes

Utility Runes

Here are the key Runes you should consider as a new player. These provide utility and survival support in addition to combat:

  • Pulse of Health: Pulse of Health allows you to instantly heal a portion of your HP at the cost of Focus. This is extremely helpful when food is low or you need emergency recovery during fights.
  • Heal Aura: Heal Aura summons an area effect around you that restores health over time to you and nearby allies (in co‑op). This is powerful when preparing for boss fights or regrouping after a tough skirmish.
  • Channel: Channel enhances your next attack by converting a portion of your health into additional Focus. This can boost damage in clutch moments.
  • Return: Return teleports you back to the last Cerim Whisper (your last checkpoint). This can be lifesaving when far from town or supplies.
  • Repair: The Repair Rune is one of the most useful utility Runes. It repairs durability to your equipped weapons, armor, and tools without returning to a blacksmith. This conserves resources and saves time during longer runs.

Unlike consumables like Repair Powder, which are random drops, the Repair Rune offers consistent durability restoration as long as you have enough Focus to use it.

7. Gear Durability and Repair Systems

All gear (weapons, armor, and tools) has durability that depletes through use or when you die. Items at zero durability become unequippable until repaired.

7.1 Traditional Repair via Blacksmith

Smithy

Smithy

Once you free Fillmore from captivity early in the story (Mariner’s Keep), he offers repair services. Initially, he repairs for free while located in the field. After you bring him to Sacrament and build his smithy, repairs cost silver depending on how much durability you restore.

7.2 How to Use Repair Rune

Using the Repair Rune from Eleanor lets you restore durability in the field at the cost of Focus, reducing unnecessary trips back to town and keeping your gear battle-ready. Buy the Repair Rune from Eleanor and slot it in your main weapon build because durability loss compounds over time; this rune is a must‑have early utility slot.

8. Use Plague Ichor for Permanent Upgrades

plague ichor

Plague Ichor

Plague Ichor is one of the rarest and most valuable progression items. It unlocks permanent upgrades for your character, primarily focused on inventory and equipment capacity.

8.1 Where to Find Plague Ichor

Plague Ichor drops from major bosses and certain high‑value mini‑boss encounters. This includes story bosses such as:

  • Warrick the Torn – Appears at the end of the Prologue, outside the town gates of Sacrament.
  • Falstead Darak – Has multiple encounters during the “Of Rats and Raiders” questline and defeating rewards with Plague Ichor.
  • The Riven Twins – Fought during the “Servant of God” quest, near the end of Nameless Pass.

Crucible enemies like Echo Knight (and similar boss‑grade elite enemies) also drop Plague Ichor when defeated, even outside the main story path. Enter the Stone Mason’s shop to reach the Crucible area and enter the dungeon.

You can also obtain Ichor from Captain Randolph’s Weekly Bounty targets. Weekly bounties refresh in real‑time and often involve elite enemies that drop Ichor.

An advanced method is to create a new Realm, run to the first boss (Warrick), get Ichor, and reset. Because realms persist progression and characters stay intact, this is a repeatable way to gather Ichors quickly.

8.2 Where to Spend Plague Ichor

Once you have Plague Ichor, take it to The Watcher at the Rookery Tower in Sacrament. Here you can trade Ichor for permanent upgrades in multiple categories:

  • +5 Gear Inventory Slots
  • +5 Item Inventory Slots
  • +5 Resource Inventory Slots
  • +5 Misc Inventory Slots
  • +1 Main‑hand Slot
  • +1 Off‑hand Slot
  • +1 Ring Slot
  • +1 Tool Slot

Each Ichor grants one upgrade selection. A total of 19 Ichors is required to unlock every inventory and equipment expansion.

Tip: Early on, invest in Resource Inventory Slots so you can carry more materials and reduce frequent trips to the market.

9. How to Farm XP Efficiently

You get XP by defeating enemies and completing quests like weekly bounties. If you find yourself under-leveled or under-geared for tougher areas like Nameless Pass or the Crucible, the most reliable way to catch up is by completing bounties for Captain Randolph.

Captain Randolph can be found in Sacrament, positioned near the Whisper, and serves as the game’s primary source of repeatable progression content. Captain Randolph offers several types of objectives:

  • Daily Bounties – Short, repeatable tasks that refresh regularly and are ideal for steady XP gains.
  • Weekly Bounties – Larger objectives that take longer to complete but offer better equipment rewards.
  • Challenges – More demanding tasks designed to test your build and combat readiness.

Each completed bounty rewards you with gear drops and progression materials. Even if the equipment doesn’t fit your current build, it still holds value — unwanted items can be sold for currency, helping you fund repairs, enchantments, and crafting.

Gaining XP in No Rest For the Wicked is crucial for leveling up, earning stat points, and progressing your character safely. XP comes from multiple sources — defeating enemies, completing quests, mini-bosses, and using consumables or buffs to increase gains. Enemies, resources and chests will reset after one in-game hour, so it’s best to farm them over again for multiple XP.

9.1 Primary XP Sources

no rest for wicked cutscene

No Rest For Wicked cutscene

  • Enemy Kills: Most standard enemies drop XP based on their strength. Stronger mobs in zones like Nameless Pass, Orban Glades, and The Shallows yield more XP. Elite enemies or mini-bosses always drop higher XP (around 500–1000 each).
  • Quests: Main story quests grant XP proportional to difficulty and objectives. Side quests often reward smaller XP amounts but are much faster to complete. Weekly bounties are repeatable quests that give high XP and occasionally rare materials or Plague Ichor.
  • Mini-Bosses Mini-boss encounters like those in Nameless Pass drop ≈1000 XP each. These are excellent for quick XP farming if you know their spawn locations and mechanics. Plan by bringing healing items and repair tools — mini-boss fights can damage equipment quickly.
  • XP Potions Small, Medium, and Large XP Potions provide incremental XP boosts when consumed. Small: ~500 XP, Medium: ~1000 X,P Large: ~2500 XP. Potions can be looted from rare chests, elite enemies, or bought from vendors like Caroline’s Inn after upgrades. Use them strategically during boss runs or long dungeon clears to maximize efficiency.

9.2 Realm Farming Strategy

Combat

Combat

A unique feature of No Rest For the Wicked is Realm farming, which allows you to reset enemy spawns and loot while keeping your character progression intact.

  • Creating a New Realm: From Sacrament, use the Realm Console or Rookery interface to generate a new Realm. All enemies and loot respawn, but your character stats, runes, and permanent upgrades remain.
  • XP Repetition: Fight high-level enemies again for XP without losing progression.
  • Resource Farming: Re-farm bosses or rare areas for materials, Plague Ichor, or weapons.
  • Bounty Farming: Complete weekly bounties multiple times on the same Realm after resetting.
  • Multiple “Farm Realms” Maintain several Realms specifically for farming XP or boss drops. Switch between Realms when resources or enemies are depleted in one area.

Tips

  • Rest Buffs and Inns Before turning in bounties or completing quests, rest at Caroline’s Inn or use resting buffs. This provides a bonus XP multiplier when the quest rewards are collected.
  • Focus on Mini-Boss Routes: Identify zones with reliable mini-boss spawns (Nameless Pass, Orban Glades). Use hit-and-run tactics to reduce risk; mini-bosses give the highest XP-per-time ratio outside main story bosses.
  • Combine with Resource Farming: While clearing zones for XP, gather high-value materials (ore, herbs, meat). This doubles your efficiency, allowing you to improve Sacrament projects and upgrade gear at the same time.
  • Potion Management: Only use Large XP Potions on mini-bosses or elite encounters for maximum benefit. Small and Medium potions are better saved for farming runs in high-density enemy zones.
  • Use Co-Op: If playing in co-op, coordinate kills to maximize XP gains. Some XP is shared, so plan rotations to ensure each player gets an optimal share.

10. How to Allocate Stat Points

Attribute Points

Attribute Points

Attributes in No Rest For the Wicked determine how strong, fast, and durable your character is, as well as how many rune abilities you can use. You start with a base in all 8 stats and earn 3 points per level. Plan your points carefully, because early in the game, you cannot easily respec. Points are permanent until you unlock the Cerim Crucible later in the game.

  • Health: Increase Health first. Open your character menu after leveling up and assign points to Health to survive early enemies and environmental hazards. Your goal is to reach a comfortable HP buffer before investing in damage stats.
  • Stamina: Invest in Stamina early alongside Health. Higher Stamina lets you attack, dodge, and block more efficiently. Assign enough points to maintain a large enough stamina pool for sustained combat and exploration.
  • Strength: Only invest in Strength once you commit to Strength-scaling weapons like great swords, axes, or hammers. Open your attributes menu, check your weapon requirements, and assign points until your Strength meets or exceeds the weapon’s minimum requirement.
  • Dexterity: Invest in Dexterity if you are using Dexterity-based weapons such as daggers, spears, or bows. Prioritize this stat after Stamina and Health to increase attack speed and critical damage.
  • Intelligence: Allocate points to Intelligence if you are using Intelligence-scaling staves or magic-focused weapons. Each point improves spell damage and elemental rune effectiveness.
  • Faith: Assign points to Faith only if you are using Faith-based weapons or healing/support runes. This increases weapon damage, healing output, and buffs from Faith abilities.
  • Focus: Increase Focus to gain more bars for rune abilities. Every 100 Focus adds a bar. Prioritize this if your build relies on frequent casting of runes like Heal Aura, Repair, or Pulse of Health.
  • Equip Load: Raise Equip Load to carry heavier weapons or armor without slowing your dodge speed. Check your current load after equipping gear and assign points to stay below encumbrance thresholds.

10.1 How To Respec Attribute Points

Respec Statue

Respec Statue

Respeccing allows you to reassign your attribute points if you want to change your build, swap weapons, or adjust your stats for rune-heavy or hybrid setups. This system becomes available late-game, so plan your early stats carefully.

10.1.1 Step-by-Step Process to Respec

  1. Unlock the Cerim Crucible by progressing through the main story until you gain access to the endgame dungeon.
  2. Enter the Crucible Atrium and locate the respec statue.
  3. Interact with the statue to begin refunding attribute points.
  4. Spend Fallen Embers to take back the points you want to reassign (1 Ember per 10 points, for example, Refund 10 points = 1 Fallen Ember, 20 points = 2 Fallen Ember and so on).
  5. Open your character/attributes menu and redistribute points across Health, Stamina, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Focus, and Equip Load.
  6. Press Confirm to finalize the new allocation.

NOTE: If you refund 11 attribute points, it will count as 2 Fallen Embers, as it goes above the limit of 10 points per ember.

Tips

  • Only respec if you are changing your main weapon type or build.
  • Keep track of Fallen Embers, as they are rare and useful for multiple respecs or other endgame upgrades.
  • Consider waiting until you unlock more runes or legendary weapons to optimize your new build.

11. Choose the Best Legendary Weapons

Bleeder's Delight

Bleeder’s Delight

Select the best weapon that suits your playstyle and complements the build in No Rest For Wicked. Legendary weapons have unique buffs, stronger runes, and niche effects that make them top‑tier. Invest stats like Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith based on weapon requirements for max damage.

  • Bleeder’s Delight: Legendary Dual Daggers with stagger boost and attack speed on kill. Assign points to Dexterity and Focus. Use stagger attacks and kill to gain attack speed. Slot runes for fast melee combos.
  • Cinder & Stone: Legendary Great Hammer with heat damage and poise resistance. Assign points to Strength. Use heavy attacks and poise to tank hits. Slot runes to boost damage and survivability.
  • Corpse Smeared Blade: Legendary Great Sword with plague damage + HP regen. Assign points to Strength and Faith. Hit enemies to deal plague damage and heal on kill. Slot runes for sustain.
  • Falling Sky: Legendary Staff boosting focus‑based rune attacks. Assign points to Intelligence or Faith. Use runes for Focus-based attacks. Prioritize upgrading Focus and spell effectiveness.

12. Purchase Healing Items

Buying healing items before exploration or combat ensures survivability and reduces downtime.

  • Find Gordon the Cook – Go to the south entrance of Sacrament.
  • Complete Side Quest – Rescue Gordon during “The Innkeeper’s Husband” quest.
  • Unlock Vendor – Talk to Gordon after the quest to unlock permanent healing supplies.
  • Buy Herbs and Food – Purchase Artemisia, cooked food, and other healing items.
  • Stock Up Before Fights – Always buy and cook a stack of food before tough dungeons, mini-bosses, or boss encounters.
